Buying anime figures in Japan: online orders, pre-orders, packing and tax-free rules

How to order figures and collectibles from Amazon.co.jp or Rakuten during a Japan trip and collect them at your hotel, ryokan or a convenience store, what pre-order delays mean for a fixed itinerary, how makers say to spot bootlegs, how to get boxes home intact, and the tax-free changes of 1 November 2026.

Actualizado el 16 oct 2026

Ordering figures and collectibles online while you travel in Japan lets you reserve items before you arrive and have them waiting at your hotel, your ryokan or a convenience store, instead of carrying shopping bags from town to town. For how delivery to hotels, inns and convenience stores works in general, see our guide to delivery to your ryokan.

This guide covers what is specific to figures: pickup size limits for large boxes, pre-orders whose release date can slip past your stay, what manufacturers say about bootlegs, getting fragile boxes home on a plane, sending a big box ahead from your inn, and Japan's tax-free system, which changed on 1 November 2026. Every rule here comes from the official pages listed at the end; the shopping links are general product categories, not recommendations of particular products.

Buying online suits a trip because you can order before you land or between stops and let the parcel wait for you. Buying in a shop lets you see the box before you pay, and the tax-free scheme (see the last section) works through registered tax-free shops, where you show your passport at the point of sale.

Amazon.co.jp can deliver to FamilyMart, Lawson and Ministop counters and to Yamato Transport offices, but only for items shipped by Amazon.co.jp that cost less than ¥300,000, measure no more than 80 cm in total (length + width + height) and weigh no more than 10 kg, and only without a delivery date-and-time slot. A large boxed figure in an outer carton can exceed that, so check the size before choosing a pickup point. Parcels are held for four days at convenience-store counters (three at a FamilyMart FamiLocker) and seven days at a Yamato office, where you need ID that matches the name given when ordering; Amazon asks you to enter the recipient's full name exactly as it appears on your ID.

On Rakuten Ichiba, convenience-store pickup depends on the shop and the item: it appears at checkout only if it is offered, and the shop decides which chains you can use. Parcels over 100 cm in total or 10 kg, and orders with a set delivery date or time slot, can't go to a convenience store; the pickup point generally can't be changed after you order, and an uncollected parcel is generally sent back to the shop.

At remote inns a convenience store may not be practical. Our reports note that the nearest shop is about 20 minutes on foot from Okamotoya in Beppu's Myoban hamlet, the nearest convenience store about 30 minutes by car from Yumoto Choza in Okuhida, and about 35 minutes by car from Yachi Onsen in the Hakkōda mountains. Have figures sent to a store or hotel in a town on your route, or ask the inn in advance whether it will accept a parcel for you.

Pre-orders and release dates on a trip timetable

Amazon.co.jp takes pre-orders (yoyaku) for figures and other items that are not yet released, but it does not promise release-day delivery unless the product page says so, and if you choose to have your items shipped together, the whole order waits for the latest delivery date. If you need a pre-order before you leave, order it on its own.

Release dates move. Amazon notes that a manufacturer may postpone a release, which also moves the cancellation deadline, and that the new date is sent by email. Many pre-orders show a cancellation deadline on the product page; after it you can't cancel from your account, and some items can't be cancelled at all once the order is confirmed. If the postponement email arrives after the new deadline, Amazon says customer service will accept a cancellation within eight days of that email. Before you have a pre-order sent to your ryokan, make sure the release falls well inside your stay, and decide what you will do if it slips.

Amazon's pre-order price guarantee applies only to items sold and shipped by Amazon.co.jp whose product page says they are covered: you pay the lowest price shown on the site between ordering and the start of shipping preparation, or the release date if that comes first. Limited and first-run editions are marked (初回)限定版 on the product page; anything without that label is the standard edition, and Amazon may limit how many each customer can order.

Pickup points add their own limits: items with release-day delivery can't be sent to an Amazon locker or counter, and if the pickup point you chose becomes unavailable before release, the pre-order may be cancelled.

Spotting genuine figures

Manufacturers warn that bootleg figures circulate online. Good Smile Company's bootleg notice says copies of its figures have been sold on online auction and marketplace sites, that many carry the official logos of the company or its partners without permission, and that it can't offer support for bootlegs. In its side-by-side example the differences are in the paint: an overly dark blush, the wrong colour on clothing, unpainted inner surfaces. It stresses that this is only one example and that buyers should watch for anything suspicious.

