Free-flowing or recirculated? How to tell real onsen water before you book
'Hot spring' on a booking page can mean anything from water straight from the source to recirculated, chlorinated tap water in your room. What the Japanese terms mean, and which ryokan in our directory pass the test.
Cập nhật ngày 14 thg 10, 2026
Japanese bathers care intensely about how the water reaches the tub. The gold standard is gensen kakenagashi (源泉かけ流し): spring water that flows in and overflows out, used once. At the other end, many baths are junkan (循環) — the same water is filtered, reheated and chlorinated and sent round again. In between sit baths with water added (加水) to cool very hot springs, or heated (加温) when the spring is too cool. None of this is necessarily bad, but it changes the feel, smell and freshness of the water — and it's the single most common source of disappointment in the reviews we read.
Japanese law requires baths to post the spring's analysis and say whether water is added, heated, recirculated or disinfected, so the information exists — usually on a sign by the changing room, in Japanese. Booking sites such as Ikyu and Jalan also mark free-flowing baths. Below, we group the ryokan in our directory by what Japanese guests and the inns themselves report.
Free-flowing, nothing added
These inns report every shared bath as 100% free-flowing with no heating, no added water and no recirculation — often from their own sources. Aizu's Mukaitaki uses a spring rising on the premises; Fujisan Ryokan runs even its showers on spring water; Okutsuso's water rises beneath the bath floor; Myoken Ishiharaso cools its spring through heat exchangers rather than adding water. Takamiya at Zao and Kanaguya at Shibu use their own springs without adding water, heating or recirculating, while Sumiyoshiya at Nozawa cools its very hot water by air and Naraya at Kusatsu rests its spring overnight and stirs it by hand instead of diluting it.

Free-flowing where it matters — check which bath
At these inns the best water is in specific baths, while others are recirculated. At Bettei Otozure the in-room open-air baths are free-flowing but the shared baths are recirculated; at Ryokan Omuraya the private and in-room baths are free-flowing and the indoor large bath recirculated; at Yufuin Tamanoyu the in-room baths are free-flowing while a notice describes the shared baths as filtered and chlorinated; at Gora Kadan the detached suites' open-air baths are source-fed while the shared indoor bath has water added; and at Hotel Iya Onsen the riverside baths are free-flowing while the indoor view bath and room baths are heated. At Yukairo Kikuya in Shuzenji, the four free private baths and the Sōan and Kura open-air tubs are source water flowing through, with water added to cool it, while the large indoor bath and the garden open-air bath are diluted, heated and recirculated. At Yumura Onsen Asanoya the large baths mix free-flowing water with recirculation and filtration and are chlorinated; a 2024 blogger found only one outdoor tub running free-flow, and the taps in every room's bath run on spring water. At Shosuke no Yado Takinoyu in Aizu's Higashiyama Onsen, five sources are blended and those below 42°C are heated: the cooler tubs are free-flowing, the hotter ones mix free-flowing water with heated, recirculated and filtered water, and the hinoki and hiba tubs are 100% free-flowing. At Misasa Onsen Misasakan the inn says the open-air baths and the private bath are free-flowing, while the large indoor baths combine free-flowing and filtered recirculated water; of the room baths, the concept rooms' are free-flowing, Bettei Rin's are listed as recirculated, and standard rooms have ordinary baths.

Read the small print
Some well-known inns surprise guests. Several accounts say in-room baths at Kinosaki's Nishimuraya Honkan are filled with heated tap water, even in suites with their own open-air tub. At Unzen's Hanzuiryo only the two special rooms have onsen in the room. Lake Shikotsu's Ao no Za says its in-room baths are recirculated and chlorinated, Oku-Yugawara's Tsubaki is listed as recirculated with water added and heated, and at Awazu's Houshi the large baths are recirculated and chlorinated, with free-flowing water only in rooms that have their own onsen. In Kyoto, Hiiragiya and Hoshinoya Kyoto aren't onsen at all — their baths use groundwater or regular hot water. In Noboribetsu, Bourou Noguchi Noboribetsu says every bath, the in-room baths included, is free-flowing, but Jalan lists the water as diluted, and one blogger found the in-room water paler than the outdoor bath. And at Awara Onsen Grandia Housen the inn's own usage table shows that every bath, including all 33 in-room open-air tubs, has water added, is heated and recirculated, and is disinfected with chlorine and bromine, while the Sakura-tei SUITE rooms' semi-open-air tubs aren't onsen at all. At Unzen Fukudaya the inn says its milky sulphur spring runs free-flowing into all its onsen baths, but the tubs in most main-building rooms are heated tap water: only the Panorama Twins and the Yamaterrace annex rooms have spring-fed open-air baths, and even the annex's top room, Fuku, has a tap-water indoor tub.
None of these is a reason to avoid an inn — several are among Japan's most celebrated — but if fresh spring water is the point of your trip, choose the room accordingly. Every report in our directory has a 'water type' line saying exactly what we found.
