Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

A Mitsubishi family villa with a garden by Ogawa Jihei and a wing by Togo Murano, where every room has its own onsen bath — superb for architecture and gardens, less so for anyone who minds long corridors or wants a showpiece dinner

Sanyoso was built in 1929 as the villa of Iwasaki Hisaya, eldest son of Mitsubishi's founder, with a garden by the Kyoto gardener Ogawa Jihei. It opened as a ryokan in 1947, and the main building is now a registered tangible cultural property. In 1988 the architect Togo Murano, then over 90, added a new wing. Today it is run by Prince Hotels and has 22 rooms, all with their own bath of Izu-Nagaoka's alkaline spring. The garden is the reason to come: almost every blogger writes about it, and main-building rooms face it, while new-wing rooms look onto their own small courtyards. Japanese guests rate it 4.46 across 45 reviews on one major site. The caveats come up again and again. The grounds are vast, so the walk from some rooms to the baths and dining room is long. Meals are the weakest score: some guests find portions small and the cooking safe rather than memorable, and one early-2025 stay went badly wrong on service. Some new-wing rooms feel dark and low-ceilinged and are waiting for renovation. Prices run from about ¥40,000 per person to around ¥150,000 for two in a main-building annex.

Guía para elegir habitación

Recomendadas

  • Main-building annexes Takasago and Kagetsu (本館離れ, 97.9㎡+), or the Miyuki suite

These are the rooms that face the 3,000-tsubo garden, which is what most guests come for. An Ikyu regular wrote in July 2026 that the impression depends heavily on which room you get, and favoured the garden-facing main building. A February 2025 guest paid close to ¥150,000 for two in a main-building annex with both meals. Miyuki (134.8㎡) is reached by its own 50m tatami corridor.

  • Fujiuraba dog-friendly annexes (藤裏葉, 76㎡+)

Two detached rooms converted in 2014 for guests with dogs. They have an onsen bath, a separate tub for the dog, a private dog-run garden and tiered boxed meals in the room. One 2026 reviewer called it among the best places in Japan to stay with a dog.

Mejor evitar

  • Unrenovated new-wing rooms, and the cheapest plans

New-wing rooms look onto small private courtyards rather than the main garden. One 2026 guest found the new wing dark and low-ceilinged at first, and another described the Hatsune suite as not yet renovated, with ceilings and fittings that needed repair. A 2024 blogger in the cheapest room found the bathroom fixtures dated, and their discount-coupon plan came with a small, meatless dinner. The inn has since been adding ReFa dryers and shower heads, new taps and Airweave futons.

The 'Jūniwari' bento: a twelve-compartment box with rice cooked in an individual pot

Book the free shuttle from Izu-Nagaoka Station in advance (station pick-ups every 30 minutes from 14:00 to 17:00, returns 10:00–11:30). The bar Kanogawa is in the relocated house of the statesman Gotō Shinpei, but its opening days vary, so ask at check-in. The minibar includes free small beers and juice.

Claves de la cena

4.0/5

Kaiseki is served in the dining room Yūhō, under a kirikane wall by Living National Treasure Eri Sayoko, from 17:30 to 19:30 with a 15% service charge; an in-room boxed kaiseki is also offered. A February 2026 blogger had duck jibu-ni soup, tuna, horse mackerel and scallop sashimi, cod milt baked in yuzu, Japanese beef fillet cutlet and crab rice, and another called both meals 'perfect'. Food is still the inn's lowest sub-score. 2025–26 reviewers asked for more memorable cooking and a better wine list (no wine by the glass), and found portions small. In February 2025 one guest had late meals, a cold breakfast and a billing mistake, and the inn apologised publicly.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

Izu-Nagaoka Onsen, an alkaline simple spring (pH 9.1). The official site describes every in-room bath as kakenagashi (free-flowing); for the public baths one major booking site lists them as not free-flowing and another says water is added and the spring is heated.

Privacidad y ambiente

Every room has its own onsen bath, so you can bathe at any hour. The public baths have one indoor and one open-air bath each for men and women: indoors 15:00–9:30, outdoors 15:00–midnight and 6:00–9:30. There is no private-hire bath. In July 2026 a routine test found Legionella above the legal limit in the women's indoor bath; it was closed from 22 July, cleaned and reopened on 31 July.

Política sobre tatuajes

Refused. The official onsen page says guests with tattoos may not use the public baths and will be asked to leave. Your in-room bath is the alternative.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

The building is spread out. Long walks from rooms to the baths and dining room are the most common complaint in 2024–2026 reviews, and the inn has steps throughout and no accessible toilet.

  2. 02

    Check-in 15:00, check-out 11:00. All rooms have been non-smoking since September 2024.

  3. 03

Children of elementary-school age and up pay the adult rate on most plans; children 7 and over must use the bath for their own sex.

  4. 04

The garden is for staying guests only, and there's no day-use bathing. There's little to eat nearby without a car.

  5. 05

Don't confuse it with Tosaryu Onsen Sanyoso in Kochi, which is a different inn.

The big Izu ocean-view ryokan once voted No. 1 for hospitality 15 years running: simmered kinmedai, an all-day free lounge and suites with their own spring-fed open-air baths — but unrenovated rooms, recurring corridor smells and a dated main bath drag it down
