Yamanaka Onsen Shirasagiyu Tawaraya

The last of Yamanaka's twelve founding inns: a riverside open-air bath on the Kakusenkei gorge and inventive Kaga kaiseki for a fair price — but the building is old, the water is recirculated, staff don't show you to your room, and insects find the in-room baths in late summer
Tawaraya traces its story to the Kamakura period, when — so the inn tells it — a local lord saw a white heron soaking an injured leg in Yamanaka's spring and had twelve retainers revive the spa. Tawaraya is the only one of those twelve founding inns still operating, and the rice bales stacked by the door recall the days when bathers paid in rice. Today it's a 43-room house built down the side of the Kakusenkei gorge, with the lobby on the fifth floor and the baths at river level. The draws are Kakusen, a big open-air bath right beside the rushing river, and Kaga kaiseki served on Yamanaka lacquer and Kutani porcelain. Japanese guests rate it 4.7 across 1,238 reviews on one major site (dinner and baths both 4.7) and 4.54 across 992 on another. Reviewers in 2025–2026 single out menus that explain each dish and its growers, creative touches such as a chilled pumpkin soup, rice cooked in a pot with spring water, the steamed Kaga-vegetable and nodoguro breakfast, free drinks in the lobby, and kind care for children, allergies and older parents. A blogger who came in winter 2026 for tagged Kano crab was moved by the raw crab sashimi. Since 2023 the inn has added suites with their own open-air spring bath, a sauna twin (October 2025) and a riverside sauna in the Kajika bath (November 2025). The catches: the building feels old, the cheapest old-wing rooms have no bath, nobody shows you to your room, a booking site lists the water as heated and recirculated, insects get into the in-room baths in late summer, and some 2026 reviewers found the portions small or the top menu underwhelming. Two-meal stays run about ¥17,000–41,000 per person.

Riverside (渓流眺望) Japanese rooms, 12.5 tatami
The value pick: a wide-windowed tatami room above the river, where you hear the water and see the lit-up gorge at night. An October 2026 guest paying about ¥21,000–22,000 per person called it 'very spacious and lovely', and September 2026 reviewers praised the newly renovated toilets. The barrier-free Japanese-Western rooms (10 tatami plus two semi-double beds, only three of them) also face the river, but have a shower booth instead of a bathtub.
Open-air spring bath suites (2023) and the sauna twin (October 2025)
Three river-view types: a suite with private sauna and cold plunge, a suite with its own dining room for in-room meals, and an 8.5-tatami Western twin with sauna (there are four steps up to the sauna rooms). Guests in these rooms use a private lounge with free drinks including canned beer. Families in August and October 2026 called the in-room dining suite huge and its open-air bath wide and restful. The 2022 mountain-side suite with a semi-open-air bath doesn't come with lounge access.

Old-wing mountain-side rooms (旧館, バスなし), and anyone sensitive to insects
The cheapest rooms are in the old wing and have no bath — you rely on the shared baths. Across the inn, reviewers say it feels dated: heavy doors and thin futons (June 2026), a cramped washbasin area (August 2026), dim corners. Being on the river brings insects: a large ant in a standard room (September 2026), a swarm in a suite's semi-open-air bath one morning (August 2026), and in September 2026 a grasshopper on one suite's bath door and dead insects in another suite's changing area.

La cocina a fondo
Consenso sobre el desayuno
4.5/5A Japanese set breakfast, 'Kagoiri Musume' (7:30–9:30): Kaga vegetables and nodoguro steamed with spring water in a bamboo steamer, rice cooked in a small pot with spring water, metta-jiru (pork-and-sweet-potato miso soup) and a hōjicha pudding — widely praised, though a July 2026 guest called it meagre and a guest on the top-tier plan in late 2026 found it too small
Book the free shuttle from Kaga-Onsen Station in advance (hourly 14:00–18:00; it won't wait for late trains), and tell the front desk by 20:00 which return bus you want (8:30, 9:45 or 10:45). Reserve the private open-air bath by phone as soon as you arrive — it's first come, first served. Booking on the official site saves ¥1,100 per adult and ¥1,100 on the private bath, and adds a ¥500 voucher. Drivers: the last stretch is through narrow lanes (October 2026).
Claves de la cena
4.6/5Kaga kaiseki in the fifth-floor lobby restaurant overlooking the gorge or the second-floor dining room (renovated 2019); in-room dinner only comes with the in-room dining suite. Menus range from the standard Four-Seasons Kaga kaiseki to Kikka kaiseki, a top-tier kaiseki (April–November) and a French-Japanese course. From November to March there are tagged Kano crab plans (half, one or one and a half crabs) and a seven-way crab course that uses non-branded snow crab. 2026 reviewers praise the menus explaining each dish and its producers, jibuni duck stew, Noto beef and inventive dishes; the winter 2026 blogger loved the raw crab sashimi, grilled and boiled crab and crab hotpot. Critics said portions are small for big eaters and teenagers, there's no fried food, a tomato hotpot missed, and the top-tier menu disappointed. Vegetarian substitutions are refused; ask about allergies at least two days ahead.
Onsen y bienestar: la realidad
Yamanaka Onsen's shared supply, a blend of the town's No. 3, 7, 8, 10 and 11 wells: a weakly alkaline simple spring (pH 8.4, 45.2°C at the source) rich in calcium sulphate, per the 2024 analysis the inn posts. The inn calls it 100% spring water and says it has the largest flow in Yamanaka (90 litres a minute), but one major booking site lists the baths as heated and recirculated with filtration — not free-flowing.
Two large baths at river level swap between men and women overnight. Kakusen has a riverside open-air bath for 30 plus an indoor bath (men 5:00–11:00, women 15:00–24:00). Kajika (women in the morning, men in the evening) added a Finnish sauna, cold plunge and semi-open-air bath in November 2025; you wear a bathing garment in that area because a footpath runs along the far bank. Reviewers love the soft, comfortably warm water, the sound of the river and the free ice lollies in the changing room, but say the two sides differ a lot in size. The private open-air bath, Kikka, faces the gorge (45 minutes, ¥3,300, 6:00–11:00 and 15:00–24:00).
No policy found on the official site or Japanese booking sites — contact the inn. The suites have their own open-air spring bath, and the private bath can be reserved.

It's an old building beside a river: expect dated corners and, in summer and early autumn, insects — especially in rooms with their own open-air bath.
