Đánh giá chung của du khách Nhật

Yugawara's oldest inn: three registered-heritage wooden buildings, its own 82°C spring poured unrecirculated into every bath and two free private open-air tubs — but no lift, steep stairs, thin walls and modest dinners

Uenoya says it has taken guests since the Edo period — over 300 years — and calls itself the oldest inn in Yugawara. Its three wooden buildings, the 1923 annex, the four-storey 1930 main house and the 1930s entrance hall, were registered as national tangible cultural properties in 2010. Guests compare the maze of polished keyaki corridors and camphor-wood stairs to Spirited Away. The real draw is the water: the inn's own well, 300 m deep, gives a sodium-calcium chloride-sulfate spring at about 82°C, and every bath, including the in-room baths, gets it straight from the well. There is no recirculation or chlorine; the inn brings it down to about 42°C by blending in cooled spring water, adding a little cold water where needed. Japanese guests rate it 4.7 across 750 reviews on one major site (baths 4.8) and 4.61 across 405 on another. Bloggers who stayed in 2022 and 2023, and a bank's onsen column in 2024, praise the two free private open-air baths, the hinoki foot bath on the roof and the easygoing family service. Know before you book: there is no lift and the stairs are steep, sound carries through the wooden walls, only three or four rooms have their own bath and five have no toilet, and dinners are deliberately small. In 2026 one guest called the food ready-made and the building musty, and another found the rice cold. Card payment is limited, so bring cash. Most 2026 guests paid about ¥19,000–25,000 per person with two meals, and ¥30,000+ for a room with its own bath.

Hướng dẫn chọn phòng

Nên chọn

  • The rooms with their own spring-water bath (10 tatami), including room 33

Only three or four rooms have a private indoor bath (no open-air ones). The official site lists two in hinoki and one edged in Izu stone, each with a scalding-spring tap and a cooled-spring tap. Room 33, which has a Japanese rattan bed, got a new Towada-stone bath big enough for two in September 2026, with an air-conditioned changing room. A June 2026 repeat guest called theirs the best room they had stayed in at the inn, and an August 2026 guest on an in-room dining plan loved both the room bath and the private baths. Expect to pay about ¥30,000 per person or more.

  • Fourth-floor rooms beside the private baths, such as room 51

A 2022 blogger in room 51 climbed several flights but had the private open-air baths right next door, with fast Wi-Fi even up there. A December 2025 guest in a room facing the private baths went in again and again. Standard 10-tatami rooms with a wide window-side engawa and toilet start at about ¥19,000–25,000 per person with two meals in 2026.

Nên tránh

  • The five 8–10-tatami rooms without a toilet, and any room for guests who struggle with stairs

The cheapest type shares toilets and washbasins in the corridor. A solo traveller in corner room 30 (8 tatami) paid ¥18,700 in September 2023 and was happy, but it suits seasoned travellers. There's no lift, the stairs are steep and the layout is a maze; ask for a low floor if needed. A November 2024 guest heard laughter from next door, and the inn itself admits that sound carries.

Nhận định về bữa sáng

4.3/5

A traditional set breakfast at 8:00 or 8:30 in the dining room: dried horse mackerel, kamaboko, yudōfu in soy milk and help-yourself miso soup. Simple, salty and well liked

Go to the private baths early in your stay: on quiet nights they are first come, first served (the changing-room light switches on a lamp near the stairs so you know they're busy), but on busy days you book a slot at check-in. Drinks have 15% service charge and tax added, outside food isn't allowed, and you pay a corkage fee (¥1,150 + tax for a bottle of wine). From 1 October to 30 November 2026 every dinner includes a matsutake dobin-mushi.

Điểm đáng chú ý của bữa tối

4.1/5

Dinner is a monthly kaiseki served in the dining room at 18:00 or 18:30. In-room dining costs ¥1,500 extra (+ tax), and in September 2026 two new private dining rooms opened. Heavier plans add kinmedai simmered in the Kantō style, a tub of Sagami Bay sashimi or wagyu shabu-shabu. Guests praise the local fish (a 2022 blogger loved the simmered kinmedai), the eel chawanmushi and the light seasoning, and a September 2025 couple had a whole grilled abalone. The inn itself says portions run slightly small; the rice came cold for one guest in June 2026, and a May 2026 reviewer found the food ready-made.

Onsen và thư giãn: thực tế ra sao

Loại nước

The inn's own sodium-calcium chloride-sulfate spring (pH 8.3, about 82°C at source), from a 300 m well on the grounds (one of its two wells is now in use). The inn says every bath gets it straight from the well, with no recirculation and no chlorine. Booking sites note water is added, and the inn cools the spring through a pipe in a water tank so it needs to add as little as possible.

Sự riêng tư và không gian

Mubyō-no-yu, two small indoor baths in granite and hinoki with gourd-shaped spouts and a hotter and a cooler tub, swap between men and women at 22:00 (open 15:00–8:30). The hinoki side was redone in summer 2026. Two private open-air baths on the fourth floor, Chitose (two or three people) and Fujiki, are free of charge (15:00–22:00 and 7:00–9:00, about 30 minutes each): Chitose is small and screened, while Fujiki is larger, slightly cooler and has more of a mountain view. A hinoki foot bath on the top floor looks over the mountains next to an early-Shōwa lounge. There's no large open-air bath.

Quy định về hình xăm

No policy found on the official site or Japanese booking sites — contact the inn. Two private baths and the in-room baths can be used alone.

Lưu ý và những điều tinh tế

  1. 01

Check-in 15:00 (last 19:00; call if arriving after 18:00), check-out 10:00. The official FAQ says payment is cash or Visa only, and some booking sites say cards can't be used at the inn, so bring cash.

  2. 02

October 2026: the inn warns of fake booking emails and messages after a breach at its reservation system, Temairazu, affecting some bookings made by 21 September 2026 for stays from that date. The inn says it never asks for personal details by message.

  3. 03

No lift: everything from the private baths to the dining room is up steep stairs, and the inn calls this part of the building's charm. Guests with weak legs should ask for a low floor, and families with small children should check before booking.

  4. 04

Children are welcome: primary-school children pay 70% of the adult rate, younger ones 40–50% with a children's meal, or ¥1,650–3,300 without one. A three-generation family in 2025 used Bettei, a renovated two-storey house on Yumoto-dōri (opened 2022, up to six guests, its own spring bath, meals taken in the main inn).

  5. 05

Free parking for one car per room in 12 spaces (staff park it), on narrow lanes. No station shuttle: take bus stop 2 at Yugawara Station to Onsenba-chūō.
