Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

A 148-room beach inn a minute from Shirarahama, loved for its open-kitchen buffet and two hot springs — book the high-floor Nagitei rooms for the sea view and rooftop bath, and expect crowds, long walks to the annex and no free toothbrush

Musashi traces its roots to Kinjōkan, an inn the naturalist Minakata Kumagusu used to frequent; it moved to Shirahama and took the name Musashi in 1950. Today it's a big, family-friendly house of 148 Japanese-style rooms in the middle of town, one minute's walk from the white sand of Shirarahama, renovated in 2018 with a rooftop bath, Tenkū, reserved for guests of the top-floor Nagitei rooms. It's the only inn in Shirahama with two springs: its own Saimei-yu in the large and medium baths, and the saltier Suzushi-yu, piped from a nearby spring, flowing through the open-air and private baths. Japanese guests rate it 4.3 across 2,866 reviews on one major site (dinner and breakfast both 4.5) and 4.33 across 2,402 on another. Most praise is for the buffet: steak and tempura cooked to order, sushi, sashimi, kue hotpot and lots of choice for children. Beachgoers in summer 2026 liked the outdoor showers, changing room and float pumps for swimmers. Travellers from 2023 to 2026 also enjoyed a kue-and-Kumano-beef kaiseki, having the rooftop bath to themselves and birthday surprises from staff. The complaints are about scale: a crowded buffet, slow check-in in summer, uneven staff, the annex reached by stairs and a single small lift, a dated feel, chlorine noticed in the indoor bath, and — several times in September 2026 — no toothbrush or comb in the room, sold at the shop instead. Buffet stays run about ¥15,700–33,400 per person for two sharing, and ¥54,340 for the VIP suite.

Recomendadas

  • Nagitei (和邸), floors 14–16 — Shirarahama- or Engetsu-tō-view rooms

The top-floor wing, with big windows towards the beach, Engetsu-tō islet and the sunset, and access to the rooftop Tenkū bath and a lounge with free drinks. March 2025 travellers on the 15th floor could see the whole beach on opening the shoji, and noted lower floors look into the hotel in front. Sizes run 39–48㎡, plus an 88㎡ VIP room. A February 2026 traveller found a Nagitei room not very large; its in-room bath looked out to sea but wasn't onsen.

  • Aoi-kan (葵館) Shirarahama-view rooms

Japanese rooms and twins of 40–49㎡ with a beach view, a step down in price from Nagitei (about ¥19,900–23,000 per person with the buffet in October 2026). An August 2026 family found their sea-view room roomy, and a family of five in July 2026 had plenty of space.

Mejor evitar

  • Hanare Hototogisu annex (はなれ・時鳥), and Aoi-kan rooms without a view

The cheapest rooms (8 or 10 tatami, from about ¥15,700 per person). The inn itself warns that reaching the annex means a connecting corridor with stairs; 2026 guests counted 11 steps between two lifts, found it far from the lobby and restaurant, and the second lift small and single. Rooms had renovated bathrooms but look dated, see little or no sea, and one January 2025 guest found the toilet cold. Cheaper Aoi-kan rooms face a building.

The same Japanese-Western-Chinese buffet at the Nishiki restaurant from 7:00 (bread and miso soup are singled out), or a Japanese set breakfast of kama-cooked rice and grilled fish on kaiseki plans

Book on the official site for a ¥1,000 in-house voucher. Bring your own toothbrush and comb — September 2026 guests found none in the room. Beachgoers can use the outdoor showers, changing room and lockers before check-in. Parking is free (220 spaces) but paid after check-out in the summer holidays; the free town shuttle runs from JR Shirahama Station.

4.3/5

Most plans include the open-kitchen buffet (18:00–21:00, last entry 19:30): steak and tempura cooked to order, sushi with chūtoro, sashimi, kue hotpot, Chinese dishes and desserts, with a late-night nikusui soup. Guests from 2023 to 2026 rave about the choice, but it's crowded and made-to-order dishes can be slow. Kaiseki plans are served in semi-private rooms at Baibachi-tei, featuring Kumano beef and local kue; bloggers in January 2025 and February 2026 called theirs superb.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

Two springs. Suzushi-yu, a sodium-magnesium chloride spring piped from a nearby source (59°C), is free-flowing in the open-air and private baths, diluted about 7:3 with water to cool it. The inn's own Saimei-yu, a sodium chloride spring (39°C), fills the large and medium baths with a little water added and heating, and the inn lists the medium bath as recirculated; a February 2026 guest noticed chlorine indoors.

Privacidad y ambiente

Shared large and medium baths on separate floors, with a bubble bath, sauna, cold bath and a walled open-air bath with no sea view (the inn says so). Nagitei guests also get Tenkū, a rooftop open-air bath on the 17th floor with views of the beach and Engetsu-tō (no washing area, closed in bad weather, 15:00–22:00 and 6:00–10:00); 2025–2026 bloggers often had it to themselves. Two private semi-open-air baths cost ¥3,300 for 45 minutes, booked by phone.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

    Check-in 15:00, check-out 10:00. Cancellation: 30% from 3 days before, 50% the day before, 100% on the day.

  2. 02

This is a large, busy house: staff don't escort guests to their rooms, the buffet is crowded in peak season, and reviewers in 2026 found staff service uneven.

  3. 03

Only one of three lifts reaches the rooftop bath, and the Hototogisu annex involves stairs — not ideal with mobility issues, though wheelchairs are lent and the lobby has an accessible toilet.

  4. 04

Very child-friendly: under-twos sharing a bed stay free, with free children's yukata, baby goods and buffet high chairs.

  5. 05

The beach can be partly closed for summer events and fireworks; check the inn's news page if you're coming to swim.
