Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

A tatami-floored Kusatsu inn where all 64 rooms have an open-air onsen bath, plus 23 tubs shared with a sister inn — but the room baths are filled on demand rather than free-flowing, it's a 15–20-minute walk from the Yubatake, and 2025–2026 guests report an ageing building

Yuyado Toki no Niwa is a purpose-built inn from Kyoritsu Resort, the resort arm of the Dormy Inn group in a quiet villa district above Kusatsu — a 15–20-minute walk from the Yubatake, uphill on the way back, with free shuttles. All 64 rooms have their own open-air bath, and the corridors are laid with tatami, so you walk barefoot. The bath complex is shared with the 47-room sister inn Okyado Konoha on the same site: two bath halls fed by two acidic springs — Watanoyu (pH 2.1) in the big Tokinoyu hall with its open-air bath, bedrock bath and sauna, and Yukawanoyu (pH 2.3) in the smaller Konoyu — plus three free private open-air baths, 23 tubs in all. Japanese guests rate it 4.5 on Jalan across 3,472 reviews and 4.42 on Rakuten across 1,815, with baths scoring highest (4.6 and 4.65); Ikyu's 90 reviewers are cooler at 3.92, though they too give the baths 4.53. Bloggers who stayed in 2022–2024 and many 2026 reviewers praise the bath crawl, the private dining rooms, free night ramen and ice lollies, and attentive staff. Know before you book: the inn's FAQ says the room baths are not free-flowing — you fill them with a switch each time — and a 2022 blogger saw them labelled as diluted and heated. In 2025–2026, Jalan and Ikyu reviewers reported worn tatami, stains, mould on a room-bath ceiling, musty smells, thin walls, busy private baths, and dinners they found cold, rushed or forgettable. Two-meal rates for two start around ¥66,000–71,000 in the standard rooms and reach about ¥136,000 for the deluxe suite.

Recomendadas

  • Upper-floor Suite (54㎡, 3 rooms) or the Deluxe Suite (67㎡, 1 room)

Western beds and space for five or six people; a regular who took a top-floor suite in August 2025 found it very roomy and comfortable. Even here, an August 2026 guest found the room badly aged, the TV without satellite channels and the sound of neighbours draining their room baths disruptive at night — though the new mattresses slept well. Two-meal rates for two start around ¥108,700 (suite) and ¥135,600 (deluxe suite) on Ikyu.

  • Japanese-Western Room A (36㎡, 30 rooms) or Room B (40–46㎡, 19 rooms)

The core room types: a tatami sitting room plus a separate bedroom with two 100cm Japanese-style beds, a shower booth and the open-air bath on the balcony; B sleeps up to four. A 2022 blogger found Room A compact but easy to use, with a coffee mill and beans, and a guest who stayed three nights in August 2026 heard nothing from the neighbours and enjoyed the birdsong. From about ¥68,500 (A) and ¥70,700 (B) for two with two meals.

Mejor evitar

  • Double rooms (24㎡), and second-floor rooms facing the front entrance

The 11 doubles are the smallest rooms — one 180cm bed and a sofa corner; a solo September 2026 guest found theirs compact, humid and smelly, and a December 2025 couple found a broken fridge-cabinet door. A September 2026 couple in a second-floor room facing the main entrance felt watched in their room bath and on the balcony. Elsewhere, 2025–2026 reviewers mention neighbours' voices and key noise, worn tatami and mould on a room-bath ceiling — ask for an upper floor away from the entrance.

Consenso sobre el desayuno

4.1/5

A Japanese set breakfast in the Yūzan dining room (7:30–9:30): many small dishes, grilled dried fish and Gunma's 'koshine-jiru' miso soup of konnyaku, shiitake and leeks (2023), with rice or rice porridge — well liked, though a September 2026 regular noted that the old choice of Japanese or Western is gone

Check in early: the two dinner sittings (17:30 or 20:00) are allotted first come, first served at check-in, and later arrivals have been given 19:50 or 20:10; the pick-your-own pillows also run out. Use the private baths early in the morning — they're busiest after dinner. Free extras include an 'oshinogi' snack before dinner, ice lollies after the bath, Yakult in the morning and shoyu night ramen at the Kyokugetsu lounge from 22:00 to 23:00 (go early, it fills fast). The free Karuizawa Station shuttle must be booked by phone three days ahead.

