Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

A former kappō inn in Iwaki-Yumoto reborn as a bargain onsen stay: a top-floor, free-flowing sulphur bath open all night and the okami's homemade-jam breakfast — but there's no dinner, no private bath, and it's an old building with dark corridors at night

Iwaso is a six-storey, 19-room inn on a quiet street of Iwaki-Yumoto, a spa town that bills itself as one of Japan's three oldest hot springs. It was once a kappō ryokan known for its food; magazines in its small library show dinner was still served around 2017, and the unused dinnerware is now sold off in a lobby corner. Today it offers only room-only or breakfast stays, from about ¥5,500–7,700 per person. The draw is the glass-walled bath on the top floor, which looks over the town to the hills where the sun rises. The water is Yumoto's sulphur–sodium chloride spring (pH 8.0, 58.3°C), free-flowing and open from 15:00 until 9:00 the next morning. The second draw is breakfast in the lobby lounge: eggs fried or scrambled to order, small home-style dishes, and toast with the okami's homemade jams. Japanese guests rate it 4.7 across 495 reviews on one major site (breakfast 4.8, bath 4.6) and 4.22 across 407 on another. Bloggers who stayed from 2022 to 2025 praise the spotless if dated building, fresh flowers, generous bath amenities, a goodbye at the door and the six-minute walk to the station. The 2026 complaints are about age: lobby and corridor lights switched off by about 22:00, a boiler failure in March that sent guests to bathe at another hotel, a stiff door lock, a stink bug in the bath, and big windows that may be visible from outside. Rooms vary widely, from 4-tatami singles to roadside 'discounted' rooms in the old wing.

Recomendadas

  • Main-building 'kutsurogi' Japanese rooms or the Japanese-Western rooms

The main room types: tatami rooms with a window-side sitting area (from ¥6,600 per person room-only) and Japanese-Western rooms with a bedroom beside a tatami room (from ¥7,700). A December 2024 blogger in a Japanese-Western room found it spacious, with a TV in each room, and paid ¥10,780 alone with breakfast. Rooms on the front side should look over the town; a family of five fit into a 10-mat room in August 2026. Futons are laid out before you arrive.

  • Single rooms (about 4 tatami), for solo travellers

From ¥5,500 room-only, with a bed, kettle, fridge, humidifier and a private unit bath with a washlet toilet. Bloggers in October 2024 and December 2025 found them comfortable — 'plenty, if you think of it as a business hotel' — though the window faces the hillside. The inn itself warns they don't suit anyone claustrophobic.

Mejor evitar

  • The 'wake-ari' (discounted) rooms, and the unnamed driver's room

Main-building discounted rooms (from ¥6,050) have no window-side sitting area and sit in front of the meeting/workation room. The old-wing 8- and 12-mat rooms (from ¥5,500) face the road and, the inn says, have an old-style toilet without a washlet — though an April 2026 guest found a washlet and almost no traffic noise. A July 2026 guest in an old-wing 12-mat room struggled with the door lock, and an August 2026 guest booked into a cheap former driver's/tour-guide room scored it 3/5. In-room unit baths use ordinary tap water, not spring water.

Consenso sobre el desayuno

4.5/5

A 'retro coffee-shop morning set' in the lounge (7:00–9:00, last entry 8:30): eggs fried or scrambled to order, toast or rice, small dishes such as iri-dōfu and simmered burdock, soup, a pudding, and three of the okami's homemade jams at a time — consistently the most praised part of the stay, though one August 2026 guest found it overstaffed and neither one thing nor the other

Room-only guests can add breakfast for ¥880 if they ask at the front desk by 19:00 the day before. The house blend coffee is free in the lounge from 7:00 to 9:30. Bloggers recommend an early-morning bath, when they had the bath to themselves and watched the sky lighten. No breakfast is served from 8 to 12 November 2026.

Claves de la cena

No dinner is served — the inn stopped serving it some years ago (magazines in the library show it was still served around 2017). You can bring food in (no cooking; take your rubbish home), and there's a microwave and vending machines on the second floor. A convenience store is about 3 minutes' walk away, and yakitori places and izakaya are on the way to the station; staff will suggest places. A 2022 blogger recommended the yakitori at Jūhachiban and Chabo, and a 2023 blogger was pointed to Jūhachiban at check-in and found it packed.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

Iwaki-Yumoto's sulphur–sodium chloride and sulphate spring (pH 8.0, 58.3°C at source), pumped from a borehole drilled deep inside the old coal-mine tunnels and shared with the town and Spa Resort Hawaiians. The official site calls it 100% free-flowing; a 2022 blogger noted a booking site also lists it as unheated with no added water.

Privacidad y ambiente

A single indoor bath for men and a single indoor bath for women on the top floor (no outdoor bath, no swap), with big windows over the town — fine for about 6–10 people, with eight washing spots, horse-oil toiletries, face towels and massage chairs. The sulphur smell is mild except near the inlet. There are no private (kashikiri) baths. Day visitors are admitted 15:00–20:00, but bloggers often had the bath to themselves late at night and early in the morning. Complaints: a September 2026 guest thought the windows might be visible from outside, and an August 2026 guest met a stink bug.

Política sobre tatuajes

The official bath page states that guests with tattoos are refused entry to the bath. There are no private baths, and in-room unit baths use tap water, so there is no alternative.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Check-in 15:00–22:00, check-out 10:00. Payment for the room and bathing tax is taken up front on arrival, there's no escort to your room or room service, and the official site's online booking works only in Japanese.

  2. 02

Cancellation: 20% from 6 to 3 days before, 50% two days before, 70% the day before, 100% on the day or for no-shows.

  3. 03

It's an old building that's kept spotless, but 2026 guests reported lobby and corridor lights turned off by about 22:00, and a boiler failure in March 2026 sent guests to bathe at another hotel. A May 2026 reviewer warned the bath was men-only during their stay — confirm both baths are open when booking.

  4. 04

Children are welcome: secondary-school age and up pay the adult rate, primary-school children 70%, ages 3 to preschool 50%, and under-3s stay free (¥3,300 for a futon).

  5. 05

The whole building is non-smoking (smoking only outside by the entrance). Parking is free (20 spaces), and some plans include tickets for Spa Resort Hawaiians or Aquamarine Fukushima.
