Đánh giá chung của du khách Nhật

A private cable car drops 170 metres to riverside baths of fizzy, body-temperature sulphur water — Shikoku's great onsen adventure, if you don't mind stairs and a winding road

Hotel Iya Onsen sits on a cliff in the Iya Valley, and its signature is a cable car that descends 170 metres at a 42-degree angle to two open-air baths beside the river. The water is an alkaline sulphur spring at about 38°C, free-flowing, silky and slightly fizzy, so guests happily soak for a long time — 'neither heated nor diluted… silky sulphur water', as one wrote. Japanese reviewers rate it highly: 4.64 across 564 reviews on one major site and 4.63 on another, with the baths scoring highest (4.74–4.79). They also like the views, the L'Occitane amenities and local food — amego trout, Iya soba and Awa beef. The drawbacks: the riverside water is too cool to enjoy fully in winter, the baths are open to day visitors until about 17:00, there's a wait of 10–15 minutes if you just miss the car, and summer brings horseflies. Rooms with their own bath use spring water pumped up, heated and recirculated, which loses the fizz and smell. There's no lift and a lot of stairs, the approach road is narrow and subject to roadworks closures, and several reviewers felt dinner wasn't worth the price or found some newer staff less polished. Bloggers paid about ¥39,000–40,000 per person with two meals in rooms with a private bath.

Hướng dẫn chọn phòng

Nên chọn

  • View-bath rooms (e.g. Tenrai 天籟, refitted March 2024)

Rooms with a view bath over the valley; a 2024 guest paid ¥39,000 per person before tax for Tenrai, with free fridge drinks and L'Occitane amenities, and a 2025 guest returning after 20 years stayed in the same type. The in-room bath is heated and loses the spring's fizz — 'just hot water', that guest felt — so use the riverside baths for the real thing.

  • Open-air-bath rooms (Futarijime ふたりじめ, Aioi) and the Tamayura suite

Futarijime has a Shigaraki-ware tub; guests paid about ¥40,000 per person with two meals in 2022. The tub is filled by hand and, one blogger noted, is heated, recirculated and disinfected. Tamayura adds a foot bath.

Nên tránh

  • Any room, for guests who can't manage stairs

The inn says there's no lift and moving around means stairs, and warns older and disabled guests they'll be inconvenienced; even the riverside baths involve about two floors of steps. Recent complaints also include weak shower pressure, a small TV, a squeaky mattress and, in June 2026, moths that made one guest's in-room bath unusable.

Tìm hiểu kỹ về ẩm thực

Nhận định về bữa sáng

4.1/5

A Japanese or Western set with a half-buffet, served 7:00–9:00 (the 8:00 slot fills up); one 2026 guest found the Japanese option plain

Ride the cable car down early (from 7:00) or in the evening (last car down 20:30) to have the riverside baths without day visitors, and book the private riverside bath Yamagiri-no-yu (¥3,000 per 60 minutes) in advance. The front door locks at 21:00.

Điểm đáng chú ý của bữa tối

4.1/5

Kaiseki in two sittings (18:00 or 19:00), from a basic course with Iya soba and Iya tofu up to the popular Awa select course with whole amego trout sashimi and venison; bloggers describe soba-subeshi, sudachi-salted ayu, Awa Kintoki pork tomato hotpot and Awa beef steak, in a windowless room decorated with murals by Hideki Kimura. Reviewers call the local dishes a highlight but several felt dinner was 'not worth the price', one was seated at the far end at both meals, and the drinks list is mostly big commercial brands.

Onsen và thư giãn: thực tế ra sao

Loại nước

An alkaline simple sulphur spring at about 38°C. The riverside baths are free-flowing and unheated; the indoor view bath (Un'yu Tenku-no-yu) is heated and recirculated, and in-room baths are pumped spring water that is heated.

Sự riêng tư và không gian

Two riverside open-air baths, Keikoku-no-yu and Seseragi-no-yu, swap between men and women daily; guests can use them 7:00–21:00 (until 19:00 from early January to February). There's no washing area by the river, no photography, and no swimwear. Day visitors (¥2,000 including the cable car) come 7:30–17:00. In winter the 38°C water feels cold, in summer horseflies bite, and one guest was bothered by noisy bathers.

Quy định về hình xăm

No policy found on the official site or its terms of stay — contact the inn. The private riverside bath and rooms with their own bath avoid sharing.

Lưu ý và những điều tinh tế

  1. 01

Getting there: one reserved pickup a day from JR Oboke Station at 15:10 (book by the day before; about 30 minutes), with a return at 9:50. Free parking for 37 cars. Check-in 15:00 (last 19:00), check-out 11:00.

  2. 02

The approach road is narrow and winding, with rockfall and scheduled roadworks closures — one guest waited 50 minutes, another wasn't warned of a closure. Check before driving.

  3. 03

The baths list Wednesday as a closing day for day visitors; ask whether this affects your stay.

  4. 04

Some reviewers found newer staff less polished, while others praised their friendliness.

Children are welcome, with children's meals for ages 3–12.
