Đánh giá chung của du khách Nhật

A family-run gorge-side inn at the gateway to Shiobara, loved for charcoal irori dinners, warm service and free-flowing water in every bath — but the famous riverside baths sit about 300 steps below, are mostly mixed-bathing, and two of the four are closed until about 2028

Yumori Tanakaya (founded in 1884, now run by the fourth generation) is the only inn at Ōami, the first of Shiobara's 'eleven springs' as you drive up the Hōki gorge. It has about 20 rooms, half of them with their own free-flowing onsen tub, and three kinds of bathing: a top-floor bath with a jacuzzi, a lukewarm lie-down bath and a low-temperature sauna; a hinoki 'gorge bath' about 20 steps down; and the riverside nōten-buro roughly 300 steps (the inn also says 320) below the road. The water comes from the inn's own three sources and is a colourless sodium-calcium sulphate spring that is licensed for drinking. Evidence here is mainly booking-site reviews plus one independent blog (August 2024): Japanese guests rate it 4.6 across 1,704 Jalan reviews (dinner and service 4.7) and 4.35 across 515 on Rakuten Travel. 2026 reviewers praise the irori robata dinner, where staff grill Tochigi wagyu, pork, river fish and vegetables in front of you; attentive staff, including the okami who waves guests off; and riverside bathing that some call unforgettable. The catches are consistent: the climb back up is hard (several older guests gave up), the riverside baths are mixed apart from the women-only Bijin-yu and need a towel or bathing wrap, and the Kawara-no-yu and Iwama-no-yu pools have been shut since February 2026 for about two years because of dam releases upstream. Other 2026 complaints: dated fittings and an old main bath, only two dryer stations in the women's changing room, cigarette smoke drifting into one view bath, small flies, and menu items swapped without notice. Two-meal stays reviewed in 2026 cost about ¥16,000–30,000+ per person; rooms with an open-air bath run from ¥48,550 per person.

Hướng dẫn chọn phòng

Nên chọn

  • Type C rooms with an in-room onsen view bath (源泉かけ流し 温泉内風呂・次の間付客室, 5F, about 46㎡)

The sweet spot: a 12.5-tatami main room plus a 6-tatami side room, non-smoking, with a free-flowing onsen tub by the window, installed in May 2018. Official rates run from ¥24,550 per person (off-peak weekday, two sharing) to ¥36,450 in peak season, and dinner is the top 'matsu' grade, robata or kaiseki. A May 2026 guest said the room felt clean and comfortable, but an April 2026 guest warned that the in-room tubs have an overflow hole high on the side, so you may only sit half-immersed. Type D (6F, about 26㎡, one 8-tatami corner room for two adults only, no children of primary age or under) is a cheaper way to get an in-room onsen.

  • Type A top-floor special rooms with an open-air bath, Sōkei (蒼景) and Kakei (佳景), 7F

The inn's flagship: Sōkei is about 68㎡ plus a 16㎡ balcony, with a 12.5-tatami main room, a 6-tatami side room, a sitting room, a tea room and a stone open-air tub of free-flowing water. Guests get the private lounge (opened April 2022, with a bar). A September 2026 repeat guest compared Sōkei to a state guest room, and a February 2026 guest loved the open-air bath, though the inn admits it is chilly when it snows. Since 3 September 2026 each room has its own rate: Sōkei from ¥48,550 per person off-peak up to ¥98,050 in peak season. The Type B 'modern special room' (5F, about 58㎡, barrier-free, semi-double twins, window-side onsen bath) is the other premium choice; an August 2026 guest whose parent uses a wheelchair called it a rare find.

Nên tránh

  • Type E unrenovated standard rooms (未改修 スタンダード和室, 30㎡), and anyone sensitive to smoke

The cheapest rooms (from ¥15,650 per person off-peak) are a 10-tatami room with a window-side engawa but no onsen tub, an old three-in-one unit bath with a very small toilet, a step at the entrance and smoking allowed. If you want the robata dinner in a Type E room, there is a surcharge. In April 2026 a guest in a renovated room smelled cigarette smoke drifting into the view bath through an open window. Other 2026 notes: a frosted-glass toilet that can be seen through, worn fittings, and a guest who booked a smaller room on a second visit and found it too cramped for a lazy onsen stay.

Nhận định về bữa sáng

4.3/5

A Japanese set breakfast in the dining hall, partly buffet since April 2023: Tochigi Koshihikari rice, additive-free Aizu miso soup, beef tendon simmered with local daikon, yudōfu, grilled salmon, fuki-miso, pickles and Senbonmatsu Farm yoghurt, with Nasushiobara milk and orange juice on the buffet. Rated 4.5 on Jalan and 4.43 on Rakuten; most 2026 guests found it generous, though one called it 'ordinary'. No room service and no Western option.

