Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

Irori-grilled mountain dinners across a swaying vine bridge, riverside baths and 360 years of Heike-refugee lore — loved for the food, with thin walls and lots of steps

Honke Bankyu traces itself to 1666 and to a family descended from Heike warriors who hid in this valley after their defeat — the name Ban (伴) is said to be a disguised form of Taira (平). Today it is a riverside inn of about two dozen rooms, and dinner is the event: after gathering at the front desk, guests cross a swaying vine bridge (kazura-bashi) to private irori rooms for venison skewers, salt-grilled iwana, carp and trout sashimi and local beef. Japanese guests rate the food highest — 4.8 for dinner and breakfast across 943 reviews on one major booking site, where the inn averages 4.5 — and several call the riverside open-air bath the best they've been in. Three rooms have their own riverside open-air bath fed from the spring and five have semi-open-air baths. The criticisms are consistent, and the inn itself acknowledges some: you can hear corridors and neighbours, there is no lift and plenty of steps, and on one site facilities and cleanliness score below 3.9. Guests also disagree about how 'pure' the spring water is, and some found the baths scalding. Rates start around ¥25,500 per person with two meals.

Guía para elegir habitación

Recomendadas

  • Riverside open-air bath rooms (Aioi, Hanase, Yuki)

Two-room suites with an open-air bath fed round the clock from the spring, down beside the river — from about ¥45,000 per person with two meals. A winter guest in Yuki (東館 208) reached theirs down a flight of steps to the river. You choose the room type, not the specific room.

  • Semi-open-air bath rooms (e.g. Chikamitsu, Sadamasa)

From about ¥41,000 per person. Chikamitsu and Sadamasa are 80㎡ Japanese-Western suites extensively renovated in 2025, with Simmons beds; a 2026 repeat guest called the semi-open-air bath 'the best'.

Mejor evitar

  • Any room, if you're a light sleeper

The inn itself warns that you may hear corridors and neighbouring rooms, and replied to one reviewer that noise complaints have come up 'repeatedly'. Guests in 2025–2026 heard voices through the walls and footsteps from upstairs.

  • Open-air bath rooms, for elderly guests

The private riverside baths are reached by narrow stairs — one guest judged them risky for their elderly parents. There is no lift, and stairs lead to the dining area and main baths; one June 2025 reviewer called it 'full of steps and dangerous'.

La cocina a fondo

Consenso sobre el desayuno

4.4/5

A Japanese breakfast served to everyone at once at 7:30, rated 4.8 on one major site

Book a private open-air bath (¥2,200 for 45 minutes, 15:00–23:00) as soon as you check in. In winter, the inn drives guests to the Kamakura snow-hut festival after dinner, and the Hyobaku ice waterfall can be seen from the lobby and the bridge.

Claves de la cena

4.6/5

Dinner starts at 18:00 for everyone, in private irori rooms in the 'Heike hideaway' building reached by the vine bridge (one guest found it 'terrifyingly' wobbly). Bloggers describe venison-and-leek skewers, salt-grilled iwana and ayu, carp and trout sashimi, a local pork hot pot and Kirifuri highland beef. Reviewers love it; the gripes are about process — staff choosing everyone's welcome drink at check-in, everyone gathering at the front desk before walking over together, and fast-talking service.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

A weakly alkaline simple spring. Booking sites describe it as 100% natural hot-spring water, but one 2025 blogger's photo caption says the open-air baths are free-flowing while the indoor baths are recirculated, and a 2026 reviewer said it is not 100% free-flowing. One blogger noted the indoor tub in their room was not onsen water at all, while the room's open-air bath was.

Privacidad y ambiente

Separate baths that don't swap: for men, the open-air Fujikura-no-yu and the indoor Kindachi-no-yu; for women, the open-air Bihada-no-yu and the indoor Kodakara-no-yu (open 15:00–9:30). Several guests call the riverside open-air bath the best they've had, but one found the water too hot to stay in for more than a minute and the changing area cold and windy in winter.

No policy stated in any source we read. Private open-air baths and rooms with their own open-air bath avoid sharing — ask the inn.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Getting there: there is no pickup. Buses run from Yunishigawa Onsen Station; the last (17:15) connects with the 14:30 limited express from Asakusa. Check-in is 15:00–17:30, check-out 10:00 (11:00 on some plans).

  2. 02

Winter tyres are required from late November to late March.

  3. 03

Official rates per adult, two sharing, with two meals: about ¥25,500 (standard), ¥27,500 (wagyu plan), ¥41,000 (semi-open-air bath) and ¥45,000 (open-air bath). A September 2025 guest paid about ¥22,000.

  4. 04

Recent reviews mention dust, sliding doors that stick, a cold breakfast room in January, and — on a ¥100,000-for-two stay — no one seeing them off at check-out.

  5. 05

The inn building itself is not a cultural property; the family's 1549 memorial stupa at nearby Jikoji temple is a Nikko City cultural property.
