A big riverside onsen inn with irori-hearth dinners, three bath houses on its own pH 9.3 spring and free drinks since December 2025 — good value, but ageing buildings, insects and a slimmer dinner draw 2026 complaints
Hana to Hana is one of the larger inns in Yunishigawa, the valley where Heike warriors are said to have hidden after their defeat: 56 rooms across three buildings — the seven-storey Spring wing with a lift, the three-storey Autumn wing by the river and the small two-storey wooden Winter wing — joined by corridors to a lobby dressed with armour and hanging hina ornaments. The draws are a 'Heike okariba-yaki' dinner around sunken irori hearths, ten baths fed by the inn's own alkaline spring (pH 9.3, about 60°C), and, since December 2025, an all-inclusive set-up with free drinks, soft-serve and snacks in an open lounge plus drinks at dinner. Most recent evidence comes from booking-site reviews rather than blogs: guests rate it 4.07 across 1,758 reviews on Rakuten Travel (baths 4.30, facilities 3.90) and 4.2 across 2,559 on Jalan, where baths score 4.5. A blogger who stayed in February 2024 loved the snow-view hinoki open-air bath and the deer tataki, and 2026 reviewers praise the riverside baths, the slippery-smooth water, the friendly, flexible staff and the free beer after bathing. The complaints are just as consistent: old buildings with a musty smell, weak or noisy air conditioners, insects (one October 2026 guest removed more than 30 stink bugs from a seventh-floor room), patchy Wi-Fi, and — from repeat guests in 2026 — a dinner with fewer dishes, a 'teppanyaki' upgrade served on a tabletop burner, and little explanation of how to grill. Rates run from about ¥16,500 to over ¥30,000 per person with two meals.

Renovated Japanese-Western rooms in the Spring wing (15 tatami, some corner rooms with an extra 4.5-tatami room)
Refurbished around 2025 with new washbasins and toilets; August and October 2026 guests found them clean and comfortable, and the river-side type comes with a guaranteed semi-private dinner room. The Spring wing has the lift and is the only building with in-room Wi-Fi, with rooms from the fourth to the seventh floor looking out over the valley — though an August 2026 guest on the fifth floor found the signal weak.
Autumn wing Japanese rooms (10 tatami plus a window-side sitting area)
Pure-Japanese rooms in a three-storey building beside the river: a solo guest in August 2026 found the room 'surprisingly large' with the river right outside, and a February 2024 blogger in room 134 had two connected rooms, a balcony and big windows onto the snow. The Autumn wing's hinoki bath is at its entrance.

Winter wing modern rooms (8 tatami) and older unrenovated rooms in any wing
The cheapest rooms are compact; a September 2026 guest found a Winter wing room smelled of mould, and an August 2026 guest in the Autumn wing reported gecko droppings on the window frame, a torn screen, weak air conditioning and no Wi-Fi. Other 2026 guests heard noisy air conditioners at night, and one in a seventh-floor corner room of the Spring wing battled stink bugs in October. A June 2026 guest who hoped for a gorge view saw it only through the trees.

La cocina a fondo
Consenso sobre el desayuno
3.9/5A set Japanese breakfast from 7:30 in a large hall, with rice, miso soup, drinks and hotpot ingredients self-served — the hearty miso soup and many rice toppings are praised, though a couple of 2026 guests found it cheap-feeling
Arrive between 15:00 and 18:00 to enjoy the lounge — free drinks run from check-in until 21:00 and again from 8:00, which one August 2026 guest found too late for an early bath. The last bus from Yunishigawa Onsen Station leaves at 17:15; the inn's single daily free shuttle must be booked by phone the day before. Bring towels from your room to the main baths.
Claves de la cena
3.9/5Dinner starts at 18:00 around irori hearths, in semi-private rooms or a larger hall: pre-cooked skewers of river fish and meat that you warm over the charcoal, with dishes such as deer tataki, a griddled pork-and-beef main and a well-made dessert (February 2024 blog). Upgrades add Tochigi wagyu or sukiyaki, and drinks, including local sake and draft beer, are included. Many 2026 guests loved the experience, but repeat guests felt the menu had shrunk, an August 2026 guest found the 'teppanyaki' plan was a ceramic plate over a fuel burner, and others wanted more food or clearer grilling instructions. Wear the yukata — sparks fly from the charcoal.
Onsen y bienestar: la realidad
The inn's own spring, Kasho-no-yu: a colourless alkaline simple spring (pH 9.3, about 60°C, 160 litres a minute) that leaves skin slippery-smooth. One booking site lists the baths as free-flowing natural onsen; an onsen writer who visited in late 2021 was told the rock bath is chlorinated for hygiene, though no chlorine smell was noticeable.
Three bath areas: the main bath with sauna, sleeping bath and riverside open-air bath (15:00–24:00, from 5:30); the hinoki bath with a rock-lined open-air pool down a few steps by the river (to 23:30, from 6:00); and the indoor rock bath, which alternates — women on arrival evening, men the next morning. Guests often find them uncrowded on weekdays. Two private baths cost extra (¥3,850 or ¥2,750 for 45 minutes, bookable at check-in); a few rooms have semi-open-air baths, but most do not.

Advertencias y matices locales
- 01
Check-in 15:00–18:00, check-out 10:00. Winter roads to the valley need snow tyres or chains; parking is free.
- 02
This is a large inn with karaoke rooms, a convention hall and group facilities — friendly and good value, but not an intimate small ryokan.
- 03
The all-inclusive service has limits: lounge drinks are time-bound, and one June 2026 guest felt it fell short of all-inclusive hotels elsewhere.
- 04
Children are welcome: primary-school children pay 70% and preschoolers 50%, with a children's onsen pool in summer.
- 05
Several 2025–2026 guests mention cold corridors and changing rooms in winter, and insects in a riverside mountain setting — pack accordingly.
