Gero's self-styled 'art inn' on the hill: antique-crammed lobbies, 20 of 44 rooms with their own open-air onsen, in-room Hida-beef dinners and a top-floor bath over the town lights — but breakfast underwhelms, the Moriyama wing is a long walk from the baths, and renovation noise runs until the end of 2026
Sasara opened in 1986 on a rise across the Hida River from Gero's onsen town, and calls itself an 'art inn': two lobbies hung with paintings and stained glass, an indoor waterfall and stream, a jazz bar, and a free-standing Yurari annex built by Hida temple carpenters from old timber the owner spent eight years collecting. Its 44 rooms are split between the newer eight-storey Sasara-kan, the older Moriyama-kan reached by an underground passage, and Yurari; 20 have their own open-air bath of hinoki, ceramic, rock or a hollowed log. The other draws are dinner served in your room or a private dining room — Hida beef in every plan, and Ryū no Hitomi rice cooked in a clay pot — and the top-floor bath looking over the town at night. Japanese guests rate it 4.5 across 3,118 reviews on one leading site (dinner, rooms, baths and service all 4.5) and 4.15 across 1,131 on another. Bloggers who stayed in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2026, and most 2026 reviewers, praise the silky water, the attentive room staff, the free station taxi and the quirky antique décor. The recurring complaint is breakfast: a make-your-own soy-milk tofu, hoba miso and chawanmushi tray with no grilled fish that many 2026 reviewers found plain. Others in 2026 mention mould on a large-bath wall, hair left in a changing room, rushed or confused in-room service, a locked pay-per-item fridge and the long walk with stairs between the Moriyama wing and the baths. Two-meal rates run about ¥20,000–44,000 per person, and ¥56,000–80,000 in the two special suites.

Sasara-kan rooms with an open-air bath — e.g. Moonlight (月の灯, 55㎡, ceramic or hinoki tub) or Serenade (風の囁き, 70㎡, rock tub)
Every Sasara-kan room looks over the onsen town, the Hida River and the hills, and dinner can be served in the room. 2026 guests loved bathing at any hour with the night view, the hinoki scent and the music you can play in the bath, and found they could adjust the temperature and flow themselves; one October 2026 couple wished the bath's washing area had a mirror. Two-meal rates for two people start at ¥35,420–38,720 per person on weekdays.
Sasara-kan standard Japanese and Japanese-Western rooms (55–60㎡), such as Ballade or Kikori
The cheapest way into the main wing, with the same town view: about ¥29,920 per person for two on weekdays, and the official plan includes 30 free minutes in the reservable private rock bath. The renovated Japanese-Western rooms have semi-double beds facing wide windows, and Komorebi's carpeted area takes a wheelchair or pushchair. A September 2026 reviewer in a Japanese-Western room found it roomy, with artwork everywhere down to the power sockets.

Moriyama-kan rooms (8–10 tatami), and the Moon River suite and Bosco until the end of 2026
The cheapest rooms (from about ¥20,240 per person) are in the older wing, a lift, an underground corridor and 28 downward steps from the eighth-floor baths — there's an escalator up but only stairs down, and several 2026 guests found the walk tiring. The Kotemari open-air room is tight: an October 2022 blogger said the 8-tatami room was crammed once the futons were laid and the tub fits one person; a 2024 blogger found it fine. Moon River (月の湯舟) and Bosco are being rebuilt until 31 December 2026.

Consenso sobre el desayuno
3.9/5A Japanese set in your room or a private dining room: tofu you set yourself from local soy milk, hoba miso, chawanmushi, salad and clay-pot rice — liked by some bloggers, but in 2026 the inn's most common complaint: plain, repetitive and without grilled fish
Take the free taxi from Gero Station (any company; the inn calls one for your return) and drop bags early to walk the town. Book the private baths, the 50-minute stone sauna (16:00–24:00) and dinner times at check-in. The 'Sleeping Beauty' option extends check-out to 12:00 for ¥1,600 per person. Six free EV chargers for guests.
Claves de la cena
4.2/5Seasonal kaiseki with Hida beef in every plan, served in your room (Sasara-kan and open-air-bath rooms) or a private dining room; the 'Hida-gyū zukushi' plan brings five beef dishes and Ryū no Hitomi rice. Bloggers in 2022 and 2023 had matsutake dobin-mushi, natto-fed Hida pork cooked at the table and a Hida-beef tomato hotpot finished as risotto; 2026 reviewers praise the volume and the rice. Critics found it bland, the matsutake faint, an ayu cold and the hoba miso salty (2026), and one plan limited sake to hot sake or the house cold sake. Extra beef dishes cost ¥3,600.
Onsen y bienestar: la realidad
Gero's colourless alkaline simple spring. The inn says every bath, including the in-room ones, uses source water and is open 24 hours; one major booking site lists the inn's spring as diluted, heated and recirculated/filtered without saying which baths. In the in-room tubs you run the hot source water yourself — about 50°C, an October 2022 blogger wrote, so you wait or add tap water.
The large baths are on the top (eighth) floor of Sasara-kan: an indoor bath and a Kiso-hinoki open-air bath looking over the town and the Hida River, plus a sauna on each side; a 2022 blogger noted the men's and women's sides don't swap. Two reservable private baths — a rock open-air bath and the 'nekko' tub carved from the root of a 700-year-old tree — are paid, but many plans include 30 minutes. 2026 reviewers noted slippery yu-no-hana on the tub floor, missing handrails in the indoor bath and a too-hot sauna without a timer.
The official site says guests with tattoos are firmly refused in the large baths. Twenty rooms have their own open-air bath.
Advertencias y matices locales
- 01
Check-in 15:00, check-out 10:30 (12:00 with the paid 'Sleeping Beauty' option). Breakfast starts by 8:30 at the latest.
- 02
Renovation of the Moon River suite and Bosco runs until 31 December 2026: loud demolition noise from 10:30 to 15:00, and the whole inn closes on 1–2 December. A September 2026 guest found scaffolding outside the window without warning.
- 03
The room fridge is a pay-per-item locked type and ice costs extra; drinks at the lobby bar are paid or come with a ticket on some plans.
- 04
Children are welcome: preschoolers pay ¥1,100 without meals or bedding, with children's dinners and baby goods to borrow; weekday family plans halve children's rates.
- 05
Getting to the baths from the Moriyama wing means a long walk with stairs down, and the large baths' indoor tub has no handrails — choose Sasara-kan if walking is difficult.
