Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

A hamlet of thatched farmhouses where chickens roam and every room has a rock-hewn onsen — 'as if time stopped fifty years ago', and priced accordingly high

Gajoen was founded in 1970 by a former banker born in a Myoken Onsen bath-house inn, who moved old rural buildings to this riverside site and created what the inn calls Japan's first guest room with its own open-air bath. Today it's a cluster of about eight rooms — thatched houses with 'bath-living rooms', a two-storey cottage, and riverside suites — and since a 2023 renovation every room has its own onsen tub carved from rock. It holds two MICHELIN Keys (2025 and 2026), up from one in 2024. Japanese guests rate it 4.64 across 34 reviews on one leading site, with service at 4.76: they love the unhurried, 'neither clingy nor distant' hospitality, shochu by the irori after dinner, free-roaming chickens that greet you, and rice balls pressed into your hands as you leave. Food comes from the inn's own poultry farm and gardens — chicken sashimi 'with no gamey smell at all', a chicken hotpot simmered for hours, charcoal grilling — rustic rather than Kyoto-style. Critics point to value: at over ¥100,000 for two, some found the rooms dated, amenities basic, Wi-Fi weak, portions heavy, insects a summer problem, and the steep stairs and handrail-free stone baths hard on older guests. One 2024 guest called the price 'out of line with the stay'.

Guía para elegir habitación

Recomendadas

  • Kaze (かぜ) — the original open-air-bath room

Billed as Japan's first guest room with its own open-air bath: 6 + 4.5 tatami, a kotatsu living room and a wooden terrace with day bed and rock tub. A guest who spent two nights here at Hinamatsuri wrote that it felt as if time had stopped fifty years ago. From about ¥110,300 for two with two meals.

  • Hikari (光) and Sora (空) — riverside suites

Suites facing the river with a semi-open onsen bath, renovated around 2023. A repeat guest chose Hikari because it's flat — 'reassuring even for my elderly mother'. Sora has an extra outdoor bath; from about ¥220,300 for two.

Mejor evitar

  • Type B thatched rooms (Keyaki, Sakura, Momiji, Beni), for guests with bad knees

Charming 'bath-living' rooms (from about ¥105,900 for two), but a December 2024 guest with weak knees struggled with a high entrance step and steep attic stairs, wasn't warned in advance, and felt the price didn't match the stay. One blogger moved rooms after a night because the first was dark with no chairs.

Grilled fish and eggs cooked to order, served in the Icho-no-ma farmhouse — with rice balls and tamagoyaki to take with you when you leave

After dinner, go to the irori hut for warm kappo-zake (sake heated in bamboo) — and try the carbonated Ramune-yu by the river, free for private use until midnight.

Claves de la cena

4.3/5

Served at tables in Icho-no-ma, the first thatched house moved to the site: chicken sashimi from the inn's own farm, a chicken hotpot simmered six-plus hours, Kagoshima black pork, local black beef, charcoal grilling, dago-jiru dumpling soup and country soba. Reviewers praise its local character; critics find it heavy on meat and portions too big for older guests, and in 2025 one found a third of the breakfast didn't match the printed menu and another that a late-night drink couldn't be made because staff were short.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

A bicarbonate spring, about 44°C; every in-room bath is 100% spring water in a rock basin, the inn says, with water added only in summer to adjust temperature (a regular guest reports). The Japan Spa Association lists it as clear; one blogger saw reddish-brown water.

Privacidad y ambiente

Every room has its own rock-carved onsen tub. The shared baths are used privately when free: Takeru-yu, carved over six months from a single 20-tonne rock, and Ramune-yu, a naturally carbonated spring by the river (about 36°C, with a hotter tub next to it). There are no washing stations at these baths, no handrails in the stone tubs, and the riverside bath may be visible from across the river at night. Day visitors use Takeru-yu 12:00–15:00.

Política sobre tatuajes

No policy found on the official or booking sites. With an onsen in every room and private use of the shared baths, you never need to share — ask the inn if unsure.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Getting there: about 15 minutes by car or 25 by bus (stop 'Gajoen-mae') from Kagoshima Airport; the inn can arrange a paid taxi (a 2020 guest paid ¥2,200 each way). The access road is narrow.

  2. 02

Check-in 14:00, check-out 12:00 — a generous stay. Bookings open six months ahead; 50% cancellation fee from seven days out.

  3. 03

Children are welcome, with child rates.

  4. 04

Summer brings insects when doors are open, and older guests should ask about stairs before booking.

  5. 05

It was once a Relais & Châteaux member, but it no longer appears in the association's current Kyushu listings. The MICHELIN Guide lists it as 'GAJOEN': one Key in 2024, two Keys in 2025 and again in 2026.
