Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

Gero's big bath-hopping inn: a 100-tatami 'tatami bath', five shared baths, nine private ones and a menu of Hida-beef dinners in the middle of town — but it's a 120-room maze, the private baths cost extra, and 2026 reviews complain of queues and uneven service

Ogawaya has stood on the Hida river in the centre of Gero Onsen since 1949 and has grown into a 120-room complex of linked buildings. Its signature is Shirasagi no Yu, a roughly 100-tatami bath whose floor is laid with tatami that stays soft and non-slip (renovated May 2022). Around it are four more shared baths — a second tatami bath, a riverside open-air bath, a white 'micro-bubble' bath and the modern Sen spa with artificially carbonated water — plus nine bookable private baths and a range of rooms with their own onsen tubs. Dinners centre on A4-grade Hida beef, from the 'Triple Choice' kaiseki, where each person picks three dishes, to the seven-beef-dish Zanmai Kiwami. Few independent blogs cover the inn — two 2024 stay reports by local writers on Gifu's tourism site are the main first-hand accounts — so most recent evidence comes from booking-site reviews. Those are strong in number: 4.3 across 6,614 reviews on one major Japanese site (baths 4.6, service 4.1) and 4.42 across 4,903 on another (baths 4.58). Guests in 2026 praise the tatami bath and silky alkaline water, generous beef dinners, the central location for strolling the onsen town, and baby-friendly plans. The complaints, also from 2025–2026: check-in queues of 30 minutes or more, a confusing layout with lift changes to reach the baths, staff with mixed results, a breakfast buffet that some found ordinary or crowded, slow or overcooked dinner courses, ageing standard rooms and a tight car park. Two-meal plans start around ¥14,400 per person; most 2026 reviewers paid about ¥13,000–30,000.

Recomendadas

  • Onsen-bath rooms facing the Hida river — Koboku (伍睦), Sarai/Daidai (杷・橙), Kasuga (春日) and Rokkan Ichi (碌間-壱)

These have their own onsen bath, open-air or semi-open-air over the river; the inn describes Kasuga's as free-flowing. Sarai and Daidai mix Nordic furniture with tatami (designed by bazik's Yuki Takizawa), and Rokkan Ichi is a 65㎡ room on the sixth floor. A December 2025 guest called the free-flowing open-air room bath the highlight of the trip, and a July 2026 guest in Koboku loved the river view — though a gap in the wooden screen to the next room's bath sat at eye level. Suite and luxury-room plans include a creative kaiseki and a separate breakfast, served in your room or a private dining room.

  • Tonerico (梣) for families with a baby

A mountain-side Nordic-Japanese room with an indoor onsen bath of Towada stone; a local writer stayed here in 2024 on the inn's baby plan, whose perks include nappies, a bottle-sterilising set, a private dining room and no cancellation fee if the baby falls ill. A July 2026 parent also praised staff for bringing a baby chair and laying out futons for a nap.

Mejor evitar

  • Tsumugi (紬), the no-bath rooms and the Yuragi annex

Tsumugi rooms (18–23㎡) have only a shower booth, and the cheapest Japanese rooms have no bath at all — some in the Kōryūkaku wing involve about 25 steps. A July 2026 guest in a Western double found it small, with the washbasin in the bedroom and a cramped toilet. The Yuragi annex felt 'like a business hotel' to one January 2026 guest, and 2026 reviewers staying in annex rooms got lost reaching the baths. Some mountain-side standard rooms allow smoking, and a May 2026 guest could hear the neighbours through the wall.

A buffet of about 50 Japanese and Western dishes, with hoba-miso, keichan chicken and a Hida-beef curry that local writers singled out — liked by many, but 2025–2026 reviewers also called it ordinary, salty or short on variety, and an April 2026 guest waited 20 minutes at 7:30 with dishes running out

Book the private baths online before you arrive: in July 2026 a queue formed from 14:30, dinner times were allotted first-come and few private-bath slots were left by 15:30. Small towels are free and unlimited at the baths; bath towels stay in your room. Colour yukata rent for ¥330, handy for strolling the onsen town.

Kaiseki built around A4-grade-or-better Hida beef, served in the Kisakitei restaurant (open kitchen), Futaba, the private rooms of Yūsaian and Kanare, or in your room on some plans. Options range from the 'Triple Choice' (each person picks three dishes), the standard Hida beef and seasonal kaiseki, Hida beef suki-shabu and the best-selling Tokusen Hida-gyū Zanmai to the seven-beef-dish Kiwami; extra beef sushi or stone-grilled steak can be ordered until 18:00 (20 a day). Most 2026 reviewers loved the beef and the portions, but others found courses slow to arrive, the meat overcooked or the volume small. The inn cannot reduce portions or cater to vegan or low-salt requests.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

Gero's alkaline simple spring (pH 8.9), clear and silky. The inn describes the in-room baths of its onsen rooms and the seven private baths in the Yuragi annex as free-flowing; it does not say whether the large shared baths are free-flowing or recirculated. The Sen spa uses partly artificial carbonated water, and the Shirotae bath adds a 'white ion' micro-bubble system.

Privacidad y ambiente

Five shared baths in two sets that swap by time: Shirasagi (tatami floor, sauna) with the Shirotae open-air and white bath, and Yakushi (also tatami) with the Kajika open-air bath, each 12:00–25:00 for one sex and 5:00–10:00 for the other; the Sen spa is women-only in the evening and men-only in the morning. Nine private baths cost extra per 45 minutes: seven in the Yuragi annex (12:30–21:45, two people, ¥4,400–4,950) and two in the main building (15:30–21:30, up to four, ¥3,300, reached by stairs). Guests praise the clean changing rooms and the soft tatami; some found the outdoor baths, reached by stairs, hard for older guests.

Política sobre tatuajes

Tattoos are not allowed in the large shared baths, according to the official site. No policy is stated for the private or in-room baths — contact the inn.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

    Check-in 15:00, check-out 11:00 — but the shared baths close to guests at 10:00, so a late-morning soak before leaving isn't possible.

  2. 02

It's a large, multi-building inn: several 2026 guests had to change lifts or climb stairs to reach the baths and got lost on the way.

  3. 03

Many reviews praise the front-line staff's care, but others in 2025–2026 report long check-ins and confused explanations.

  4. 04

Food allergies must be notified in advance by phone or online booking; the inn won't change seasonings, fully remove ingredients or reduce portions.

  5. 05

Parking is free (80 spaces), but several 2025–2026 reviewers found the car park cramped and hard to manoeuvre in.
