Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

An eight-room sukiya inn in the heart of Kyoto where dinner is the point — a Michelin-starred kaiseki kitchen you tour before eating, hinoki baths in every room, and two MICHELIN Keys since 2026 — but it isn't an onsen, the water runs very hot, and old floors carry sound

Kanamean Nishitomiya has stood on Tominokōji street since 1873, in a district once home to fan-rib makers — the 'kaname' in its name is a fan's pivot. Today it's an eight-room sukiya inn in a deep, narrow two-storey townhouse built around small courtyard gardens, the first Kyoto member of Relais & Châteaux (2015). Its kaiseki has held a Michelin star every year since 2010, and in the September 2026 selection the inn rose from one MICHELIN Key to two. Japanese reviews are few — a handful of stay blogs and individual reviews rather than hundreds of scores — but they agree on the food: guests are shown the kitchen and the day's ingredients before dinner, then eat in a private room, choosing classic kaiseki or the contemporary counter course 'Kaname', with a cellar of about 1,000 wines; one repeat guest 'strongly recommends' taking dinner and breakfast on a first stay, and the dashimaki at breakfast is called a must. Every room has a hinoki bath, but this is not an onsen, and guests keep finding the water too hot to get into. Ground-floor rooms have the gardens and an earthen-floored sitting area but hear footsteps from upstairs; upstairs rooms are quieter but stairs-only. Expect about ¥71,500–99,000 per person with two meals, plus a 10% service charge.

Recomendadas

  • Ground-floor rooms with a doma — Yokobue (横笛), Wakana (若菜) and Hatsune (初音)

Yokobue has a four-mat earthen-floored doma with a Nespresso machine — 'sitting in the doma listening to the rain was the best', a February 2022 guest wrote — and Hatsune a 4.5-mat sitting room with Karachō paper and a courtyard garden 'that feels very Kyoto' (2024). Wakana is the 1F executive suite for up to four. All rooms have a hinoki bath, most facing a tsubo-niwa.

  • Upstairs rooms — Kagaribi (篝火), Umegae (梅枝) and the Kashiwagi (柏木) suite with a library

Quieter than the ground floor: a 2024 guest advised anyone bothered by footsteps to take the second floor. Kagaribi has larger, brighter windows than most rooms and a small study (2019), and its bathroom was spotless in 2025. There's no lift — ask for the ground floor when booking if stairs are hard.

Mejor evitar

  • Ground-floor rooms, if you're a light sleeper

Two separate guests (2024 and September 2025) heard footsteps through the ceiling of this old building, and the 2025 guest found Yokobue's bath only partly screened by bamboo. A September 2026 solo guest found Yokobue 'very compact'.

Kyoto obanzai or a continental breakfast in a private room — 'dashimaki, rice, miso soup… a perfect breakfast', one 2023 guest wrote; a 2026 guest wanted one or two more small dishes

Book dinner and breakfast on a first stay — even a guest who ate out on later visits urges it. Ask staff to cool your bath before you return: the hinoki tubs are filled very hot in advance. There's no pick-up and only contracted paid parking.

Claves de la cena

4.8/5

Served in a private room at a table, from 17:30. Choose the classic kaiseki (soup, sashimi, hassun, grilled fish, simmered dish, seasonal rice) or 'Kaname', a contemporary counter course of 9–12 dishes cooked on teppan and charcoal. Guests from 2022 to 2026 describe a pre-dinner kitchen tour, urchin served on its board with caviar, Awaji fugu, handmade soba in abalone-liver broth, Venetian glass dishes, and the owner serving ramen to finish the hotpot; requests such as swapping meat for abalone were met. Wine pairings drew praise in 2026. A 2019 blogger found the windowless dining room dark.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

Not a hot spring. None of the sources say what water fills the baths.

Privacidad y ambiente

Every room has a large hinoki tub with a shower, most looking onto a small courtyard garden; the inn asks guests not to put anything in the tubs because the wood discolours. Tubs are filled before you arrive and run very hot — a September 2026 guest couldn't get in despite a warning and gave the bath 3 out of 5. One booking site lists small men's and women's shared baths (7:00–24:00), and a 2019 blogger saw an ordinary bath under the stairs, but the official site doesn't mention one.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Check-in 14:00, check-out 11:00. Rates include breakfast and dinner; a 10% service charge and Kyoto accommodation tax are extra, and special dates add ¥5,500–11,000 per person. Since 1 March 2026 Kyoto's accommodation tax at this price level is ¥4,000 per person per night (room-only portion ¥50,000–99,999) or ¥10,000 (¥100,000 and up).

  2. 02

No lift: upstairs rooms are reached by stairs only.

  3. 03

Japanese review volume is small — booking sites show only a few scored reviews — so this summary leans on stay blogs and individual dated reviews.

  4. 04

A 2026 guest found the front desk unexpectedly casual at first.

  5. 05

Children are accepted at 30–70% of the adult rate by age; junior-high age and up pay the adult rate.
