Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

Fifteen registered-heritage buildings around a carp pond and a 1934 hinoki bathhall designed by a painter — lovely, if you can manage the stairs and a cold winter corridor

Arai Ryokan opened in Shuzenji in 1872, and fifteen of its buildings — dating from 1881 to the 1930s and linked by bridges and corridors around a carp pond — were registered as Tangible Cultural Properties in 1998. Painters shaped it: Yasuda Yukihiko designed the famous Tenpyo bathhall and several rooms, and Yokoyama Taikan had a private room built. The Tenpyo bath (1934) is the reason most people come: all hinoki with an Izu-stone rim, a window onto the carp pond and no taps — you scoop water with a wooden bucket. Japanese guests rate the baths highest (4.6–4.75 across three booking sites, with 439 reviews on one) and like the attentive room attendants, the gardens and the bridges. Many rooms have their own onsen bath too. The complaints are about age and consistency: stairs and steps everywhere with no lift, outdoor corridors and bathrooms that are cold in winter, food that some find ordinary for the price or served lukewarm, thin futons, and two scathing 2026 reviews about rude staff. Recent guests paid roughly ¥23,000–30,000+ per person with two meals.

Guía para elegir habitación

Recomendadas

  • Semi-special rooms (準特別室) by the pond

The rooms bloggers rave about: a 4-tatami anteroom plus a 10-tatami main room, an onsen bath of your own, and in the Kiri wing you can feed the carp from the window. A 2022 group of four in the connected Kiri 1 and Kiri 3 rooms had both meals served in the room.

  • Yuki wing (雪の棟, 1899), even the cheapest rooms

A January 2025 solo guest who booked the cheapest 'leave it to us' room was given a 10-tatami room with a veranda and an in-room onsen bath on the second floor of the Yuki wing; a 2023 guest was upgraded to the novelist Ozaki Koyo's room in the same wing.

Mejor evitar

  • Any room, if stairs are a problem

The inn says it is not suitable as barrier-free: there are always steps or stairs between the lobby, rooms and baths, there is no lift, and wheelchairs can't be used inside. One 2025 guest found the Katsura wing's second-floor stairs steep without a handrail.

  • Hana wing (花の棟), if you are a light sleeper

Renovated in 2023 and with a Michelin Green Guide-starred view of the bamboo path, but a February 2026 guest couldn't sleep for air-conditioning and river noise. Only the Katsura wing has beds (a twin room with a shower booth).

La cocina a fondo

Consenso sobre el desayuno

4.3/5

A three-tier lacquered breakfast box (sandan-ju) with local Koshihikari rice

Join the free guide talk on the inn's history (10:00 and 16:00, 15–20 minutes, guests only, in Japanese), and use the free private bath Hisui — no booking, just lock the door. The other private bath, Suiren, is ¥1,100 for 45 minutes, booked at the front desk on the day.

Claves de la cena

4.1/5

Kaiseki that changes monthly, with fresh wasabi grated in front of you, served from 18:00 or 18:30 in the Seikei dining room (with two semi-private rooms) or, on some plans, in your room. Reviewers on two sites score dinner around 4.5, but bloggers are cooler: a 2023 guest found it 'far too thin for the price', a 2020 guest found it unmemorable, and an August 2026 review said warm dishes arrived cold. If you arrive after 19:00 there is no dinner.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

An alkaline simple spring (pH 8.5, 61.2°C at source). The inn says the baths are free-flowing without recirculation, with water added when the source runs too hot; a 2020 blogger saw the posted analysis noting added water and disinfection.

Privacidad y ambiente

The Tenpyo bathhall (1934), the Ayame bath (renewed 2023) and two open-air baths — Komorebi-no-yu in the garden and Orifushi-no-yu Sekka, opened in 2023 — all rotate between men and women by time, which some guests find confusing. Large baths are open 15:00 until the next morning; the open-air baths close from midnight to 7:00. Komorebi-no-yu borders a public road, and one guest found the Ayame bath too hot at about 43°C.

Política sobre tatuajes

The inn asks guests with tattoos not to use the large baths. The free private bath Hisui, the bookable Suiren and in-room baths are the alternatives.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Getting there: bus from Izu-Hakone Railway Shuzenji Station to Shuzenji Onsen (10 minutes, ¥260) and a 3-minute walk, or a taxi for about ¥1,600. There is no station pickup. Free parking for 20 cars.

  2. 02

    Check-in is 15:00 and check-out 11:00; you can't go in before check-in.

  3. 03

Winter: corridors are outdoor or semi-outdoor, and guests in January 2026 found the in-room toilet and washbasin cold.

  4. 04

Small gripes in 2026 reviews: no glasses in the room, thin futons, and algae on the pond window hiding the carp from the Tenpyo bath.

  5. 05

Children aged 3 and over pay ¥8,250 (including a child's dinner and breakfast); under-3s sharing a bed stay free.
