Tawaraya Ryokan

Kyoto's oldest standing inn, bookable online only since 2026: 18 one-of-a-kind sukiya rooms, nearly everything down to the soap designed in-house, and koyamaki-wood tubs instead of a hot spring — from about ¥164,000 a night for two
Tawaraya has stood on Fuyacho-dori since the Hōei era (1704–11), when a textile merchant from Hamada in Iwami began lodging travellers from home; the inn calls itself Kyoto's oldest standing ryokan, and it faces Hiiragiya across the same narrow street. For three centuries it had no website — bookings went by phone or through JTB — until 20 January 2026, when it launched an official site with online booking. Its 18 sukiya-style rooms, no two alike, open onto or overlook gardens. Almost everything you touch — soap, towels, bedding, pyjamas — is made for the inn and sold at its Gallery Yukei round the corner. That obsessive design is the draw. Bloggers who stayed between 2024 and 2026 describe hidden TVs and air conditioners, heated tatami, a library and the 'Ernest Study', warabi-mochi on arrival and a room they didn't want to leave; a repeat guest on a tenth stay in October 2024 was invited to tea in the tearoom. On JTB's guest survey it scores 90 out of 100 (dinner 94, service 92) across more than 20 comments from 2024–2026, which call the attendants knowledgeable and never pushy. Dinner is a gentle, seasonal Kyoto kaiseki served course by course in your room. Know what it isn't: there is no hot spring — each room has a compact koyamaki-wood tub that guests say stays warm into the night. Complaints are rare but real: a February 2025 reviewer said an attendant talked too much and mentioned a previous stay in front of a companion, a March 2026 reviewer found it 'a little too calculated', and the old house has slippery polished stairs and creaking ceilings. Rates run about ¥164,000–357,000 a night for two with dinner and breakfast, tax and service included, plus Kyoto's accommodation tax.

Những gì du khách từng ở đây thực sự khuyênNên chọn
Taka (鷹) and Fuji (富士), the two largest rooms
Taka, on the second floor, is the largest at 79.6㎡ for one to four guests; on the web booking site it cost ¥341,550 for two on a Saturday in October 2026. Fuji sits directly beneath it, named for the Mount Fuji painting on its shoin cupboard doors: two connected tatami rooms with an inner veranda over a maple garden, a wide anteroom, a small study corner and a roomier bath, according to stays written up in January and March 2026. Fuji isn't among the ten rooms sold online, so ask by phone.
Garden rooms with a sunken-kotatsu nook — e.g. Shōrai (松籟, new wing, ground floor) or Kasumi (霞, second floor)
A guest in Shōrai in December 2025 spent most of the stay in the horigotatsu nook beyond the main room, writing year-end cards and eating breakfast facing the garden. A repeat guest in Kasumi, an L-shaped room overlooking the courtyard, found in October 2024 that its window counter had become a sunken-kotatsu space. Mid-sized rooms on the web site — Kujaku (58㎡), Katsura (59㎡) and Sui (58.7㎡) — ran ¥240,350–265,650 for two on the same October Saturday. The inn renovates about one room a year, so details change.
Nên tránh
The smallest rooms — Akane (茜, 36.7㎡), Chikusen (竹泉, 37.1㎡), Kaede (楓, 39.7㎡) and Kotobuki (寿, 39.9㎡)
The entry price (¥177,100–189,750 for two on the October 2026 Saturday sampled) buys about half the space of the larger rooms, for one or two guests only. Bloggers keep saying the best part of Tawaraya is staying in — so if you plan to spend long hours in the room, the extra space is worth paying for.
Gyōsui-an (暁翠庵), if you want futons
It's a bed room with two single-size beds (90–130cm wide, according to the official booking site) rather than futons. The deep, knee-high futons that bloggers rave about come with the futon rooms, so pick one of those if the futons are what you want.
Anywhere in the old house, if you're unsteady on your feet
The wooden stairs are polished to a slippery shine — a repeat guest admits to having fallen down them once — and woven ceilings creak as cold air meets a warm room (December 2024). Japan's JTB lists a wheelchair-accessible lift and toilet; ask the inn about a ground-floor room.

