Đánh giá chung của du khách Nhật

A 1910 inn in the middle of Takeo Onsen, kept as a Taishō-era time capsule of music boxes, gramophones and pick-your-own-cup coffee — now room-only with a free bread breakfast, and its own spring is heated and recirculated in an ageing building

Kyotoya opened in 1910 in the centre of Takeo Onsen, five minutes' walk from the vermilion Rōmon gate, and today sells itself on Taishō-era nostalgia: a lobby and lounge filled with antique furniture, an 1890s Symphonion disc music box, a 1910s Reginaphone and old SP records that staff play for guests, plus free self-service coffee drunk from a cup you choose from a cabinet of fine china. It's a 35-room house and is now effectively room-only: a guest returning in March 2026 after seven years found no meals beyond the free light breakfast the inn introduced in December 2024 — bread, salad, soup such as clam chowder, coffee and juice. The baths use the inn's own source of mild alkaline simple spring (pH 8.2), but the inn's own data show it emerges at 26.5°C and is boiler-heated and recirculated through filters. The men's and women's sides each have a high-ceilinged indoor bath with a granite tub, an open-air bath and a dry sauna installed in June 2025, and the indoor bath stays open all night. Japanese guests rate it 4.32 across 494 reviews on one major site and 4.3 across 364 on another, with service the top score (4.37 and 4.4). Bloggers in 2026 praise the atmosphere, the breakfast, a desk-friendly room for working stays and staff who run on heart rather than a manual. The complaints are about an ageing building: the cheapest rooms have no toilet (one guest's nearest was two floors down), weak showers in the big bath (November 2025), an in-room bath with no hot water (September 2026), boiler and air-conditioner noise, hot corridors in summer and stairs down to the bath. Room-only rates run about ¥17,000–37,000 for two.

Hướng dẫn chọn phòng

Nên chọn

  • Taishō Roman (大正浪漫), the renovated 10 + 8 tatami two-room suite

Renovated in January 2021 with antique furniture and twin beds across two connecting tatami rooms, with its own bath and toilet — the inn's top room, from about ¥25,000 for two room-only on one booking site in October 2026. A July 2026 guest in this room loved the spring but found the corridors and lift uncomfortably hot.

  • 8-tatami Japanese rooms with bath and toilet (mostly on the third floor), or the 6-tatami bed rooms for solo stays

A blogger who stayed three times in six months in 2026 always picks an 8-tatami room with bath and toilet: views over the town, a wide desk (ask the front desk for a lamp) and plans pitched at remote work. A solo April 2026 traveller paid ¥6,740 through Agoda for a 6-tatami single with a bed on the tatami and a table facing the window.

Nên tránh

  • Rooms without bath or toilet (the 6-tatami singles and some 8-tatami rooms), and anyone sensitive to noise

The cheapest rooms share toilets: in January 2025 a guest on the fourth floor had to go down to the second, and an August 2026 guest regretted missing that detail when booking. Expect an ageing building — in-room tap water smelled odd and air-conditioner and boiler noise kept a January 2025 guest awake, a 2026 blogger heard a constant low drone at night, and in September 2026 one room's bath had no hot water and the toilet wouldn't flush. A September 2026 family found snack crumbs left by the sofa.

Nhận định về bữa sáng

4.2/5

A free light breakfast for every guest (since December 2024): several kinds of bread, salad, soup such as clam chowder, coffee, tea and apple juice in a quiet former banquet hall — widely called far better than expected, though a March 2026 guest missed Japanese dishes and late risers find the bread picked over

Come down around 8:00, when a long-serving staff member plays the antique music boxes and gramophone in the lobby — ask and old SP records may come out too. Lounge coffee is free during set hours (decaf available); choose your cup from the cabinet. Early-bird plans booked 30 or 60 days ahead cut up to 20%. Drivers: the stone-paved lot by the entrance can scrape low cars, so a summer 2026 guest suggests the lot across the road (60 free spaces in all).

Điểm đáng chú ý của bữa tối

No dinner is served — the rating reflects eating out. Every plan on the main booking sites is room-only, even though the official site still shows a kaiseki menu. Sushi, set-meal, pizza, curry, burger and izakaya places are a few minutes' walk away, but a March 2026 guest found their chosen restaurant closed and ended up at a burger chain by the station, and a September 2026 guest staying on a Sunday nearly went without — check opening hours ahead. Others bring food back from the FamilyMart (3 minutes' walk) or a supermarket a short drive away. The inn has added a lobby draft-beer server; a July 2026 blogger paid ¥1,000 for two drinks and a snack.

Onsen và thư giãn: thực tế ra sao

Loại nước

The inn's own source of weakly alkaline simple spring (pH 8.2). According to the inn's published data it emerges at 26.5°C and is boiler-heated to about 40°C and recirculated through filters — not free-flowing.

Sự riêng tư và không gian

Two single-sex baths, Tonoyu (men) and Himeyu (women), each with a tall-ceilinged indoor bath with a granite tub, an open-air bath and a dry sauna with an outdoor cooling area, renewed in June 2025; the cold plunge is unchilled spring water and feels lukewarm. The indoor bath is open 13:00–9:30, overnight included; the open-air bath and sauna 13:00–23:00 and 6:00–9:30. You walk down stairs from the changing room to the bath. No private baths. Day visitors (¥1,000) come 13:00–22:00 and 7:00–9:30. Guests love the soft, slippery water but some find the indoor bath hot and the washing stations few, and in November 2025 the showers barely ran.

Lưu ý và những điều tinh tế

  1. 01

Check-in 15:00 (last arrival 22:00), check-out 10:00. Room-only: no dinner, only the free light breakfast. A bathing tax of ¥150 per adult is extra.

  2. 02

The inn closes for maintenance about once a month — announced dates are 13 October, 25 November and 15 December 2026, and 14 January and 16 February 2027 — and the baths may open later than usual the next day.

  3. 03

Cancellation: 30% from 5 days before, 50% the day before, 100% on the day or for no-shows; some plans set their own terms.

  4. 04

Stairs lead down to the baths and the building is old; there is a lift and wheelchairs can be borrowed if you call ahead. In summer 2026 guests found the corridors and lift very hot.

  5. 05

Children are welcome: a family plan lets young children share a bed free, and day bathing costs ¥500 for primary-school children.
