Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

The century-old inn where Suwa's first drilled hot spring was struck in 1920, known for award-winning kaiseki in private garden dining rooms and summer fireworks launched right in front — but the baths are recirculated, small outdoors and have no lake view, and low-floor 'lake view' rooms see the lake through trees

Nunohan traces its name to Nunoya Hansuke, a kimono shop opened in Suwa in 1848. In 1920 the third-generation Hansuke drilled what the inn calls Suwa's first bored hot spring and opened Nunohan Bessō on the lakeshore; the lakeside onsen town grew up around it. The tanka poet Saitō Mokichi, first invited in 1913 by the Suwa-born poet Shimaki Akahiko, made it a regular Suwa base, and the inn lists Dazai Osamu, Shimazaki Tōson and Matsumoto Seichō among later guests. Today it has about 35 rooms: 24 tatami rooms in the lake-side main building and 12 renovated rooms with two beds in a town-side annex, around a garden. Its draw is the food. It has won the cuisine category of the 'Japan's 100 Best Hotels and Ryokan as chosen by professionals' list every year since 2011, and the better plans are served in 17 private dining rooms on the garden. Japanese guests rate it 4.7 across 820 reviews on one major site (dinner 4.8) and 4.54 across 1,268 on another (dinner 4.64, baths 4.47). Most recent evidence comes from these booking-site reviews; the two independent blogs describe stays in 2023 and June 2024. Reviewers praise plates served at the right temperature, wagyu soy-milk shabu-shabu, polite staff and watching the nightly summer fireworks from lake-side rooms. The catches: a booking site lists the baths as watered down, heated and recirculated, and a July 2026 guest smelled chlorine; the outdoor tubs are small and there's no lake view from the baths; a 2024 blogger's second-floor 'lake view' room saw the lake through a wall and street trees; and in 2025–2026 guests mentioned long walks through a confusing layout, a broken door lock and uneven front-desk service. Two-meal plans run about ¥19,000–30,000+ per person.

Recomendadas

  • Lake-side main building 10-tatami rooms on the 4th–5th floors (湖側本館 4階or5階 10畳和室)

Sleeps up to five, with a window-side sitting area facing Lake Suwa and Hatsushima island, the launch point for the fireworks. Guests in July and August 2026 watched the nightly fireworks head-on from the room, and a July 2026 guest on the fourth floor described a full view of the lake. Groups of up to seven can take the two-room 11+6-tatami type; five colleagues shared one in November 2025. Ask for a top-floor room — the 2024 blogger thinks the upper floors clear the trees.

  • Town-side annex 10-tatami Japanese-modern rooms with two beds (街側別邸 10畳和モダン)

Renovated rooms with two full-size beds on tatami, sleeping up to four, and the cheaper choice if you don't need a view. 2026 reviewers found them bright, clean and roomy, with soft indirect lighting, and one April 2026 guest found them close to the baths and dining rooms. The fireworks aren't visible, but the lakeshore is a minute away, and staff suggest watching from the lakeshore park anyway for the sound.

  • Lake-side rooms on the 2nd–3rd floors, and town-side rooms in summer

The June 2024 blogger booked a 'lake view' room and got the second floor, where the lake showed only over a wall and street trees, with a parking lot in between. The 2023 blogger's town-side room had no view and strong afternoon sun in summer. Older rooms show their age: a May 2026 guest found a traditional tatami room only lightly refreshed, a January 2026 guest's door wouldn't lock, and staff said other rooms had the same problem. A March 2026 guest saw a stain on an annex wall, and a September 2026 guest noticed a smell in the room.

Consenso sobre el desayuno

4.4/5

A Japanese set with homemade yudōfu (simmered tofu), local Suwa dishes and Shinshu Milky Queen rice; reviewers mention an agar-jelly salad and handmade tofu. Most rate it highly, though the 2024 blogger found it 'orthodox' and an August 2026 Obon guest gave it 3 out of 5

Book a lake-side room on the 4th–5th floor well ahead for late July to late August, when 10-minute fireworks go up nightly at 20:30; the inn's on-site seats for the 15 August 2026 festival sold out. Plans marked 個室食事処 get a private dining room; 広間食 plans eat in a shared hall. Free coffee is served in the garden lounge after breakfast, and there are lobby concerts some evenings.

Claves de la cena

4.6/5

The base Yamafutokoro kaiseki has wagyu soy-milk shabu-shabu as the main course; the inn calls its Shinshu Premium beef tōban-yaki plan its most popular, and also offers a smaller 'bimi shōryō' course and the head chef's top Kokyō no Kiwami course. Cheaper hall plans centre on a hotpot of Shinshu ginjō pork in sake lees and miso — the 2024 blogger found even this 'entry' course carefully made, with rice cooked at the table (about 40 minutes) and tables set far apart. Reviewers in 2026 praise hot dishes on warm plates and cold dishes on chilled ones, rice cooked with conger eel, fried small Lake Suwa ayu and a local sake tasting set. Complaints: too much food (November 2025), sashimi that wasn't quite fresh (October 2025), dishes laid out early that had dried in the heating (March 2026) and a menu that never changes for repeat guests (March 2026).

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

Kamisuwa's alkaline simple spring, 64.5°C at source, colourless and odourless with a faint salty taste. The inn says the spring has flowed here since its 1920 drilling. A major booking site lists the baths as watered down, heated and recirculated with filtration; a July 2026 guest noticed a chlorine smell in Tai no Yu.

Privacidad y ambiente

Two ground-floor baths, Tai no Yu (all-hinoki indoor bath with a garden outdoor tub) and Hirame no Yu (rock outdoor tub), swap between men and women at 1:00. They're open from check-in until 24:00 and again from 1:00 to check-out. There are no private or reservable baths, and no in-room onsen. The baths don't look onto the lake — the 2024 blogger flagged this. Guests like the soft water, the free ice lollies and the free massage chairs after bathing, but several in 2025–2026 found the outdoor tubs small. One saw insects floating in the outdoor tub (May 2026), and the hair dryers had queues (July 2026). The baths are a long walk from some rooms, so carry your towels from the room.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Check-in 15:00, check-out 10:00. Free parking without reservation (the official site says 40 spaces), with EV parking; Kami-Suwa Station, where all limited expresses stop, is a 7–8-minute walk.

  2. 02

The building is a sprawl of main building, annex and garden corridors: 2025–2026 guests found it confusing and the baths far from their room.

  3. 03

Lake views depend on floor and wing: only lake-side rooms face the lake, and 2nd–3rd floor rooms may see it over a wall and trees. 'Room assigned by the inn' plans can land on either side.

  4. 04

Service gets mostly warm reviews, but in 2025–2026 a few guests met curt phone or front-desk staff, and a March 2026 repeat guest felt the front desk had become less attentive than on earlier visits.

  5. 05

Families are welcome, with children's meals, allergy-adjusted menus and large rooms that sleep five to seven. All rooms are non-smoking, and Wi-Fi is free.
