Milky, free-flowing sulphur water in eight baths and a much-loved kaiseki with lava-grilled abalone and cheese fondue, at fair prices — but most main-building rooms have tap-water baths, and the old building is a maze of steps
Fukudaya opened in September 1968 as Hotel New Unzen and has kept reinventing itself: renamed a folk-craft inn in 1988 and a 'mingei modern' inn in 2011, it added the seven-room Yamaterrace annex in 2017 and rebuilt its main-building rooms in spring 2023 as twin-bedded Japanese-Western rooms, some with a sauna. It's a 34-room house a short walk from the Unzen Jigoku vents. The draw is the water: a milky, acidic sulphur spring (pH 2.4) that the inn says runs free-flowing into all its baths — two open-air baths, two indoor baths with saunas and four private baths, two of them free for guests. Japanese guests rate it 4.6 across 3,470 reviews on one major site (dinner 4.8), 4.52 across 890 on another and 4.55 across 120 on a third; most recent evidence comes from these booking-site reviews, backed by a 2024 blog stay and a June 2026 travelogue. They praise the soft, skin-smoothing baths, a kaiseki served in private dining rooms — live abalone grilled on lava stone, A5 Nagasaki wagyu suki-shabu and a surprisingly popular vegetable cheese fondue — plus teppanyaki and counter-tempura alternatives, a clay-pot rice breakfast and warm, unhurried staff. Know before you book: most main-building rooms have heated tap-water tubs, not onsen; only the Panorama Twins and the annex rooms have spring-fed open-air baths. 2026 reviewers mention a maze of corridors and steps with one lift, dated fittings behind the renovation, an over-soft mattress, very low beds in the annex, lukewarm summer baths, ants at one room bath and a kaiseki menu unchanged for years. Two-meal stays run about ¥16,000–30,000+ per person.

Những gì du khách từng ở đây thực sự khuyênNên chọn
Yamaterrace annex (山照別邸) — seven rooms, each with a spring-fed open-air bath
Fuku (福, 63.7㎡ plus a 14.6㎡ terrace) is the top room — a June 2026 travelogue called it luxurious and spacious, though its indoor tub is heated tap water, not onsen, and the terrace got soaked in the rain. Kumo and Sora (about 41㎡ plus 21–23㎡ terraces) and the courtyard-bath rooms Shin, Sō, Rin and Yō (38–42㎡) can't be chosen individually within each type. Annex guests get Schlaraffia mattresses, a free fridge and a guests-only music lounge with free drinks (snacks are just nuts). One October 2026 guest found the annex beds so low that an older parent struggled to get up.
Panorama Twin (パノラマツイン, main building, 44.2㎡)
The main building's only rooms with their own spring-fed open-air bath, on a terrace facing the mountains, plus an in-room sauna; August 2026 guests gave it top marks. One September 2026 guest in this room still booked the two free family baths at check-in and wrote that you could drop a room grade and enjoy the baths just as much.
Nên tránh
Standard, Premium and Separate Twins, and the 23.7㎡ Casual Twin
Renovated in 2023 and roomy (37–47㎡), but their in-room tubs are heated tap water, not onsen; Standard Twins come as Japanese-Western or Western rooms and you can't choose. 2026 reviewers mention a three-step air-conditioner that ran too hot or too cold, wobbly taps, weak hot water, and a dated washbasin in a Separate Twin; a 2024 roundup of reviews noted some rooms look onto the car park. The Casual Twin has single beds and a unit bath.

Tìm hiểu kỹ về ẩm thực
Nhận định về bữa sáng
4.5/5A Japanese breakfast in the same private room as dinner: clay-pot rice and a big pot of miso soup to share, grilled fish, ham and eggs cooked on a burner and egg-on-rice with the inn's own dashi soy — widely praised and filling
Book the free private baths (Hinoki and Santarō, 50 minutes each) at check-in — several 2026 guests missed them because no one explained they were free. The panoramic Kunpū bath and the main-building baths swap between men and women morning and evening, so bathe both times to try them all. Parking is free (40 cars) but the lots are narrow and a short walk away, and the route to the front desk confused several 2026 guests.
Điểm đáng chú ý của bữa tối
4.6/5Three options, all in the annex or main building rather than in your room. The Fukudaya kaiseki in private rooms at Nabedanran — in July 2024: sashimi under dry-ice mist, live Tachibana Bay abalone grilled on lava stone, yam-topped chawanmushi, local vegetables in cheese fondue, the Shimabara seaweed noodle hyottsuru and A5 Nagasaki wagyu suki-shabu. Teppanyaki at the Sakurabashi counter features 80g of A5 Nagasaki wagyu fillet and is adults-only; a June 2026 traveller called its karasumi, abalone and wagyu the best ever eaten. Counter tempura at Kōfuku is also served on the Nanatsuboshi cruise train's Unzen course (renewed in September 2023). Critics: 'nothing surprising', a regular wishing the kaiseki changed after years, and no printed menu at the teppanyaki.
Onsen và thư giãn: thực tế ra sao
Unzen's milky acidic sulphur spring (officially a simple acidic sulphur-iron(II) spring, hydrogen-sulphide type, pH 2.4). The inn states it is piped to all its onsen baths and runs free-flowing (kakenagashi). The indoor tubs in guest rooms are heated tap water, according to the room pages and a June 2026 travelogue.
The guests-only Kunpū panoramic open-air bath with an 'infinity' edge and sauna (annex, 3F) and the main building's Seseragi open-air bath, Fugen indoor bath (with a cedar-and-brick sauna) and Hakuun indoor bath (one hot and one lukewarm tub) swap between men and women morning and evening. Four private baths, 50 minutes each: Marutanbo ¥2,000 per room, Yōgan ¥1,000, Hinoki and Santarō free. A 2024 blogger found them uncrowded; 2026 complaints include lukewarm water in summer, another bather's shower spraying into the tub and steps that make the open-air baths hard for older guests.
No policy found on the official site or Japanese booking sites — contact the inn. The annex rooms and Panorama Twins have their own open-air bath, and two private baths are free.
Lưu ý và những điều tinh tế
- 01
Check-in 15:00; check-out 10:00 in the main building and 11:00 in the Yamaterrace annex.
- 02
Getting there takes about 55 minutes by car from Isahaya IC or JR Isahaya Station on a winding mountain road, or around 70 minutes by bus; fog and heavy rain are common.
- 03
The old main building is a warren of extensions with one lift, many short stairways and a confusing layout — 2026 reviewers don't recommend it for people with limited mobility.
- 04
Dinner starts are fixed by plan: the standard kaiseki at 17:30 or 18:00, teppanyaki at 18:00 or 19:30 — a September 2026 guest wished this had been explained at booking.
- 05
Primary-school children pay 70% of the adult rate with adult meals or 50% with a children's meal; the Sakurabashi teppanyaki doesn't accept children below junior-high age.