Some makers now add authentication marks. MegaHouse announced that from September 2025 it would put an authenticity sticker on some figures aimed at older collectors; it uses a hologram whose text or pattern appears only under a strong point light such as a smartphone torch.

On Amazon.co.jp, check who sells and who ships an item. The pre-order price guarantee covers only items sold and shipped by Amazon.co.jp, convenience-store pickup only items shipped by Amazon.co.jp, and marketplace sellers who ship their own items set their own shipping times.

Packing figures to fly home

The cabin is the safest place for a fragile box, but space is tight. On ANA international flights, for example, you may bring one carry-on bag no larger than 55 × 40 × 25 cm and 115 cm in total (wheels and handles included) plus one personal item within 40 × 30 × 20 cm, weighing no more than 10 kg together, and even a bag within the limits can be moved to the hold if cabin space runs out. Other airlines set their own limits, and on a codeshare flight the operating airline's rules may apply.

In economy, ANA's free checked allowance is up to 23 kg per piece with total dimensions of no more than 158 cm; how many pieces are free depends on the fare. ANA asks passengers to pack checked bags adequately themselves, and its damage policy excludes damage caused by improper packing or resulting from the fragile nature of an item. Damage has to be reported in writing within seven days of arrival.

In practice that means padding the box on every side, packing it in the middle of a hard suitcase surrounded by soft clothing, and keeping the most delicate pieces with you in the cabin.

Ryokan stays: send the big box ahead

A large boxed figure is awkward on rural buses and inn shuttles; Yachi Onsen's free shuttle from Aomori, for example, takes one suitcase per person. Japan's luggage-forwarding services let you send it on instead.

Yamato Transport (TA-Q-BIN) will deliver to a hotel or ryokan that agrees to accept the parcel. Send it before the cut-off time at least two days before check-in (three for longer distances), and check with the inn where and when you can collect it.

For the flight home, Yamato's Airport TA-Q-BIN asks you to drop bags off about two days before departure (three in some areas) so they reach the airport the day before; you collect them at the airport counter on the day you fly. Parcels over 30 kg aren't accepted, the airport rates include a ¥660 airport fee, and some convenience stores can't send parcels larger than Size 180. Yamato says sending from a hotel to Narita or Haneda depends on whether the front desk works with Yamato; if it doesn't, you can take the parcel to a convenience store or a Yamato office. Some inns arrange this at checkout: Kanazawa Yuwaku Onsen Hyakurakuso lets you send luggage to Kanazawa Station when you leave and go sightseeing hands-free.

If a box won't fit in your luggage at all, Japan Post's EMS sends documents and goods of up to 30 kg to more than 120 countries and territories, with tracking and a compensation system; check the country list and size limits before you pack. Don't post home anything you bought under the tax-free scheme (see below).

Tax-free shopping and customs back home

Japan's tax-free system changed on 1 November 2026. For purchases up to 31 October 2026, eligible visitors paid no consumption tax at the till of a tax-free shop. For purchases from 1 November, you pay the tax-inclusive price and the tax is refunded after customs confirms at departure that you are taking the goods out of Japan. You still show your passport when you buy.

Under the new system, purchases of ¥5,000 or more (excluding tax) per store per day qualify, limited to what you can personally carry out of Japan. Within 90 days of purchase, present your passport at a tax-free terminal in the international departure lobby before you check in your bags. You must have every tax-free item with you: the procedure can't be done after check-in, a checked bag can't be retrieved for it, and if a single item on a receipt is missing, nothing on that receipt is refunded. A green result ends the procedure; a red one means showing the goods at a customs inspection area. At Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Chubu, Fukuoka, New Chitose and Naha you can also do the first step online through Visit Japan Web. Refunds are paid by the shop or its refund provider.

For figures, that means keeping tax-free purchases in your hand luggage or in a bag you check in only after the terminal, picking up any forwarded luggage that contains them before you go to the terminal, and arriving early: neither the airline nor Customs compensates you if the procedure makes you miss your flight.

Your home country's customs allowance is a separate matter. The UK, for example, says its personal allowances apply to goods bought overseas wherever you bought them, including duty-free and tax-free shops, and that going over an allowance means paying tax and duty on all the goods in that category. Check your own country's allowance before you fill a suitcase with figures.
