Fukuchi Onsen, Okuhida Onsen-gō, Takayama, Gifu — on a quiet lane off the main road at about 1,000 m, a 3-minute walk from the Fukuchi Yurimizaka bus stop (about 75–80 minutes by bus from JR Takayama Station)

Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

An 1836 Hida farmhouse rebuilt in a quiet mountain hamlet, with charcoal-hearth dinners, wood-fired rice and free-flowing water from three springs — including free private baths open all night — but no room has its own bath, there are lots of stairs, and the hearth runs hot in summer

Sōen sits in Fukuchi Onsen, a hamlet of about ten inns some 1,000 m up in the Okuhida valley, and is built around the Futamura family farmhouse — raised in 1836 in Kiyomi, in the Hida hills, dismantled and rebuilt here in spring 2004, and now a registered tangible cultural property. You duck through a low wicket door into a lobby where the irori fires are actually lit; the 15 rooms are split between the old house, a Meiji-era farmhouse brought from Niigata and a newer wing built from the family's own timber. The real draw is the water: three free-flowing springs feed a semi-open-air main bath on the inn's own well, two riverside open-air tubs (one of rock, one an old iron cauldron from a nearby mine) and three private baths across the lane that are free, need no booking and stay open through the night, with 44°C and 35°C tubs side by side. Both meals are eaten around charcoal hearths — river fish and gohei-mochi already roasting as you sit down, Hida beef, rice cooked over wood in a kamado. Japanese guests rate it 4.4 across 970 reviews on one major site and 4.69 across 387 on another, and bloggers who stayed from 2022 to 2026 praise the quiet, the baths and the honour-system drinks chilled in spring water. The catches: no room has its own bath, there are many stairs and outdoor paths, the riverside baths close in heavy rain, the hearth is hot in summer, and in 2026 one guest found service muddled while another was unexpectedly billed for a welcome drink. Two-meal rates run about ¥24,000–31,000 per person.

Recomendadas

  • Mokuan (木庵) rooms in the Meiji-era Niigata farmhouse

Five rooms inside a sturdy farmhouse whose ridgepole was raised in September 1900, each with a sitting room, a tatami bedroom and a view over the Hirayu River (about 25㎡, from ¥27,280 per person with two meals on the inn's 2026 plan). Bloggers who stayed in 2022 and 2026 loved the beams and the river outlook — 'enough to make you want to stay another night', one wrote — and a July 2026 guest heard nothing but the river. The dining room is directly below, so the smell of kamado rice drifts up in the morning.

  • Enkōan (煙香庵), the two rooms in the 1836 main house

The inn's signature rooms, for two to six people, inside the cultural-property farmhouse itself. A repeat visitor who stayed in the room Ichii in 2021 found it 'far too comfortable' and got a Hida-beef nigiri course as a room perk; an October 2026 guest liked the loft. It's the most expensive type, from ¥30,580 per person with two meals.

  • Sōan (草庵) standard rooms — and anyone who needs a private bath or step-free access

The eight Sōan rooms are the cheapest (from ¥23,980 per person) and face the mountains; a family of four in August 2026 found one roomy, but a blogger in room 305 Hōzuki in September 2023 found the six-mat sitting room compact and the bedroom bare. No room in the inn has its own bath — only a toilet and washbasin. The inn says all rooms are deodorised and keeps designated smoking areas inside. Expect stairs throughout: a 2026 blogger advised taking suitcases up the road rather than the steps from the car park.

Consenso sobre el desayuno

4.2/5

A set Hida breakfast at 8:00 around the hearth — hoba miso and amago grilled over charcoal, yudōfu, pickle 'steak' with egg, kamado-cooked rice and mochi pounded that morning — widely liked, though a 2026 blogger found the hoba miso on the salty side

Arrive between 15:00 and 17:00: dinner starts only at 18:00 and isn't served if you arrive after 19:00. Welcome tea is served at the lobby hearth until 16:50 — ask what's included, as a May 2026 guest was billed for a drink ordered there. There are no vending machines; drinks are chilled in spring-water troughs and paid for on an honour slip. In June and July, join the free firefly walk (10 June–25 July, not on Saturdays, 20 places). Bus travellers can book a pick-up from the Fukuchi Onsen-guchi stop.

Claves de la cena

4.2/5

A seasonal kaiseki at screened-off irori seats in the ground-floor Mokuan dining room (table seats are available), served at 18:00 only. River fish and gohei-mochi are already roasting at the hearth; a July 2026 menu included egg yolk on a hōzuki leaf, kawafugu (local catfish) sashimi, a corn shinjo soup, Hida pork shabu-shabu and Hida beef seared on a lava plate over charcoal, ending with kamado rice and its crisp okoge. A 2021 repeat visitor felt a new chef had moved the food from country cooking toward refined ryōtei style. Gripes: the hearth is hot in summer (2023, 2026), the pre-set fish was lukewarm (August 2026), dishes came out of order (April 2026), and a 2022 blogger found the beef less generous than at a nearby inn — upgrades such as Hida-beef hoba steak (¥4,600 plus tax) are offered. Sake comes only by the glass or the 720 ml bottle.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

Three different springs, all free-flowing (gensen kakenagashi). Fuku-no-yu, the main bath, uses the inn's own well, pumped from 300 m — the inn calls it a sodium bicarbonate spring, while the 2017 analysis posted at the bath lists a simple spring at 63.5°C. The private baths use a second well of the inn's own, Mizuwake-no-yu (weakly alkaline simple spring, 41.3°C, pH 7.6). The riverside Mori-no-yu uses a hot simple spring from Fukuchi's shared supply, with water added to cool it.

Privacidad y ambiente

Mori-no-yu is two open-air tubs beside the Hirayu River — Kama-yu, an iron cauldron from the nearby Kamioka mine, and Iwa-yu, of rock — reached by a path through the woods and swapped between men and women at 20:00–20:30; there's no washing area, they're for overnight guests only and they close in heavy rain. Fuku-no-yu is semi-open-air, with a separate washing room and a foot-bath steam room. Three private baths in a separate building across the lane — two with indoor and outdoor tubs, one indoor only — are free, need no booking and can be used at any hour; the indoor tubs pair 44°C and 35°C water. Bloggers from 2022 to 2026 often had every bath to themselves, though one October 2025 guest found the private baths taken when wanted.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Check-in 15:00–17:00 only (no earlier), check-out 11:00. Dinner is at 18:00 only, and guests arriving after 19:00 may not be served dinner.

  2. 02

No room has its own bath. All bathing is in shared and private bathhouses, two of them reached by outdoor paths and across a lane that are dark at night and awkward in rain or snow.

  3. 03

An old-house layout with many stairs — an August 2026 family warned it would be hard for anyone unsteady on their feet.

  4. 04

At busy times (New Year, Golden Week, Obon, nights before holidays, long weekends) the dining room is shared and the inn doesn't accept children below primary-school age.

  5. 05

Snow tyres or chains are needed from November to mid-April, and the inn's winter notice (20 November 2026–15 April 2027) lists only two of its three private baths as open.
