A big bayside onsen inn that was one of the first back in quake-hit Wakura — wide sea views from tatami rooms and large salt-spring baths, but buffet dinners, some facilities still closed and service that feels more hotel than ryokan
Notoraku is a large inn founded in 1974, with 114 rooms in its main tower (96 of them tatami rooms), linked by corridors to two annex hotels, Hotel Noto Club and Garden Notoya. The 1 January 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake caused serious damage, and the inn stayed closed for about ten months. It reopened on 1 November 2024, while much of Wakura stayed shut. In 2026 the area's own inn list still shows Kagaya and several others closed. Most evidence here comes from booking reviews written since reopening. Japanese guests rate it 4.6 across 761 reviews on one major site (baths 4.7) and 4.24 across 580 on another. Blogs from 2025–2026 add detail. Reviewers keep praising the same things: Nanao Bay and the Notojima Bridge seen from the rooms, the lobby and the baths, a large main bathhouse with a reclining bath and open-air tubs, and roomy 10-tatami rooms. Many also say they came to support the recovery. The complaints are just as steady. Dinner on most plans is a buffet. Some find it varied, with crab, sashimi and make-your-own seafood bowls, but others call it plain and short on local food. One 2026 blogger scored the whole stay 63/100 and called breakfast business-hotel level. The 15th-floor private open-air baths and the onsen terrace rooms are still closed for quake repairs. Most guests find the front-line staff polite, but there are no kimono-clad room attendants. Expect thin walls, crowds from tour groups and some worn furniture. Two-meal stays in a bay-view tatami room run about ¥16,000–28,000 per person.

Main-building bay-view tatami rooms (10 tatami and up) — the 'Nanao Bay view Japanese room' plan
This is what most reviewers booked, at about ¥16,000–28,000 per person with two meals in 2025–2026. A May 2026 guest said all rooms face the sea. A group of three found their room 'too big for three', with morning mist lifting off the bay toward the Notojima Bridge. A December 2025 blogger's 7th-floor room had tatami plus a separate bedroom. An August 2026 guest on the 5th floor liked the two washbasins and the window bath looking out to Notojima.
Upper-floor special rooms with a private open-air bath, or the 14th-floor 'premium floor' Western rooms
A guest upgraded in April 2026 to a top-floor corner suite facing the Notojima Bridge. They described a balcony with sofas, a private open-air bath and a glass-walled shower, and barely used the shared baths. The inn has 10 rooms with private open-air baths in three layouts, plus a 14th-floor room with a bay-view bath and terrace. Note that the inn says these private baths and the terrace Jacuzzis are not onsen water. Ask by phone about premium-floor availability.

Garden Notoya annex singles and the bathless 'wakeari' rooms; onsen terrace rooms
Garden Notoya is an oriental-style annex with Western rooms and unit baths. A December 2025 guest called it 'like an onsen business hotel', one July 2026 room looked onto the convenience store roof, and an October 2026 reviewer found dust and rubbish under the bed. They are cheap (about ¥7,000–9,000 per person, room only or with breakfast) and still use the main baths. The onsen terrace rooms (hinoki tubs with real spring water) remain closed for quake repairs. In the main tower, 2026 guests heard toilets flushing in the next room and children running upstairs, and one complained of weak air-conditioning.

3.7/5A Japanese-Western buffet of about 50 dishes in the Noto'S KITCHEN Maisen restaurant in Garden Notoya, with many small Japanese side dishes, Kanazawa curry and grilled fish
Tour groups fill the restaurant at 7:00. A July 2026 blogger found a long queue at opening that cleared after 7:00; an April 2026 guest walked straight in just before 8:00. Rice is served by staff into your bowl. Free coffee and soft drinks are poured in the bay-view lobby lounge from 15:00 to 22:00 and from 7:00 to 10:00.

3.6/5On most plans dinner is a buffet in the same restaurant: an open kitchen with steak and tempura, crab, sashimi, Noto beef, local shellfish and a make-your-own seafood bowl with ikura. Opinions split sharply. Many 2026 reviewers loved the variety and the seafood bowls. Others found it 'cheap-looking' for the price (August 2026), light on Noto dishes and full of frozen catering-style seafood, with beef that tasted like reformed meat (August 2026). A July 2026 blogger rated dinner 12/20. A May 2026 guest travelling with a 90-year-old mother felt a buffet was hard on older guests and ended up carrying both plates. A seated kaiseki in the Yoimachi restaurant (sunken-hearth tatami or table seats) comes with some plans: guests in November–December 2025 praised Noto beef, Nakajima greens and local sake, and crab, nodoguro and fugu plans are offered in winter. Confirm which dinner your plan includes; one 2025 crab-plan guest found the crab legs disappointing.
Onsen y bienestar: la realidad
Wakura's shared sodium-calcium chloride spring (strongly saline, weakly alkaline, about 80°C at the source), piped to all the inns from a single supplier. Japanese booking data lists Notoraku's baths as having water added, heated and recirculated with filtering — not free-flowing. The water is salty and keeps you warm, but guests in December 2025 and May 2026 noticed a chlorine smell.
The main baths are on the 1st floor (men, Norari-yu) and 2nd floor (women, Kurari-yu): large indoor pools, a hinoki semi-open-air tub facing the bay, a reclining bath, jar tubs, a herb bath, a dry sauna and a cold plunge, open 5:00–24:00. Bloggers and reviewers love the reclining bath and the bay views, but say every tub runs hot. A June 2026 guest found the hinoki tub and a jar tub left unfilled, and the mist sauna was closed in July 2026. A smaller bath on the 7th floor of Garden Notoya, with a semi-open-air tub and sauna, is often empty, but a 2026 blogger found no salt taste and strong chlorine and suspected it isn't onsen water. The three private 15th-floor open-air baths are still closed for quake repairs. In-room open-air baths and Jacuzzis are not onsen water. Busy dates bring school and tour groups; a 2023 visitor (before the quake) had a shared bath taken over by rowdy high-school students.

Quake recovery is still under way. Repairs continue in parts of the main building, and the 15th-floor private baths and onsen terrace rooms are closed. Wakura's 2026 fireworks were cancelled, and many neighbouring inns are closed or being demolished. Reviews from before January 2024 describe a different inn.
- 02
Check-in 15:00 (to 19:00), check-out 10:00. The inn is closed for maintenance from 20 to 24 December 2026.
- 03
A free shuttle runs from JR Wakura Onsen Station (about 5 minutes; phone ahead). Tokyo is about 3.5 hours away by Hokuriku Shinkansen plus a limited express, Osaka about 3.5 hours. Free parking is across the road, so unload at the entrance first.
- 04
The building is non-smoking except for designated smoking rooms. One 2026 guest found a large smoking room right by the lift on the women's bath floor, with smoke escaping.
- 05
It suits families: there is a kids' area, a summer garden pool (18 July–31 August in 2026, adults must supervise) and a Pokémon footbath a few minutes' walk away. Weekend massage is available. Expect banquet halls, karaoke and tour groups rather than a quiet ryokan.
