Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

A big, family-friendly Kyoritsu Resort inn with seven free, no-booking private onsen baths, buffet meals and free late-night ramen — good value, but the water is recirculated and chlorinated, and at busy times the private baths have queues

Katsuragawa opened in October 2020 as the first inn in Kyoritsu Resort's budget 'Yumeguri no Yado' line, in an older building that guests say has been thoroughly renovated inside. It has 116 rooms, most of them 10- or 14-tatami Japanese rooms with low twin beds, and the whole house is shoes-off: you leave your shoes at the entrance and walk the tatami corridors barefoot or in socks. The draw is the seven private baths — rock, hinoki, a red ceramic pot, an octagonal tub and more — free and with no booking: if the light is on, you walk in and lock the door for about 30 minutes. There are also two top-floor shared baths with rock or hinoki outdoor tubs. Dinner and breakfast are buffets with a live kitchen, and the extras are free: welcome drinks, ice lollies, soft drinks with meals, colourful yukata and Kyoritsu's late-night soy-sauce ramen. Most recent evidence comes from booking-site reviews: Japanese guests rate it 4.34 across 1,980 reviews on one major site (baths 4.46, service 4.43, dinner 4.19) and 4.3 across 195 on another. Guests in 2026 praised the private baths, the fried horse mackerel at breakfast, friendly staff and things for children to do. The complaints: the spring water is diluted, heated and recirculated, and some smell the chlorine; private baths had waits on busy nights; dinner sittings are set times; and some 2026 guests found food cold or ordinary, single rooms musty and in-room fans noisy. Recent guests paid about ¥15,000–24,000 per person with two meals.

Guía para elegir habitación

Recomendadas

  • Japanese rooms with low twin beds (10 or 14 tatami), ideally on the 4th floor

Most of the 116 rooms are this type: tatami with knee-high beds plus futons for extra guests. A blogger found a 10-tatami room 'almost like new', with a sunken kotatsu table and a separate bath, toilet and two sinks. In August and September 2026, guests on the 4th floor liked being close to the private baths.

  • Japanese rooms with an open-air bath (12.5 tatami, 8 rooms)

Families and couples in August–October 2026 enjoyed being able to bathe at any hour, and one guest liked the bath salts, lemon and hinoki blocks provided. The catch, stated by the inn: this bath is not onsen. You fill it yourself, and one guest found it small, big enough for one adult and a child.

Mejor evitar

  • Business singles (12㎡) and twins (18㎡)

The inn calls them cramped and recommends them only to people who don't mind the room. They're cheap for solo travellers, but 2026 reviews of singles mention musty or stale smells, dust, an old unit bath with a loose drain cover, no mirror and a ventilation fan that runs all night. Western rooms and business twins don't take children under 3.

La cocina a fondo

Consenso sobre el desayuno

4.2/5

A buffet (7:00–9:30, last orders 9:00) with build-your-own seafood rice bowls, small Izu side dishes and whole horse mackerel fried at the live counter, which guests single out again and again. Some wanted more fruit and better desserts.

The private baths are busiest after check-in and after dinner. Guests report walking straight in around midnight, early morning or on weekdays. Bring towels from your room, and take the bath mat from the waiting area. Dinner sittings are allocated in check-in order, so arrive early if you want the earlier one. Free ramen is served 22:00–23:00.

Claves de la cena

3.8/5

A 90-minute buffet in the Yūraku restaurant, in one sitting or two (e.g. 17:30 and 19:30) depending on the day. You can't book a time in advance and there are no private rooms. Japanese, Western and Chinese dishes include sashimi, sushi, tempura and seared beef from the live kitchen, plus local touches like simmered kinmedai. Soft drinks are free; all-you-can-drink alcohol is ¥1,980 for 60 minutes, and you can't bring your own. In 2026, opinion split: some guests were delighted, others found the sashimi and desserts mediocre, the food lukewarm at a late sitting, or the menu 'aimed at children'. Extra à-la-carte dishes such as abalone or Fuji beef can be added.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

Shuzenji's alkaline simple spring (a blend from the town's shared supply, per the official site). A major booking site lists it as diluted, heated and recirculated with filtration; a blogger notes the private baths are not free-flowing, and 2026 guests mention a chlorine smell. The open-air tubs in the eight bath-equipped rooms are not onsen at all.

Privacidad y ambiente

Seven free private baths (Tōji, Meisō, Iwakura, Hiba, Hakkaku, Shuko, Tsuchikabe), open 15:00–25:00 and 5:00–10:00 with no booking: a light shows which are free, and you wait in that bath's waiting seat. Each has a shower, body soap only. Two shared baths on the top floor, each with an indoor bath and a rock or hinoki outdoor tub with mountain views (15:00–24:00, 5:00–10:00), are often near-empty because everyone heads for the private baths. No sauna. Free massage chairs in the rest area.

Política sobre tatuajes

Explicit: the inn's FAQ says guests with tattoos may not use the large shared baths, and asks them to use the seven free private baths instead.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Check-in 15:00, check-out 11:00 (some cheaper plans check out at 10:00). Arriving right at 15:00 can mean a wait: you're given a number. A 2022 blogger waited about 30 minutes, and a March 2026 guest also found check-in slow.

  2. 02

Cancellation: 10% from 7 days before, 20% from 4 days, 50% from 2 days, 80% on the day with notice, 100% for no-shows.

  3. 03

No shuttle from Shuzenji Station: take the bus to Miyukibashi (3 minutes' walk) or a taxi (about 8 minutes). Parking is free (50 spaces, overflow sent to paid lots) and you can't reserve it.

  4. 04

The whole inn is shoes-off. A 2026 guest with sore knees found walking in socks hard, but wheelchair users liked it, and wheelchairs can be borrowed.

  5. 05

This is a big, lively family inn, with game corners, karaoke, table tennis, mahjong and a kids' play area. There are no baby cots or child-size futons, and Western rooms take children from age 3.
