Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

Dorogawa's oldest inn, a 500-year-old pilgrims' lodge taking just six groups a night, with famous ayu, spring-water tofu and boar hotpot cooked by the okami — but the baths are small and recirculated, and the cheaper rooms share toilets

Hanaya Tokubei says it is the oldest inn in Dorogawa Onsen, founded some 500 years ago to lodge ascetic pilgrims climbing Mount Ōmine, and it's now run by the 17th generation. Renovated into a small, polished inn, it takes only about six groups a night, turns away day bathers and school groups, and has a wood-stove jazz lounge with vintage JBL and McIntosh gear. Japanese guests rate it 4.8 across 641 reviews on one major site and 4.69 across 357 on another, and they come back for the food, served in your room or a private room: salt-grilled ayu that one September 2026 guest called the best they'd ever eaten, tofu made with Dorogawa's spring water, botan-nabe of local hunter-branded Ōmine boar in winter and Japanese beef grilled on magnolia leaf. The weak point is bathing. The inn's own analysis describes a low-temperature (29°C) simple spring that is heated and recirculated, not free-flowing; the two baths hold about four people each and have no true outdoor bath, and baths are the lowest-scored category everywhere. The two newer Tenkū rooms have their own onsen bath and deck but are up several flights of stairs; the cheaper old-style rooms share toilets and have thin walls and no fridge. Weekends from May to September are pilgrim season and livelier. Two-meal stays start at about ¥17,200 per person.

Recomendadas

  • Tenkū-no-ma (天空の間, 12 mats) — West and East

The only rooms with their own onsen bath (semi-open-air) and a deck, plus a private toilet and washbasin — 'the room bath had good water and I used it again and again' (June 2026). They're reached by stairs only (several 2025–2026 guests found it hard on older legs), and East Tenkū looks only onto the courtyard (August 2026). A June 2026 guest found the filter cover off and debris in the room bath.

  • Omote-no-ma (表の間), the old-style room facing the street

An 8-mat room that looks onto Dorogawa's lantern-lit main street, praised in 2024–2026 reviews; one blogger advises booking a street-facing room early. Rakuten-no-ma (12 mats) in the new wing has its own toilet and a deck onto a small garden.

Mejor evitar

  • Old-style rooms (Omote, Oku, Naka) and Kado-no-ma

No toilet or washbasin in the room — the most common reservation, though the shared ones are new and clean (2026). Guests from 2024 to 2026 heard neighbours through thin walls, and there's no in-room fridge. Oku-no-ma's window view is weak (2025), and a February 2026 guest moved to a larger room found a large leak stain on the ceiling.

La cocina a fondo

Consenso sobre el desayuno

4.5/5

Rice from a wooden ohitsu, an onsen egg, dried ayu, yudōfu and ganmodoki, with coffee or juice afterwards — the inn will pack a bento for early starts

Most of Dorogawa's eateries close by 18:00, so take dinner at the inn. Book the private bath Zekū-no-yu (50 minutes, ¥2,500) on arrival. Without a car, call for a pickup from the Dorogawa Onsen bus stop — buses run only twice a day each way from December to April. The new lunch restaurant Gokiraku (from April 2023, reservation only) serves kaiseki and boar hotpot.

Claves de la cena

4.7/5

Served in your room or a private dining room (usually on the second floor, with table seating), and the menu changes on consecutive nights. Choose the Tokubei kaiseki, a yudōfu kaiseki, botan-nabe (boar) or duck hotpot. Guests from 2023 to 2026 single out salt-grilled and sashimi ayu, the spring-water tofu, the boar ('no gamey smell'), duck hotpot and magnolia-leaf beef; one 2026 guest said the okami cooks and the food could pass for a ryōtei. Portions are generous. Criticisms: the tofu-only kaiseki is light, rice was sticky (2023), and one guest disliked yudōfu made with soy milk (2025). A few guests found dish explanations hard to follow, though many praise the same staff.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

A low-temperature simple spring (29°C, pH 8.3, weakly alkaline). The inn's own bath page lists it as heated and recirculated-filtered — not free-flowing.

Privacidad y ambiente

Two small baths, the indoor Zenki-no-yu (renovated 2017) and the semi-open-air Goki-no-yu with a garden view, open 24 hours and swapping between men and women; each holds about four people, one has no window, and there's no true outdoor bath. A garden-view private bath, Zekū-no-yu, costs ¥2,500 for 50 minutes. With so few rooms the baths are usually empty, and guests find the water smooth — but baths are the lowest-rated category on every site, and one 2024 guest wrote 'you can't enjoy the onsen here'.
