Dogo Onsen Yamatoya Honten
道後温泉 大和屋本店
A sukiya-style inn with its own hinoki noh stage, sea-bream rice with every dinner and a 100-dish Setouchi breakfast, steps from Dogo's famous bathhouse — the baths themselves are recirculated, and it's a big, busy house
Yamatoya Honten was founded in 1868 as a four-room inn north of the Dogo Onsen Honkan and rebuilt in 1996 in sukiya style around a theme of Zeami's treatise on noh, with Dogo's only freestanding hinoki noh stage, Senjuden — guests can step onto it in white tabi and try on masks in the afternoon and evening. In September 2024 it and its sister inn Yamatoya Bessō were bought by a subsidiary of the Maruhan group. It's a 90-room house, a minute from the Honkan bathhouse. Japanese guests rate it 4.7 across 1,337 reviews on one major site (service at 4.8) and 4.61 across 2,326 on another. They praise the roomy 45㎡ standard Japanese rooms, the Iyo tai-meshi sea-bream rice served with every dinner, a breakfast buffet of about 100 dishes with a build-your-own seafood bowl and three kinds of mikan juice, and the free sake and sweets bar by the baths. Know before you book: the basement baths draw from Dogo's shared supply and the inn's own analysis shows them heated, recirculated and chlorinated — some notice the chlorine and find them small. Other complaints in 2025–2026: only two slow lifts for 90 rooms, no escort to rooms at busy times, an 'assembly-line' front desk, worn fittings, air conditioning that won't adjust and pricey drinks. Two-meal stays run about ¥27,000–30,000 per person.

Standard Japanese rooms (45㎡), ideally facing the noh stage
Ten tatami plus a wide window-side sitting area and an entrance 'more than twice as wide as other inns' — 'this is a standard room?!', a June 2026 guest wrote, and a family of five adults fit. Several 2026 reviewers recommend asking for a noh-stage view. Semi-suites (62㎡) and suites with a hinoki bath (78㎡) step up from there; one March 2026 couple paid over ¥55,000 for a semi-suite.
Deluxe Twin 501/502 and the singles, for solo travellers
The two 40㎡+ corner twins have double-size beds and a view over Dogo; a solo April 2026 traveller paid ¥29,310 with two meals after a discount. The 15㎡ singles with a massage chair suit solo stays — 'a business hotel plus a little', one 2025 guest put it.

Western rooms, and anyone sensitive to temperature or noise
Renovated Western twins are carpeted with no step to remove shoes, and in December 2025 the air conditioning wouldn't respond; a 2025 single was too cold even on the lowest setting. 2026 reviewers also mention small in-room baths, futons laid by the entrance, late-night neighbour noise, dim lighting and a broken toilet tank. It's not stated whether in-room baths use spring water.

La cocina a fondo
Consenso sobre el desayuno
4.4/5The 'Setouchi feast' buffet of about 100 dishes (7:00–10:00): a build-your-own bowl of salmon roe, sea bream, tuna and whitebait, jakoten and three mikan juices — widely praised, though seafood runs out and a repeat guest missed the old set breakfast
Visit the noh stage between 15:00 and 21:00 (white tabi are in your room) and ask whether there's a performance that night. The free sake and sweets bar by the baths opens 7:00–10:00 and 15:00–22:00. Parking costs ¥1,000 a day.
Claves de la cena
4.4/5Kaiseki in the fourth-floor Shōfū restaurant, which looks out on the noh stage, or in private rooms at Sakuragawa and Yūgao, always ending with Iyo tai-meshi (salt-grilled sea bream cooked into the rice) — the dish reviewers single out most. A 2026 menu included Ehime sea bream, tuna and amberjack sashimi, a Spanish-mackerel barley-miso hotpot and beef teppanyaki. Critics found it 'so-so', the steak self-cooked and oily, some creative Western touches divisive, and drinks over ¥1,000 a glass.
Onsen y bienestar: la realidad
Dogo's alkaline simple spring (pH 9.1) from the town's shared supply, the same as the Honkan bathhouse. The inn's posted analysis lists it as heated, recirculated and filtered, and chlorinated — not free-flowing.
Two basement baths, Ominameshi and Otokoeshi, built of hinoki and Iyo-Ōshima granite with small roofed outdoor tubs, swap between men and women overnight (5:00–9:30 and 15:00–24:00); the side used by women in the evening has more washing stations. No private baths. Guests praise the soft water and quiet (many head out to the public bathhouses) but some find the baths small, the women's side crowded at peak times, the outdoor tubs hard for older guests, and the chlorine noticeable.
