A big, century-old Hirayu inn by the bus terminal with free-flowing sulphur baths, an iron-pot open-air tub and generous Hida beef dinners — cheap in the main building, private open-air baths in the ten-room Warakutei annex, but the water can run too hot and upkeep is patchy
Okada Ryokan opened in 1921 in Hirayu, the oldest spa village in Okuhida, and today it's two inns on one site: a 60-room main building of plain tatami rooms, and Warakutei, a ten-room annex built from a 150-year-old farmhouse moved from Gujō Hachiman, where every room has its own free-flowing indoor and open-air bath. The water is the inn's own sulphur-tinged sodium chloride and bicarbonate spring, 1,200 litres a minute from four wells at 96°C, poured straight into the baths. The shared bathhouse is the draw: a high-ceilinged koyamaki-wood hall reached by tatami stairs (or a lift) from a changing room upstairs, a rock garden pool and a ~37°C iron-pot tub facing Mt Akandana. Japanese guests rate it 4.4 across 1,242 reviews on one major site (baths 4.5) and 3.97 across 634 on another (dinner 4.08, facilities 3.77). Bloggers from 2022 to 2026 found it old but clean, the dinners too big to finish and the baths almost empty midweek; a 2026 bus-tour guest who expected little was won over. Reviewers praise the Hida beef, kind dining staff, care for babies and the free parking for Kamikōchi trips. The complaints in 2026: baths too hot to enter (in June a broken cooling pipe left everything scalding), slime and moss in an outdoor tub, insects and rotting wood around Warakutei's room baths in spring and summer, a cool front desk, a sewer smell from one toilet fan, tough beef and slow, lukewarm service. Two-meal stays run about ¥12,000–17,000 per person in the main building and ¥19,000–30,000 in Warakutei.

Warakutei annex rooms (Mutsuki, Kisaragi, Yayoi and others), each with a free-flowing indoor and open-air bath
Two-room tatami suites in a relocated old farmhouse, reached along a floor-heated corridor (shoes and slippers go in a locker at the entrance). A New Year blogger found two toilets, a double sink and a hot spring running constantly into both baths for ¥25,000 on the over-50 plan; October 2026 reviewers loved the sunken kotatsu and found the room baths the right temperature. Satsuki is barrier-free with a bed; Minazuki and Fumizuki are two-level maisonettes. A February 2026 blogger warns the last stretch is stairs, so luggage carts can't reach some rooms.
Main-building tatami rooms (8, 10 or 12 mats) and the 8+10-mat special rooms
Plain Japanese rooms with a bath and toilet, mountain views and the lowest prices — a solo traveller in July 2026 paid about ¥15,000 with two meals. A 2026 bus-tour blogger got a two-room special room (one per floor, with a separate bath and toilet) and found the building old but clean. Room baths here are not described as onsen; use the big baths.

Warakutei open-air baths in the warm months, and anyone sensitive to heat or wear
In April 2026 one reviewer found rotting wood and ants around the room's outdoor tub; in August and September 2026 others found it full of insects and gave up on it, and a July 2026 guest found slime and moss. The free-flowing water can't always be cooled outdoors. Main-building reviewers mention worn screens, a single power socket, a fridge you must switch on yourself and weak, cool showers; a June 2026 guest reported a sewer smell from the toilet fan.

Consenso sobre el desayuno
3.8/5A Hida set breakfast with hoba-miso grilled on a magnolia leaf, tsukemono steak (pickles cooked with egg), small sides and self-service rice and miso soup — hearty, though several 2026 reviewers found it salty and the same as other Hirayu inns
Leaving early for Kamikōchi? Skip breakfast and ask — in August 2026 the inn packed rice balls instead. Guests can leave the car in the free 80-space car park before check-in and after check-out and take the bus from the terminal. The front desk is unstaffed 20:00–7:00 (last check-in 20:00). Bring drinking water: the in-room fridge is empty.
Claves de la cena
4.0/5Kaiseki in private dining rooms (main building) or around the irori hearth in Warakutei, with Hida beef as sukiyaki, a hoba-leaf ceramic grill or a 'teppan-steamed' brisket; the 'gattsuri' plan adds a 120g steak, and the Warakutei plan compares three Hida beef cuts. Bloggers and 2026 reviewers describe more food than they could finish, children served the adult course, and kind, attentive servers. Critics in 2026 found the beef tough, grilled fish cold and soup lukewarm, dishes slow to arrive, and a solo guest was only offered 17:00 or 17:30. Rice, miso soup and tea are self-service.
Onsen y bienestar: la realidad
Sulphur-bearing sodium chloride–bicarbonate spring (含硫黄–ナトリウム–塩化物・炭酸水素塩泉) from the inn's own four wells, 1,200 litres a minute at 96°C. The inn describes every bath, including Warakutei's room baths, as free-flowing straight from the source (源泉かけ流し); the water is cooled rather than heated, and white yu-no-hana flakes float in it.
The main bathhouse has a high-ceilinged koyamaki-and-granite indoor bath, a utase-yu, a rock garden pool and a low-temperature iron-pot tub (~37°C) made from Kamioka mine iron; the men's side faces Mt Akandana. Changing rooms are upstairs and the baths below, linked by tatami stairs and a lift. Hours are listed as 15:00 to about 8:30–9:00 (some earlier visitors were told 24 hours — check). Two private baths — Fudō, carved from a boulder, and Yakushi, an upturned iron pot — each with a one-person sauna, cost ¥2,800 for 50 minutes (15:00–20:00, booked on the day). Guests praise near-empty baths midweek but in 2026 often found the main indoor bath too hot; one complained of a smelly mat on the women's side and the outdoor bath is dimly lit at night.
No policy found on the official site or Japanese booking sites — contact the inn. Warakutei rooms have their own baths.

Check-in 15:00 (last 20:00), check-out 10:00. The last dinner seating is 18:00. A bathing tax of ¥150 per person applies, and Takayama has charged an accommodation tax since October 2025.
- 02
Cancellation (main booking site): 10% from 7 days before, 20% from 4 days, 50% from 2 days, 100% on the day or no-show.
- 03
It's a large inn (70 rooms) that also takes tour groups; one 2026 reviewer found it crowded and unsettled, while midweek bloggers had the baths to themselves.
- 04
Children are welcome: under-3s sharing bedding stay free, 3–5-year-olds pay infant rates, and from junior high pay adult rates. A 2026 family with a toddler was given a nappy bin, child-size pillow and yukata, and children's tableware.
- 05
Hirayu sits at 1,250m: winter tyres or chains are required in winter, and mountain insects reach the open-air room baths in summer.
