Kisho Kurokawa's postmodern take on an Edo inn town, on the hill above Dogo: some of Shikoku's best-rated kaiseki and service, nine rooms with their own open-air onsen bath — but the shared baths are recirculated and the building shows its age
Dogokan is the big inn on the rise above Dogo's tram terminus that the architect Kisho Kurokawa designed around the idea Kurokawa called 'symbiosis' of old and new. Completed in 1989, it pairs a concrete postmodern exterior with an interior modelled on an Edo-period storehouse residence and old townscape: a lobby waterfall and stream, a 300-year-old pine in the garden, and a nail-free reconstruction of a tea room in the taste of the tea master Furuta Oribe. It has 90 rooms, 81 of them Japanese-style, and is run by a company in the Setonaikai Kisen ferry group; the top floor was rebuilt as Japanese-modern rooms in March 2023. Japanese guests rate it 4.7 across 2,736 reviews on one major site (dinner and service both 4.8), 4.66 across 2,091 on another and 4.59 across 181 on a third. The praise is remarkably consistent: seasonal Ehime kaiseki that always ends with sea-bream rice, served on striking ceramics; attentive room attendants; a free lounge pouring three kinds of mikan juice; and small touches such as staff wiping your car's windscreen before you leave. Only the nine seventh-floor rooms have their own open-air bath of Dogo spring water. The large baths use Dogo's piped spring but are recirculated and chlorinated, the men's and women's sides never swap, and they are reached by stairs (there is a stair lift). Complaints from late 2025 to 2026: an ageing building, thin futons, cramped entrances and toilets in some standard rooms, a lukewarm cold plunge and weak sauna, a dead insect left on one futon, and a May 2026 dinner served by a trainee under supervision that one couple said ruined the evening. Standard rooms with two meals run about ¥60,500–92,400 for two.

Shōfūrō seventh-floor rooms with a garden open-air bath (702–708; special rooms 701 and 709)
The inn's most popular type: nine rooms, each with a differently designed open-air bath of piped Dogo spring water you can use at any hour, and dinner and breakfast served in the room on the room-dining plans. The inn describes 709, 'Taki-no-yu', as a rock bath fed down stone steps like a stream, and takes requests for a particular bath when you book. 2026 reviewers raved about bathing late at night and at dawn; one May 2026 couple found the futon thin and hard. A travel agency lists ¥92,400–129,800 for two with two meals.
Eighth-floor rooms: Japanese-modern twins (802–807), corner room 801 and room 808
Rebuilt in March 2023 with Kurokawa-inspired details, with views over Matsuyama to the castle. Corner room 801, the only Japanese-Western room, has a 12.5-tatami room, a bedroom with a double bed and a hinoki bath (not onsen) and sleeps four adults; a September 2026 guest loved the view and the scent of the hinoki. The twins are for two adults. No children under 12 on this floor, and guests here can book the weekend tea ceremony free.
Nên tránh
Some standard Japanese rooms (10–12.5 tatami) and the Western twins
Standard rooms are classic tatami rooms with a massage chair by the window, and their baths are not onsen. Guests in November 2025 and September 2026 found the entrance and toilet so cramped that shoes barely fit; a July 2026 guest found a dead insect on a freshly laid futon that felt damp, and others found the futons thin. The Western twins are 17–22㎡ (renovated in 2014) and take no children; a July 2026 guest complained the duvet cover kept slipping off.

Nhận định về bữa sáng
4.5/5A Japanese set breakfast in the restaurant (in your room on the open-air-bath room plans) with many small dishes — grilled fish, local Uchiko ham, homemade kinzanji miso, with porridge or multigrain rice on request — praised as generous and carefully made, though some found it too sweet or plain, and a November 2025 guest had dry fish and cold miso soup
Book a seventh-floor room and name the bath you want. The tea ceremony in the Juandō tea room runs on Saturday and Sunday nights at 20:00, 20:35 and 21:10 (¥1,500 per adult, free for seventh-floor, eighth-floor and VIP-room guests). The Ōgi lounge (7:00–21:00) pours free mikan juices and coffee, and the inn lends towels and baskets for the public bathhouses. Parking ¥880 per stay; staff park the car.
Điểm đáng chú ý của bữa tối
4.6/5Creative kaiseki in three grades — Mai, Shō and Juraku — that always ends with sea-bream rice; a spring menu runs from abalone soup and an Iyo-beef hotpot to grilled Spanish mackerel and local chicken, and some plans let you choose a sea-bream or Iyo-beef set. It's served in your room on room-dining plans, otherwise in the partitioned, semi-private Shiki and Hanasuki restaurants (the latter opened in 2020). Reviewers praise the seasonality, ceramics, generous portions and careful allergy handling. Critics in 2026 found it 'just normal' for the price, a dining room that felt like a big hall with thin partitions, and small bowls.
Onsen và thư giãn: thực tế ra sao
Dogo's alkaline simple spring, piped from the town's shared supply (Dogo Onsen No. 1 distribution tank, 48.1°C at source and 40°C in use, according to the analysis a May 2026 visitor photographed). The inn says the large baths are 100% Dogo spring water kept warm and clean by heat-exchange recirculation and filtration with chlorination; a booking site lists them as heated and recirculated. Only the falling-water bath is free-flowing. The seventh-floor open-air baths use piped Dogo spring water; other in-room baths are not onsen.
The baths are in an annex reached along the 'yukemuri no michi', a corridor styled as an old town street, then down stairs with a stair lift. The men's bath (annex 1F) and women's (annex 3F) are fixed and never swap; each has hot and cooler tubs (about 42°C and 39°C), an open-air bath, a falling-water bath, a lie-down bath and a sauna, with towels provided (5:00–9:30, 14:00–24:00). Guests love the variety, but complaints include a small open-air bath (November 2025), a 79°C sauna with a stopped clock (January 2026), a lukewarm cold plunge and no outdoor cooling area (May and August 2026), a faint chlorine smell (December 2025) and the hinoki bath closed for repairs in September 2026. No private (kashikiri) baths.
The official site says people with tattoos are refused in the large baths. The nine seventh-floor rooms with their own open-air onsen bath are the only private alternative.
Lưu ý và những điều tinh tế
- 01
Check-in 15:00 (until about 21:30), check-out 10:00; some travel-agency plans offer 14:00 in and 11:00 out.
- 02
Closed for maintenance 6–12 December 2026 and 5–7 January 2027; the large baths reopen the afternoon after each closure.
- 03
Children are welcome in standard and open-air-bath rooms, with children's yukata, cots, baby baths and simple children's meals — but the eighth floor takes no one under 12 and the Western twins take no children.
- 04
Allergies and disliked foods must be notified at least three days before arrival; later requests may not be accommodated.
- 05
A 90-room house with banquet halls for up to 220 and a karaoke lounge; the baths involve a walk and stairs that older guests found hard (September 2026), and some 2026 guests mention a dated building and a stained lounge carpet.
