A 1923 inn whose own spring is piped 5.4 km from beside the Imperial Villa's source and never heated or recirculated, with a forest-ringed open-air bath of about 30 tatami and well-loved kaiseki — but 2026 reviews flag scalding in-room tubs, ageing fittings, empty lounge bottles and thin staffing
Sanraku opened in 1923, when its founder piped water 5.4 km from springs in the Ōmaru valley — next to the Nasu Imperial Villa's own source — down to this site on the Nasu slope. The inn says the then Crown Prince, later Emperor Shōwa, liked its view over the Nasunogahara plain so much that the villa was planned in Nasu, and Yosano Akiko wrote poems here. Now run by the Ken Hotels group, it has 39 rooms in three wings. The draw is the water: a neutral simple spring mixed from 16 sources, gravity-fed at about 800 litres a minute and, the inn says, never heated, recirculated or filtered — in the large and small open-air baths under the maples and in the rooms with private baths. Japanese guests rate it 4.67 across 389 reviews on one major site (dinner 4.71, baths 4.70), 4.6 across 422 on another and 4.33 across 91 on a third, where baths score 4.62 but facilities only 4.09. Bloggers from 2024 to 2026 praise the 'pond-like' outdoor bath, a nakai assigned to each room, kaiseki that one March 2025 visitor called the best food of any inn that year, and free sake and wine in the lounge from 16:00 to 18:00. The catches, mostly dated 2025–2026: a big house that can feel crowded in the lounge and corridors, lounge bottles left empty, in-room tubs too hot to use without adding water (scald-level in one September 2026 review), worn fittings and sticking bath doors, slips such as breakfast rice not yet cooked, thin staffing, no vending machines, and a stay of about ¥200,000 for two that one August 2026 guest found poor value. Two-meal rates start around ¥53,600–65,300 for two in a standard room; rooms with private baths cost much more.

Garden open-air-bath rooms in the West wing — Kaede (楓) 112, Keyaki (欅) 114, Nara (楢) 115 and, per a 2026 blog, the corner room Yanagi (柳) 116
Each has its own free-flowing outdoor tub and a foot bath on the engawa, drained and refilled daily; they're for two adults only. A couple staying on 4 September 2026 found 116 brighter and newer (double basins, a ReFa dryer, POLA toiletries) but its Shigaraki tub fits one and runs hot enough to need tap water, with some road noise; next-door 115 has a tub for two with temperature set by the front desk and a better garden view, but a darker washroom and a foot bath usable only with the window open. One August 2026 guest who paid about ¥200,000 for two found the room small and the tub cramped.
Sukiya-style superior Japanese rooms (East wing), for families
Two connected rooms (10 + 4.5 or 12.5 + 3 tatami) for up to four, closest to the shared baths, and eligible for the private dining rooms. A July 2024 blogger dined in a private room at Sansuitei and loved the green garden views; a party of four paid ¥96,468 with two meals in October 2025 for the room Rindō, with in-room meals, two washbasins and a 'retro' bath. 2026 reviews of this type mention a bad smell from the in-room bath, worn fittings and the way futons were laid.
Nên tránh
Fuyō (ふよう) 201, the semi-open-air-bath suite
Renovated in 2017 with a queen bed, but a September 2026 guest found its in-room bath close to 50°C with no way to cool it, and an August 2026 guest found a large, wasted entrance space, a tub too tight for two, a fixed flow that can't be reduced and a view of nothing but the lower roof and trees. Standard West-wing rooms are 10 tatami without an anteroom; meals there are served in the room, not in the private dining rooms.

Tìm hiểu kỹ về ẩm thực
Nhận định về bữa sáng
4.4/5Japanese breakfast at 8:00 or 8:30, in your room or the private dining room, with a choice of hot pot such as yuba shabu-shabu or chicken tsukune and plenty of rice-friendly side dishes — widely liked, though one September 2026 guest was served before the rice had finished cooking
Request the free shuttle when booking — there's one run, 14:40 from Nasu-Shiobara Station's west exit and 10:45 back. Head to the lounge early in the 16:00–18:00 free-drink window: several guests in 2025–2026 found the wine and sake gone. There are no vending machines (the nearest convenience store is about 1 km away) and you can't bring your own drinks. Extras such as yuba sashimi or abalone can be ordered a week ahead.
Điểm đáng chú ý của bữa tối
4.5/5A monthly kaiseki at 18:00 or 18:30, served in your room or in the private rooms of the Sansuitei dining house (bath rooms, view rooms and East-wing superior rooms). In March 2025 a blogger on a ¥25,000-per-person discounted plan had an uguisu soup with snow crab, tuna and pen-shell sashimi, stone-grilled wagyu and crab rice, and ranked it first for food among that year's inns; a September 2026 menu brought matsutake soup, charcoal-grilled Tochigi ayu, wagyu with abalone and corn rice. A 2026 reviewer noted a new head chef. Critics found portions small (August 2026) or the food 'not tasty' (September 2026).
Onsen và thư giãn: thực tế ra sao
The inn's own mixed spring (Sanraku sources No. 1–15 plus Hachiman), a neutral simple spring (pH 7.4, 64.6°C at source, 817 L/min in a 2017 analysis), gravity-fed 5.4 km from the Ōmaru valley beside the Imperial Villa's source and arriving at about 50°C. The inn says it is never heated, recirculated or filtered, in both the shared and in-room baths (drained and refilled daily); guests often add tap water to cool the in-room tubs.
Two bath suites — one with the big open-air bath of about 30 tatami under a canopy of maples, the other with a smaller outdoor tub and an arbour, each with a granite indoor bath — swap between men and women (open 15:00–1:00 and 5:00–10:00). There's no private family bath, no day-visitor bathing and no photography. A September 2026 blogger had the big bath alone after breakfast; a March 2025 guest found the 40-room house crowded and the neutral water drying on the skin. Four room types have their own free-flowing open-air or semi-open-air baths.

Lưu ý và những điều tinh tế

Check-in 15:00, check-out 10:30. The inn asks dinner guests to check in by 18:00; the last dinner start is 19:00 (19:30 if unavoidably delayed). Online bookings need two or more people per room — call for solo stays.
- 02
Not barrier-free: there are no accessible rooms and some steps inside, though two wheelchairs can be borrowed and rooms near the lift can be requested.
- 03
Children are welcome except in the West-wing garden-bath rooms (adults only); upper primary-school children pay 70% and younger ones 50%, and under-3s without meals or bedding stay free.
- 04
Pets can't stay in rooms, but guests' dogs board free at the inn's own pet hotel on the grounds, Villa du One, with a webcam.
- 05
From 1 October 2026 Nasu town charges an accommodation tax of ¥100–3,000 per person per night, collected at check-in. Snow and ice are likely from December to early March — winter tyres or chains are essential.
