A friendly, family-minded Gero inn founded in 1818, with a 1,100-tsubo garden, a big riverside open-air bath, Hida beef hoba-miso dinners in private rooms and trains rumbling over the bridge outside — but the building is old, the baths are partly recirculated and down a steep flight of stairs
Bosenkan opened in 1818 as one of Gero's first inns, and its name means 'the inn that looks out on the river': it sits on the bank of the Hida River beside the JR Takayama Line bridge, around a 1,100-tsubo Japanese garden, with a lobby floored in tiles an earlier owner imported from Spain. It's a big house, and much of its appeal is practical: a large stone open-air bath over the river, shallow children's baths, three bookable private open-air baths, a kids' corner and 1,000 manga, and dinners served in private rooms. Japanese guests rate it 4.2 across 1,991 reviews on one major site (baths and dinner both 4.4) and 4.17 across 1,638 on another, where facilities score lowest at 3.87. Bloggers from 2023 to 2026 praise the silky alkaline water, the A5 Hida beef hoba-miso, warm staff, winter fireworks seen from the room and trains passing the window — a hit with children. The catches are just as consistent: the building shows its age, the baths are reached by steep stairs, and 2025–2026 guests mention footsteps from the corridor, bouncy floors, hot loft rooms in summer, pricey vending machines, no comb in the amenities and staff whose Japanese can be hard to follow. Two-meal plans run from about ¥14,600 per person to ¥26,400 in a room with its own open-air bath; a December 2025 blogger paid about ¥64,000 for two.

Kawa-no-ryō Shikisai (川の寮 四季彩), the rooms with their own open-air bath
Only five of these special rooms, facing the Hida River with the railway bridge right in front — 'the tracks are before your eyes', a September 2023 blogger wrote of a 12-mat room. Japanese-style rooms have a ceramic tub big enough for two (a 2024 blogger loved watching trains from it); Western-style ones have a maki-wood tub and are barrier-free. The tub is for soaking only — wash in the room's unit bath or the large baths. From about ¥26,400 per person for two with dinner in a private room.
Rooms on the river and garden side, high up, or the Yugamine loft room for families
Bloggers on the upper floors watched the winter Saturday fireworks from their rooms in March 2026 (from an eighth-floor room, one noted lower floors see less), and the 15-mat two-room river-and-garden rooms suit families. The Yugamine loft room with bunk-style beds delighted children in July and September 2026 — though both families found the loft hot in summer. The three Sansuitei garden annexes (wooden open-air baths, renovated in May 2025) are smoking rooms unless you ask for deodorising.

Standard 8-mat rooms on the mountain/town side, and anyone sensitive to noise
These are the cheapest rooms and a common choice among 2026 reviewers; they're plain, and in October 2026 one family heard footsteps from the corridor and found the floor 'bouncy' in the room and bath. Trains run past the inn from early morning. Some rooms, including some of these, are smoking rooms — request deodorising (a July 2026 reviewer said it worked) or book a non-smoking type. Room fridges are empty and a December 2025 blogger found no comb in the amenities.

La cocina a fondo
Consenso sobre el desayuno
4.1/5A Japanese set breakfast (not a buffet) with local rice and miso soup, a hot pot, grilled fish and Gifu's Meihō ham — praised by most, though a 2023 blogger called it 'ordinary'
Book a dinner plan from the start: a September 2026 reviewer on a breakfast-only plan couldn't add dinner later, and nearby restaurants turned them away without reservations. Reserve a private open-air bath (45 minutes, ¥2,200) at the front desk as soon as you check in — it's first come, first served. The free shuttle leaves Gero Station at 14:30, 15:00 and 15:30.
Claves de la cena
4.3/5Kaiseki of about ten dishes built around A5 Hida beef grilled on a magnolia leaf with the head chef's own miso, served 18:00–21:00 in one of 18 private dining rooms (Kangetsu), the garden-view Kansui restaurant or Kirakutei; richer plans add roast beef, shabu-shabu and a rice pot of Hida beef. Bloggers in 2023–2026 loved the hoba-miso, a tomato-curry hot pot, A5 steak and Koshihikari rice served in a wooden tub. Complaints in 2026: dishes over burners made a July dining room hot, a September one so cold the pot wouldn't heat, a small portion of beef, and dishes that young children found unfamiliar. Takayama ramen and local sake are served after dinner at Hōrai in the basement.
Onsen y bienestar: la realidad
Gero's alkaline simple spring (pH 8.9) from the town's central mixed supply, pumped and piped in. The inn's posted data lists the baths as partly recirculated and filtered, with fresh spring water flowing in at 48 L a minute, a little water added to adjust the temperature, no heating, disinfection, a 43°C bath and a full change every seven days. A June 2026 blogger who'd been put off by 'recirculated' found fresh water overflowing steadily.
Two large baths on the basement levels, open 15:00–10:00 (closed around 3:00–3:30 for cleaning) and lit up 18:00–24:00: the men's side has a big stone open-air bath with a lying-down tub by the river and a 30cm children's bath; the women's has big windows and a children's open-air bath with a tatami-lined shallow area. Guests love the silky water and a graded hot-to-lukewarm outdoor bath, but some find them not large, with few washing spaces, busy around 21:00, and reached by steep stairs that are hard for older guests. Three bookable private open-air baths (two hinoki, one rock) face the river and bridge; they're cold in winter and can have insects in summer. A garden foot bath is open 5:00–23:00.
The inn's English site says people with tattoos may not use the public baths and recommends the private open-air baths instead.

Check-in 15:00 (call if arriving after 17:00), check-out 10:00. Free taxis run from Gero Station 12:00–14:00 and 17:00–18:30, and a shuttle returns to the station at 9:00, 9:35 and 10:00.
- 02
The large baths are on the lowest basement floor, reached from the lift by steep stairs — awkward with toddlers or for anyone unsteady on their feet.
- 03
A family inn: shallow children's baths, a play space with a slide, 1,000 manga, table tennis (¥500 for 30 minutes) and billiards (¥1,500 an hour), and family plans with discounted child rates.
- 04
The building is old: 2025–2026 reviewers mention worn fittings, a stray hair in the bathroom, ¥180–190 vending-machine drinks and staff who are friendly but occasionally hard to understand.
- 05
The inn is a little outside the town centre — about 10 minutes on foot — and trains cross the bridge in front from early morning.