Nhận định về bữa sáng
4.6/5In-room Japanese breakfast with yudōfu (simmered tofu) and a choice of grilled fish — guji, sea bream head, salmon, hokke or horse mackerel have all been offered — or a Western breakfast with omelette and fruit, at 7:30, 8:00, 8:30 or 9:00. Dishes can be swapped (agedashi tofu for yudōfu, rolled omelette for agedashi), and coffee comes in a cup with a bird hidden at the bottom
Phone if you want a specific room: only ten of the 18 rooms are sold online, and the inn says a call may turn up a room that suits your wishes. Arrive early enough to enjoy the room — warabi-mochi and tea come at check-in, the bath is filled for you, and in October 2024 everything in the in-room fridge was free. Look in on the Ernest Study, which recreates the study of photographer Ernest Satow of the owning family, and ask about seasonal events open to guests, such as mochibana-making on 13 December (2024) and a Nagoshi-no-harae purification on 27 June (2026). Parking is free, with valet.
Điểm đáng chú ý của bữa tối
4.6/5Kyoto kaiseki served course by course in your room, starting at 17:30, 18:00 or 18:30. The inn's stated philosophy is ishoku-dōgen — food as medicine — choosing fresh, wholesome ingredients over lavish rarities, under executive chef Nobukatsu Kurokawa. Recent menus: thin-sliced conger eel and dobin-mushi with matsutake and hamo (October 2024, a two-and-a-half-hour dinner); kabura-mushi, abalone with vinegared miso and duck hotpot (written up January 2026); bamboo shoots and a cherry-blossom soup (March 2026); eel chimaki, sea urchin rolled in nori, isaki grilled with flower sansho, and Kamo aubergine with conger eel (May 2026). JTB guests score dinner 94/100, and bloggers call it gentle, healthy and beautifully plated rather than showy. No vegetarian or gluten-free menus.
Onsen và thư giãn: thực tế ra sao
Not a hot spring. Each room has its own tub made of koyamaki (Japanese umbrella pine), a wood that holds heat well; the inn doesn't publish where its bathwater comes from.
None of our sources mention a shared bath: you bathe in your own room. Staff fill the tub to temperature when you arrive, and guests writing in 2026 were surprised it was still warm at bedtime. Tubs are compact, though a March 2026 guest found Fuji's roomier. The inn's own soap and wooden pails come with it, and a guest writing in May 2026 heard no traffic at all from busy Oike-dori just to the north.
No policy found on the official site or Japanese booking sites — contact the inn. You bathe only in your own in-room tub.
Lưu ý và những điều tinh tế

Booking: since 20 January 2026 the inn takes reservations on its official site as well as by phone (075-211-5566, 9:00–19:00); stays within two days must be booked by phone, and online bookings need a credit card. A blogger knew of JTB as the only travel agency selling it. Third-party listings may show no rooms — book direct or through JTB.
- 02
Check-in 15:00 (arrive by 18:00; if you arrive after 18:30 there is no dinner), check-out 11:00. Cancellation: 5% from 14 days before, 10% from 7 days, 20% at 4 days, 30% at 3–2 days, 50% the day before, 100% on the day.

Vegetarian and gluten-free meals aren't possible; allergies need at least 3 days' notice and may not be accommodated. Missed meals aren't refunded. Tips are already included in the rate.
- 04
The web booking engine doesn't accept children of any age, though JTB lists children's yukata, slippers and baby food — families should phone the inn.
- 05
Kyoto's accommodation tax is extra and, since 1 March 2026, based on the room-only rate per person per night: ¥4,000 from ¥50,000 and ¥10,000 from ¥100,000.
