Không phải ryokan đáng nhớ nào cũng cổ kính. Những nhà nghỉ này được du khách khen ngợi nhờ kiến trúc hoặc nội thất đương đại — từ những ngôi nhà nông thôn được di dời và một kho gạo bằng đá được hồi sinh đến các phòng do kiến trúc sư nổi tiếng thiết kế.
Các ryokan chú trọng thiết kế thường nhỏ, đặt trọng tâm vào chính căn phòng. Đôi khi người đánh giá thấy thiết kế ấn tượng lại kém tiện dụng: cầu thang dốc trong phòng hai tầng, tường kính ít riêng tư hoặc phòng tắm lạnh vào mùa đông.