Claves de la cena

3.9/5

A monthly kaiseki served in private or semi-private rooms (no in-room dining), with a choice of main dish and of rice or soba: in 2022 the mains were Gunma wagyu and Yamato pork teppanyaki, seafood teppanyaki, Kuroge wagyu sukiyaki or a seafood hotpot; an autumn 2024 menu had sashimi on ice, Jōshū beef cooked on a ceramic plate, seared bonito and soba. Many 2026 reviewers loved it and found the portions generous. Critics found dishes cold and served too fast (December 2025), 'neither good nor bad' (May 2026) and the teppanyaki slow to cook (September 2026), and missed salt and soy sauce on the table. The inn does not swap foods you dislike or cater for vegetarian or religious diets; a low-allergen menu must be ordered two days ahead.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

Two of Kusatsu's springs, both acidic, sulphur-containing aluminium sulphate-chloride water: Watanoyu (51.5°C, pH 2.1) feeds the Tokinoyu bath hall, and Yukawanoyu (32.8°C, pH 2.3) feeds Konoyu, the three private baths and the room baths. Jalan's listing describes the baths as free-flowing with water added and heating; the official site notes that some tubs are not onsen. The room baths are not free-flowing: according to the inn's FAQ you fill them with a switch each time (about 10 minutes per press, a 2022 blogger found, labelled as diluted and heated). Watanoyu was cut off by the supplier's equipment failure in September 2026 and restored on 25 September.

Privacidad y ambiente

Every room has an open-air onsen bath on its balcony, usable at any time — though in 2026 some guests found it slow to fill with no way to add hot water, others found it too hot without adding cold, and a few rooms are overlooked. The shared baths serve both this inn and its 47-room sister Okyado Konoha: Tokinoyu has a large open-air bath, varied indoor tubs, a free bedrock bath and a dry sauna (15:00–24:00); Konoyu has hot and lukewarm tubs, a barrel bath and a micro-bubble bath. Both are open 24 hours apart from cleaning, and swap between men and women overnight. The three free private baths — Iwamuro (giant rocks), Takeza (bamboo) and Kōrin (hexagonal hinoki) — take no bookings, run about 30 minutes, hold two people and have no washing area; guests have queued for them (January 2026), found them always occupied or lukewarm (September 2026), and fallen leaves piled up in the shared open-air bath in May 2026.

Política sobre tatuajes

Guests with tattoos are refused in the large baths (official FAQ); the inn suggests the three free private baths or the in-room bath instead.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Check-in 15:00 (last arrival 24:00), check-out 11:00. All meals are served in the Yūzan dining room — no in-room dining — and dinner is in two sittings, 17:30 or 20:00, allotted at check-in.

  2. 02

It's a 15–20-minute walk from the Yubatake, uphill on the way back. Free shuttles run to the Kusatsu Onsen bus terminal, and since 1 October 2026 the evening Yubatake shuttle also uses the bus terminal, about five minutes' walk from the Yubatake. There's no pick-up from Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi Station; a free Karuizawa Station shuttle runs by reservation. Winter tyres or chains are needed from about December to April.

  3. 03

Cancellation: 10% from 7 days before, 20% from 4 days, 50% from 2 days, 80% on the day and 100% for no-shows (some plans differ).

  4. 04

The building is showing its age: in 2025–2026 Jalan and Ikyu reviewers reported worn tatami, stained walls, mould on a room-bath ceiling, musty smells and thin walls, and the inn replied that the soundproofing can't be fixed quickly for structural reasons.

  5. 05

The whole inn is tatami-floored, with no slippers. Children under 3 stay free and 3–5-year-olds pay a ¥2,200 facility fee; children's meals need three days' notice. There are no barrier-free rooms, but there are few steps, a lift and wheelchairs to borrow.
