The big inn beside Nozawa's Ōyu bathhouse, with its own sulphur spring rising in the garden and running unwatered through a shrine-carpenter bathhouse of hot, warm and lie-down tubs. The catches: plain cheaper rooms, weak summer air-conditioning and strict winter booking rules
Sakaya has been run by the same family for 18 generations and stands right next to the Ōyu, the public bathhouse at the heart of Nozawa Onsen. With 29 rooms on a six-storey building it is one of the village's larger inns, and the draw is its own spring: a simple sulphur source of about 68°C that rises naturally in the garden and is cooled without adding water. In the dim bathhouse, built by shrine carpenters, it overflows from a very hot tub into a hot one and then a shallow lie-down tub (roughly 44°C, 42°C and 39°C on a July 2024 visit), so even people wary of Nozawa's scalding public baths can soak. Each side also has a small outdoor tub with a sauna and spring-water plunge, and there is a free bookable family bath. Japanese guests rate it 4.6 across 691 reviews on one major site (baths 4.8, rooms only 4.2), 4.55 across 386 on another, and 4.57 across 20 on a third, where baths score 4.95. Bloggers who stayed between New Year 2022–23 and 2025, and reviewers through October 2026, praise the black and white mineral flakes, the drinkable spring, private dining rooms, river-fish sashimi, meat steamed over spring water and rice good enough for seconds. The complaints: cheaper rooms that feel plain, small or dated for the price, weak in-room showers, stink bugs in autumn, air conditioning that struggled on hot days in 2025 and 2026, no handrails for guests with limited mobility, a small outdoor tub with no view, and one cold, unescorted check-in in 2025. Two meals usually cost about ¥21,000–30,000 per person. In winter, rooms are sold with breakfast only, and the official site takes winter bookings only for three nights or more.

Rooms with an antechamber (次の間付, 45–54㎡) or the standard 10-tatami rooms (35–40㎡)
The larger rooms have a 12.5-tatami main room plus an antechamber and a sunken kotatsu, or 10 tatami with twin beds. A family who has skied from Sakaya for about ten years (posted February 2025) books this type for its two washbasins, the towel warmer that dries ski gloves, and in-room Nespresso. A July 2024 blogger found the standard 10-tatami room with a window-side sitting area roomy enough, with drinkable tap water, chilled spring water in the fridge and two sizes of yukata. All rooms are on the third floor or above and have their own shower and toilet; the onsen is in the shared baths.
Sakaya Hanare JONNOBI, for families and groups
Seven 100㎡ three-bedroom condominium units (up to 8 people with the loft) with a full kitchen and washer-dryer, a 1–2 minute walk outside past the Ōyu. They opened in 2009 as a sister inn and were later converted. A September 2026 guest found the unit far larger than needed, and an August 2026 guest didn't mind the outdoor walk in summer but thought it would be a chore in snow. There is no onsen in the units: use the main building's baths, the family bath or the swimsuit open-air spa Kame-no-yu on site. Units cost ¥50,000–70,000 in summer and ¥100,000–120,000 in winter per night plus tax, and winter stays must fit the inn's designated periods.

Compact rooms and Japanese-style twins (28–32㎡), and anyone sensitive to heat
A ski-trip blogger (posted November 2023) found the washroom and toilet in the smallest twin dated and cramped, and a November 2025 guest in the cheapest room called it ordinary and a bit small for the price, with plenty of stink bugs. In 2026 guests also mentioned weak in-room showers, a Japanese-Western room with a big step that was hard to use, and tea for only two people in a room for three. On hot days the air conditioning struggled (August 2025), and an October 2026 guest had to borrow a fan.

