A 14-room gorge inn three minutes from its own sightseeing-boat pier, renovated in 2024 with gadget-packed rooms, a pour-your-own sauna and local-produce kaiseki at a fair price — but the spring is cold and recirculated, the open-air bath is an artificial mineral bath, and road and train noise reach it
Obokekyo Mannaka is the inn of the company that runs the Oboke Gorge sightseeing boats. It sits beside a red road bridge on Route 32, three minutes' walk from the pier and 1.5 km from JR Oboke Station, where staff collect guests for free. It's on the Yoshino River gorge, not in the Iya Valley itself, which is about 30 minutes' drive away. From outside the building looks dated — '1980s', one 2025 reviewer wrote — but all 14 rooms were renovated in March 2024, and by 2024 the lobby with its tatami hearth corner, the dining hall and the baths had been redone too; a self-service löyly sauna followed in late 2024 and massage-chair lounges in 2025. Japanese guests rate it 4.60 across 1,935 reviews on one major site and a rounded 5.0 across 515 on another (service 4.8, cleanliness 4.9, rooms, bath and both meals 4.7), and it won a Rakuten Travel Gold Award for 2025. Most recent evidence comes from booking-site reviews, backed by two 4travel bloggers who stayed in November 2024 and March 2025. They praise the gap between the tired exterior and the polished interior, Dyson dryers, ReFa shower heads and long lending lists, dinners of ayu, soba-subeshi and white-miso country hotpot, station pick-ups and a send-off waved until the car is out of sight. The catches: the indoor baths use a cold (18°C) simple sulphur spring that the inn heats and recirculates, while the open-air and private baths are artificial mineral baths; road traffic and trains are audible from the outdoor tub (2024–2025); most rooms have only a shower; river-side rooms are loud after rain; and dinner pacing drew complaints in 2023–2024. Two-meal stays ran about ¥15,000–26,000 per person in 2024–2026.

Japanese-Western rooms (和洋室, 30㎡), ideally on the mountain side if you sleep lightly
The only standard type with its own bath: two semi-double beds plus a tatami sitting area, gorge views and the long amenity list, and the type most 2025–2026 reviewers booked, at about ¥19,000–26,000 per person with two meals. A December 2025 trio of older travellers found it 'a little narrow but stylish', and three sharing felt tight to a February 2025 group. A May 2025 guest on the river side was bothered by the swollen river after rain, and a July 2026 reviewer recommends the mountain side for anyone sensitive to river noise.
Semi-suite (60㎡, two rooms only)
The official room page lists a tatami living space, two 110 cm-wide beds, an in-room sauna looking over the gorge, an 85-inch TV and space for up to six (extra guests sleep on futons). It has a shower but no bathtub, and no recent reviewer described staying in one.

Japanese rooms (10-tatami and 6-tatami solo rooms), Deluxe Twin and Hollywood Twins
The 10-tatami rooms and both twin types have only a shower. Views from the 10-tatami rooms can't be chosen, and the indigo-toned Hollywood Twins have no gorge-side rooms. A March 2025 blogger called a twin 'business-type… cramped, but enough'; a September 2025 solo guest's 6-tatami room faced the lift hall, with a step up into the bathroom and separate hot and cold taps; a March 2024 guest in a Japanese room rated it 2/5. On the plus side, a June 2026 couple in the cheapest Japanese room (about ¥18,000–19,000 per person) found it plain but spotless, with thick futons.

La cocina a fondo
Consenso sobre el desayuno
4.5/5A Japanese breakfast in the dining hall built around a jūbako box: the inn's own overnight-dried ayu, a plain 'wake-up' chawanmushi seasoned only with white tamari and organic mirin, steamed vegetables and Naruto wakame miso soup — consistently praised as light and vegetable-rich, though the single coffee machine at the free morning drinks bar meant a queue in May 2025
Arriving by train, phone ahead for the free pick-up from JR Oboke Station (the official site gives 20:00 as the last run); staff have also dropped guests at the boat pier. Ask for the sightseeing-boat discount ticket at check-in — it works before you check in, but boats are cancelled after heavy rain. There's nowhere to eat nearby in the evening, so book a plan with dinner.
Claves de la cena
4.3/5An original kaiseki of mountain and river produce in the dining hall or banquet room — no in-room dining and no private rooms — from 17:30 to 20:00, with the last start at 19:00. A summer 2026 menu ran from ayu sushi and sudachi tofu to soba-subeshi (the local buckwheat-thickened soup), salt-grilled ayu, roast beef and a white-miso country hotpot of pork, ending with yuzu parfait and house chocolate; a wagyu-teppanyaki plan and a ¥4,000 100 g Tokushima kuroge wagyu add-on (order by 9:00 the day before) step it up. Reviewers single out the hotpot, the rice and how little oil is used, and the warm sake is all junmai. Critics: no sashimi (December 2023), dishes rushed out and going cold or served out of order before the 20:00 close (2023–2024), and a June 2026 reviewer rated dinner 3/5 ('it's the mountains, so…').
Onsen y bienestar: la realidad
The indoor baths use Ōboke Onsen, a simple sulphur spring classed as a weakly alkaline cold mineral spring (18°C at source); the inn states the water is heated and recirculated through filters. The open-air bath and the private bath use an artificial mineral bath (Togor Warmtite stone), not spring water.
Separate men's and women's indoor baths, each with a glass-walled sauna of about 90°C where you pour your own löyly, lead down a staircase to the Seseragi open-air bath above the emerald Yoshino River and a red bridge, with a cold plunge (17–22°C) outside. Many reviewers had it to themselves and enjoy spotting Dosan Line trains across the gorge, but it sits below a road bridge, so traffic and trains are audible (2024–2025), a June 2024 reviewer mentioned a slight chlorine-bleach smell, and a 2025 guest wished the gorge were lit at night. Guests can bathe 15:00–23:00 and 6:00–9:30; day visitors use the baths 12:00–16:00 (¥700). The windowless, charcoal-walled private bath costs ¥1,800 for 40 minutes, by reservation, 15:00–21:40.
Refused: the official site says guests with tattoos of any size, including tattoo stickers, may not use the baths. It doesn't say whether the paid private bath is an exception — ask the inn.
Advertencias y matices locales
- 01
Check-in 15:00–18:00, check-out 10:00, with no late check-out. Dinner must start by 19:00 and breakfast by 8:30.
- 02
There are no room attendants — the inn says this lets guests relax undisturbed — so service is hotel-style: meals are in a shared dining hall, there is one lift, and a November 2025 couple wished for a key per guest.
- 03
The building is old and the renovation is inside only; rooms have central air conditioning that, according to a May 2025 guest, can't be switched between heating and cooling in spring and autumn.
- 04
Children are very welcome, with a long list of baby equipment and children's menus; from primary-school age, children use the bath for their own sex.
- 05
Driving: 21 free spaces at the door, then the company's restaurant car park three minutes away, plus four EV chargers. The mountain roads in are winding — a July 2026 guest found them frightening.
