Ureshino's valley hideaway: 20 rooms strung along a mountain stream, each with its own hinoki bath of free-flowing spring water, a huge riverside open-air bath and fireflies in June — but the big baths are recirculated, the outdoor corridors are a maze, and the food is solid rather than special
Shiibasanso was opened in April 1995 by Taishoya, a Ureshino inn founded in 1925, as a retreat in the Shiiba valley above the spa town. Its 20 rooms — mostly a 10-tatami room plus a twin bedroom — stand like stepping stones along the stream, linked by roofed open-air corridors; a travel-guide stay report credits the design to Itagaki Yaya, a disciple of the architect Junzo Yoshimura. Every room has its own bath of spring water, which the booking sites list as 100% free-flowing, and the riverside Shiiba-no-yu, added in 1998, is billed as Ureshino's largest open-air bath. Most recent evidence comes from booking-site reviews: Japanese guests rate it 4.7 across 886 reviews on one major site (baths and service 4.8), 4.52 across 556 on another and 4.65 across 76 on a third. They praise the quiet, the waterfall lit up at night, fireflies from late May, the staff's warmth (one guest with a wheelchair user called the barrier-free room the best they had found) and the melting onsen-tofu at breakfast. The complaints, dated 2025–2026: aging rooms with musty smells or weak heating, insects and humidity in summer, crowded shared baths in the school holidays, a dining room with no partitions, Saga beef too fatty for some, a breakfast buffet several repeat guests find ordinary, and a sloping site of stairs and outdoor walkways that a 2022 blogger called a maze, along with thin walls. The shared baths are heated and recirculated. Two-meal stays for two run from about ¥55,000 to ¥70,000.

Riverside detached rooms (川沿い離れ, Type 1R) — e.g. Kajika (河鹿)
A 10-tatami room and a twin bedroom (up to six people) with a hinoki bath of spring water, right on the stream. Guests in 2025–2026 watched fireflies and the lit-up waterfall from the window, and one regular always books this type. The catch: a February 2026 couple in Kajika found the heating didn't reach the whole room and the toilet was freezing. Booked through one major site, two-meal stays for two start around ¥66,000–68,000.
Second-floor Japanese-Western rooms (Type 1W) and the single barrier-free room (Type 1B)
The upper rooms sit highest, with the waterfall at eye level; a June 2026 guest travelling with a parent nearly 90 preferred one to the riverside rooms because it is close to the front desk and dining room. The barrier-free room has a wheelchair-friendly washroom, handrails and a stone bath you step down into — a September 2026 family with a 91-year-old wheelchair user said it was the first bath the parent could get into unaided.
Nên tránh
The two-storey block away from the river (Types 1W and 2) and the Japanese rooms (Type 3)
A 2022 blogger on the second floor of this block heard a neighbouring family's children through the walls and waited almost an hour for the slow tap to fill the bath. In 2026 a ground-floor guest's window looked only onto another roof, and another found the ground floor stuffy. The inn itself warns that the Type 3 Japanese rooms (up to three people, the cheapest at about ¥55,000 for two) are near the group dining room, so voices may carry.

Tìm hiểu kỹ về ẩm thực
Nhận định về bữa sáng
3.9/5A buffet of 30-plus mostly Japanese dishes (7:30–9:30) built around Taishoya's own 'melting' onsen-yudōfu, ginjō tofu and Ureshino tea porridge, with rice from local terraced paddies — the tofu wins near-universal praise, but several 2022–2026 guests found the rest 'business-hotel' level for the price, and repeat guests miss the earlier style of small individual dishes
Ask at the front desk for the free shuttle to the sister inn Taishoya in town — it runs every 30 minutes in the evening, and its Shiki-no-yu and Taki-no-yu baths are free for Shiibasanso guests (you can get a same-day ticket to use them after check-out). Take some of the room's Ureshino tea home: guests rave about it and the shop sells it. Book the station pickup in advance; it isn't a scheduled service.
Điểm đáng chú ý của bữa tối
4.3/5The Shiiba kaiseki (start between 18:00 and 19:15) is served in the high-ceilinged Shiiba restaurant overlooking the stream (there is no in-room dining), on Arita and Hasami porcelain, with Taishoya's selected beef or a Saga beef hot-plate as the main and river fish such as yamame and ayu in season. Most 2025–2026 reviewers found it carefully made and generous, and the anniversary plan adds a cake and sparkling wine. Critics found the A5 Saga beef too fatty, dishes laid out from the start and going cold, nothing extra to order, and the open dining room so unpartitioned that neighbours' conversations carried. The Yamaboshi barbecue restaurant by Shiiba-no-yu has been closed since late July, with reopening to be announced.
Onsen và thư giãn: thực tế ra sao
A sodium bicarbonate-chloride spring (hypotonic, neutral, 48.8°C) from the inn's own sources. The booking sites list every room's bath as 100% free-flowing spring water; one major site lists the shared baths as heated and recirculated through filters. A 2022 blogger found the water lighter and less slippery than the town's baths (the posted analysis showed pH 7.24) and recommends also bathing at Taishoya in town.
Every room has its own spring-water bath, mostly hinoki. Shiiba-no-yu, a short walk up from the inn, has a large indoor bath and a broad open-air bath beside the river, open to guests and day visitors (¥1,300) from 9:00 to 21:00; an October 2025 guest was told 9:00–11:00 is for staying guests only, and it closed for about a week in spring 2025 after a pump failure. The guests-only Yama-no-yu (renovated 2018) has a rock open-air bath lit at night and an indoor bath (6:00–11:30 and 12:30–24:00). Guests often had the baths almost to themselves, but in summer 2025 one found Shiiba-no-yu crowded with families, and a July 2026 guest found the outdoor water too hot. No private (kashikiri) baths.
No policy found on the official site or Japanese booking sites — contact the inn. Every room has its own spring-water bath.
Lưu ý và những điều tinh tế
- 01
Check-in 15:00 (official plans say by 19:00), check-out 11:00. Cancellation: 30% from 3 days before, 50% the day before, 100% on the day; the New Year plan is prepaid and non-refundable.
- 02
Getting there: the last stretch is a narrow, winding mountain road that several guests found hard to follow — a returning guest drove it on normal tyres after snow without trouble. Free parking for about 100 cars; the free pickup from Ureshino-Onsen Station or the bus centre must be booked ahead.
- 03
The inn is spread over a slope: rooms, baths and restaurant are linked by roofed but open-air corridors with stairs and ramps — cold in winter, buggy in summer and confusing to some. The inn says it is almost entirely barrier-free and lends wheelchairs, but a 2026 wheelchair user found some ramps steep.
- 04
Rates on the official site start at ¥17,600 per person, but that assumes six people in one room. For two, one major site lists the standard plan at about ¥55,000 in a Japanese room and ¥58,000–68,000 in the Japanese-Western and riverside rooms, tax included.
- 05
Fireflies peak around early June (late May to mid-June, often more than 100), and autumn leaves around early to mid-November. Pets are not allowed (assistance dogs only); Wi-Fi throughout.