Consenso sobre el desayuno
4.4/5A Japanese breakfast in your private dining room at 8:00 or 8:30, with river-fish himono, an onsen egg, nozawana pickles and a choice (made the night before) of white rice, barley rice with grated yam, or porridge cooked in spring water. Mostly praised, though a September 2026 guest found the porridge gluey and two October 2026 reviewers scored breakfast only 3 out of 5
Ask at check-in to book the free family bath Matsu-no-yu (45 minutes, 15:00–21:00 in 2024). A 2022–23 New Year blogger was only told about it after asking. A free village walk leaves from the front desk at 16:30 (October 2026). On Sundays a morning market runs 6:30–7:30 (2024), and you can take coffee back to your room after breakfast. Drivers: until early December 2026, follow the inn's detour via the ski area rather than your sat-nav (see below).
Claves de la cena
4.5/5Creative Shinshu kaiseki in a private dining room at 18:00 or 18:45 (2024). Expect vegetables boiled in the spring with an onsen-egg and sea-urchin dip, smoked Shinshu salmon, river-fish sashimi (iwana, carp arai, yukimasu), and local pork, Shinshu beef or shamo chicken cooked 'gensen-yaki' on a grill set over simmering spring water, with a container of rice for refills. Shinshu Premium beef shabu-shabu or sukiyaki cost extra, and the local sake list includes Mizuo. In 2026 reviewers praised the menu for serving river fish rather than sea fish this far inland, and one ranked the dinner among the best of many inns. But a November 2025 guest found it pretty but not tasty, an August 2026 guest disliked the sweetfish's special sauce, and a 2022–23 New Year blogger found the gaps between courses long at a busy time. In winter, dinner is an add-on (kaiseki ¥8,800, shabu-shabu ¥12,100, children ¥3,300) and isn't served on several Wednesdays in January–March. For children, one August 2026 family received a kids' meal in an ox-cart-shaped box, but an October 2026 family couldn't choose one with their plan.
Onsen y bienestar: la realidad
The inn's own source, a simple sulphur spring (weakly alkaline, about 68°C, 42 litres a minute per the analysis a July 2024 blogger photographed) that rises naturally in the garden. The inn says it is cooled without adding water. It is poured into the hottest tub and overflows into the cooler ones, free-flowing, and you can drink it from the spout of the hottest tub.
Two fixed single-sex bathhouses, Taka-no-yu (men) and Tsuki-no-yu (women), each with a very hot tub, a hot tub and a shallow lie-down tub under a tall steam-venting roof, plus a small outdoor tub, Tsukimi-no-tani, with a sauna (until 22:00) and a plunge pool of spring water. The baths stayed open overnight (15:00–10:30 in 2024), and guests in 2025–26 bathed at 5 a.m. The outdoor tub gets only a trickle of source water, so it is cooler: welcome in summer, but lukewarm on a winter morning, and it has no view. In August 2026 a group chatting on its edge kept one guest out at night. Washing stations are few for the number of rooms. The free family bath Matsu-no-yu has two showers and is thick with black mineral flakes; it is too hot until you add cold water from the bamboo spout. Kame-no-yu, a mixed open-air spa at the Hanare, requires swimsuits or bathing wraps (rentals available). The Ōyu public bath is next door.
No policy found on the official site or Japanese booking sites — contact the inn. The free family bath avoids sharing.
Advertencias y matices locales
- 01
Check-in 15:00, check-out 11:00; free parking for 30 cars. From JR Iiyama Station, take the Nozawa Onsen Liner bus (25 minutes) to the terminus and walk 3 minutes.
- 02
Winter 2026–27: the official site opened bookings on 12 May 2026 for stays of three nights or more only, paid online, with 20% cancellation charged from 50 days before and 100% from 14 days before. Rates are per person with breakfast, and some dates are blocked by regulars and group buyouts. The Yu-road walkway to the slopes may stop running late in the season, which left one spring skier walking uphill to the gondola.
- 03
Road works: Ōyu-dōri, the usual approach, is closed to traffic from 18 August to early December 2026, apart from a few holiday breaks. The inn asks drivers to come via the Nagasaka gondola area. Sat-navs usually choose a lane too narrow to pass. A guest in October 2025 was given wrong directions by phone during earlier works.
- 04
Not barrier-free: an October 2026 guest recovering from a fracture found no handrails in the toilet or the large baths and could use only the family bath. Lanes around the inn are narrow and steep, and the street out front froze in heavy snow over New Year 2022–23.
- 05
Scam warning: in August 2026 the inn reported fake emails using its name to request payment by PayPay. The inn never asks for PayPay payment by email; delete such messages and contact the inn directly.
