Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

The ryokan that topped Japan's professional cuisine ranking for 40 straight years — miso-grilled abalone, Kagoshima black pork and a devoted room attendant — though the streak ended in 2024, and the baths and building lag behind the food

Shusuien began in 1963 when a shochu-brewing family turned their villa into an eight-room inn, and from 1985 it was voted first for cuisine in the travel industry's annual 'professionals' choice' ranking of Japanese inns for 40 consecutive years — a run that ended when Gero's Suimeikan took the top spot in the December 2024 and 2025 editions. Food is still the reason to come: every kaiseki includes miso-grilled abalone, satsuma-jiru and tender Kagoshima black pork simmered with soybeans and kelp, and the kitchen asks about dislikes and allergies at booking and again on arrival, tracking them on 'yellow cards'. Meals are served in your room or a private dining room, and an attendant looks after you throughout — service scores 4.8 on one major site. Japanese guests rate it 4.69 across 540 reviews on another and 4.5 across 641 on the first. The weak spots are consistent: the sodium chloride baths (free-flowing with water added) are the lowest-rated part — small, with a walled-in open-air bath and sometimes lukewarm water — there's no sand bath on site (the public Saraku is a short walk), the building and some rooms feel very 'Shōwa', and a few recent reviewers felt the cooking no longer matched its reputation, with underdone vegetables, cold fried dishes or heavy seasoning. Rates start from about ¥26,400 for a 10-mat room.

Guía para elegir habitación

Recomendadas

  • Fifth-floor special rooms and Japanese-Western rooms (Tsurumaru, Shimazu)

The modern Tsurumaru room (renovated in 2022, from ¥67,100) and Shimazu, with a balcony view of Chiringashima and the Ōsumi Peninsula, plus the bed-equipped special rooms in the Ibusuki wing — 'everything at the highest level… even the fridge drinks were free', a December 2025 guest wrote. Rooms throughout are generous: guests call the 12.5-mat rooms 'almost too big for two'.

  • Two-room Japanese suites (Reimei wing upper floors, or the garden side)

Good for groups and families, from about ¥31,900–34,100; the 20-mat garden-side suites are close to the lobby and the large bath.

Mejor evitar

  • Reimei-wing Japanese-Western rooms and older standard rooms

A November 2025 guest found the Reimei room was just beds placed in a tatami room, with many steps that were hard with a suitcase; others found sea views blocked, a 'Shōwa' feel, and odd bathrooms with an old squat toilet beside a newer Western one. The garden-facing Shusui room is wooden and, the inn itself says, cold in winter. Nothing indicates the in-room baths use spring water.

La cocina a fondo

Consenso sobre el desayuno

4.5/5

A Japanese breakfast in your room or private dining room with 'more dishes than you can finish' and excellent rice and Chiran tea

Mention every dislike and allergy when booking — the kitchen is famous for substitutions. For the sand bath, walk to the public Saraku (adults ¥1,500); some plans include tickets and a towel set, and the inn runs guests back by bus in the rain. The garden sand foot bath is free on sunny days.

Claves de la cena

4.5/5

Served in your room or in the Shimazu-han and Shikisai private dining rooms (18:00–21:00). Every course includes the miso-grilled abalone that brings many repeat guests, satsuma-jiru and Kagoshima black pork simmered with soybeans and Rishiri kelp, plus a winter persimmon stuffed with oysters; the premium Takumi course adds foie gras and shark fin. Guests rave about the black pork and the allergy care. Critics: a 2023 couple paying ¥68,200 found taro and aubergine undercooked, fried dishes cold and too much food; a November 2025 guest felt it was only 'a little better than ordinary kaiseki'; a May 2026 reviewer wondered whether the chef had changed; others found it salty.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

A sodium chloride spring; the inn describes its large and open-air baths as free-flowing, and one booking site lists water as added.

Privacidad y ambiente

A basement large bath with a small, walled-in open-air bath (only sky visible) and a sauna, open 14:00–23:30 and 6:00–10:00, plus two private semi-open-air baths, Hinoki and Midori, with their own lounge (¥3,500 per hour, book on arrival). There's no sand bath on site. The baths are the lowest-scored category on every site: guests call the open-air bath 'like a narrow alley', the indoor bath lukewarm in the evening, and 23:30 closing early.