Do the riverside baths early, in daylight and before you drink: they are open 15:00–22:00 and 6:00–9:00, close without notice when it drops below 10°C, in rain or when the river is high, and have no washing area. A February 2026 guest rested ten minutes on the way up and advised no alcohol and bringing water. There is drinking-onsen water at the entrance, which a March 2026 guest was glad of after the climb. The hinoki gorge bath is free to use unreserved earlier in the evening and can be hired privately from 19:30 to 22:45 (45 minutes, ¥2,200, booked in order of check-in).

Điểm đáng chú ý của bữa tối

4.6/5

The signature is the robata dinner around sunken charcoal hearths, limited to eight groups a night (start times 18:00, 18:30 or 19:00), with Nasu-area wagyu, Gunji Farm pork, river fish and seasonal vegetables grilled by staff who time each skewer and slide the meat off for you; an August 2026 annual repeat guest singled out the closing shamo-chicken dumpling soup. The hall has no private rooms, and the inn warns it gets very hot in summer because the charcoal beats the air conditioning. Robata is meat- and mushroom-based with no individual allergy changes, so choose kaiseki if you have allergies. Kaiseki is served in your room for two people only, otherwise in a separate room. You cannot switch between kaiseki and robata on the day (call by 16:00 three days before). Dinner scores 4.7 on Jalan and 4.52 on Rakuten. 2026 complaints: a February couple found the robata too much food, a September guest wanted a little more, and a June guest was disappointed when the fugu tempura and duck hotpot on the menu were replaced because of supply. Outside food and drink are not allowed.

Onsen và thư giãn: thực tế ra sao

Loại nước

Sodium-calcium sulphate spring (old name bōshō-sen): hypotonic, neutral (pH 7.2), 61.7°C at source, colourless and almost odourless, from three of the inn's own sources (200 L/min on the analysis page). The inn and Jalan describe every bath, including the in-room tubs, as 100% free-flowing natural hot spring (源泉掛け流し). The water is licensed by the prefectural health office for drinking. Guests describe it as warming and gentle, and one May 2026 reviewer called it silky (torotoro).

Sự riêng tư và không gian

Separate men's and women's baths on the top floor (hot, medium-hot jacuzzi and lukewarm lie-down tubs plus a low-temperature sauna, with mountain views); the hinoki gorge bath about 20 steps down; and the riverside nōten-buro roughly 300 steps below, across the old road. Down by the river, Sengō-yu is mixed, Bijin-yu is women-only (a 2026 guest appreciated the changing area now screened from view), and the mixed Kawara-no-yu and Iwama-no-yu are closed from 10 February 2026 until about February 2028 because of discharge from the Hōki River dam. Everyone of primary-school age or older must wear a bath towel (free to rent), a bathing wrap or a swimsuit in the riverside baths. Ten rooms have their own free-flowing tubs. A March 2026 guest noted only two dryer stations in a busy women's changing room, so bring your own dryer.

Quy định về hình xăm

Not accepted: the official site and Jalan say guests with tattoos (including fashion and one-point tattoos) or tattoo stickers may not use the baths.

Lưu ý và những điều tinh tế

  1. 01

The riverside baths mean about 300 steep steps each way (the inn says about 300, and 320 elsewhere). One guest counted 640 steps and about an hour for the round trip. Signs along the way cheer you on, and there are rest spots, but in 2026 several guests in their 60s and 70s turned back or skipped it. The top-floor bath, gorge bath and in-room tubs are the fall-back.

  2. 02

Check-in is 15:00–18:00 (dinner can't be served if you arrive after 19:00), check-out 10:00 (11:00 for web members). A May 2026 guest had to wait in the car until 15:00; early entry from 14:00 costs ¥4,400 per room if you ask the day before. The front door is locked at 23:00.

  3. 03

Getting there: the JR bus from Nasu-Shiobara Station stops right outside (Shiobara-Ōami). The inn's shuttle leaves Nasu-Shiobara west exit once a day at 15:30 (back at 10:15), must be booked by phone the day before, and costs ¥1,100 per group each way for bookings made from 9 July 2026. There are 30 free parking spaces, the inn now sits on the old road since the Route 400 bypass opened, and the nearest convenience store is about 10 minutes away by car.

  4. 04

On 2 October 2026 the inn warned that its booking-management system provider (TEMAIRAZU) had been hacked, which may have exposed some guests' names, contacts and booking details for reservations made up to 21 September 2026. Ignore any WhatsApp, SMS or email asking you to 'confirm' a booking or re-enter card details, and contact the inn directly.

  5. 05

One April 2026 guest wished some staff's Japanese were stronger, while others praised the staff's care. Families are welcome (children's meals and baby equipment on loan), but Type B modern and Type D rooms do not take children of primary-school age or younger. The inn has scheduled closure days, so check the calendar.
