Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

Eighteen rooms, each with its own free-flowing open-air onsen, in a prize-winning earthen-walled building below Mount Tanigawa — a Relais & Châteaux favourite whose kitchen has lately lost some fans

Senjuan opened in 1997 as the more refined sister of Ryokan Tanigawa, and the building by architect Takao Habuka — an eight-metre curved glass corridor, local-clay walls, marbled ceilings and washi by Eriko Horiki — won an architectural-institute award. All 18 rooms have an open-air bath fed straight from the inn's own spring, with the temperature set by how much spring water flows in; staff will tune it to your request. It joined Relais & Châteaux in 2012 and holds one MICHELIN Key (2024 and 2025). Japanese guests rate it 4.58 across 138 reviews on Ikyu and 4.53 across 282 on Rakuten, with 4.4 on Jalan. Guests love the 22-hour stay (13:00 to 11:00), private dining rooms for every meal, free in-room drinks and an evening lounge. The concerns are recent: several 2024–2026 guests found dinner less memorable than before, and 2025–2026 reviews report maintenance slips (dust, broken taps, a lukewarm shared bath). Prices rose from May 2026 — the cheapest room with an early-booking discount is now about ¥117,800 for two with two meals, where a March 2025 guest paid ¥40,000 per person.

Recomendadas

  • Japanese room B (和室B, 12.5 mats) — e.g. Awayuki (淡雪) or Kōsetsu (光雪)

The cheapest type still has its own free-flowing open-air bath. A fifth-time guest paid ¥40,000 per person with two meals in March 2025 with a 60-day early discount, and liked Awayuki's high ceiling on the third floor; Kōsetsu has a bigger bath with a view of cherry trees. Two bloggers disagree on Awayuki's tub: roomy for two to one, full with two to the other.

  • Terrace rooms and the SP / S rooms (12.5 + 8 mats, SP with a tea room)

The terrace rooms face the Tanigawa ridge and the river. The SP room adds a stone-sauna room with an overhead shower, as a 2023 guest described. Note that SP, S, the terrace rooms and some Japanese A rooms have eight steps in front of the room.

Mejor evitar

  • The single Western twin room (1st floor) and rooms for guests with limited mobility

In snow, the twin's semi-open-air bath window wouldn't open (February 2025), and a February 2026 reviewer there reported sharp furniture corners, a lukewarm bath, a hard-to-read air-con dial and sticky doors. In a Japanese room B, a guest's mother using a cane couldn't reach the high shower controls (April 2026). A repeat guest felt the sauna newly added to some rooms slightly spoiled the view (summer 2026). No infants or primary-school children in the Western and Japanese-Western rooms.

Consenso sobre el desayuno

Japanese or Western, from 7:30 in 15-minute slots, in your private dining room: choose salmon, horse mackerel or ayu, and white rice, rice porridge or fermented brown rice — or bread from a local bakery with your own toaster

The fridge in your room is free, as are drinks in the lounge after dinner, the garden terrace in the afternoon and coffee in the reading room. Vegetarian and vegan meals need three days' notice.

Claves de la cena

4.2/5

Every meal is served in a private dining room. Dinner, starting at 17:30, 18:00 or 18:30, is a seasonal kaiseki built on Gunma produce: Jōshū Gin-hikari trout, Akagi chicken, Jōshū wagyu sirloin on a hot stone or Masuda beef you grill yourself, and chigirikko dumpling soup, with a konnyaku dish 'from the okami' for one spring 2024 guest. Opinions have cooled: a December 2024 repeat guest found nothing that stood out this time, and Ikyu reviewers in July and August 2026 were let down by a roast-beef main, wondered whether the head chef had changed, and one rated dinner 1 out of 5. A May 2025 guest also had a wrong drink and forgotten breakfast juice.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

A calcium-sodium sulfate-chloride spring (weakly alkaline, pH 8.04) from the inn's own sources, officially 100% free-flowing in every bath, though it may be heated in winter when the water cools. No mention of added water or recirculation was found. In-room baths are adjusted by changing the flow of spring water.

Privacidad y ambiente

The real luxury is the bath in your room. The shared baths, Ichi-no-kura (dry sauna with self-löyly) and Sen-no-kura (mist sauna), each with an outdoor bath, swap between men and women at dinner time and open 13:00–10:30, closing 19:00–20:00 for cleaning. A summer walking bath and a private sauna, 3u7 Mt.1977 (90 minutes, ¥11,000 per person, two slots a day, swimsuits required), round it out. There are no reservable private baths. A February 2026 guest found the shared bath at only about 37°C, and a November 2025 guest found its sauna out of order and the outdoor walk cold.

No policy found on the official site or Japanese booking sites — contact the inn. Every room has its own onsen bath, so you can avoid the shared baths entirely.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Prices rose for stays from 1 May 2026; in September 2026 the cheapest early-booking plan was about ¥117,800 for two with two meals, and larger rooms from about ¥128,800–131,000.

  2. 02

Check-in 13:00–18:00 and check-out 11:00. The free shuttle from JR Minakami station must be booked; it runs around check-out time. Free parking for 19 cars with EV chargers.

  3. 03

Maintenance complaints from 2025–2026: dust and a broken tap in a Japanese room B (November 2025), a door that wouldn't shut and a broken tap (February 2026), a dirty shuttle mat and smelly shower room (April 2026), and used tea leaves left in the pot (August 2026).

  4. 04

The building is not step-free: several room types have eight steps at the entrance. An April 2024 blogger travelling with a parent who uses a wheelchair chose a Japanese-Western room.

  5. 05

Children are allowed, but not infants or primary-school children in the Western and Japanese-Western rooms. A family with a three-year-old in summer 2024 got a kids' menu, a baby bath and a baby bed in the bathroom.
