Đánh giá chung của du khách Nhật

Higashi-Naruko's oldest inn (founded 1784): two free-flowing springs, including its own dark, oily-scented 'Furōsen' bath you can take privately for free, at self-catering prices — but the Shōwa-era building is cluttered and run largely by the owner alone

Kanshichiyu says it was founded in 1784, which makes it the oldest inn in Higashi-Naruko, and it still keeps a fukusa cloth it was given by the Date lords. The seventh-generation owner, who trained at Kyoto's Tawaraya, runs it as a tōji (bathing-cure) inn with about 30 tatami rooms in two Shōwa-era wings and a shared kitchen. The draw is the water. The large baths take Higashi-Naruko's shared Akayu supply, with about 10% water added to cool it. The small 'Furōsen' bath uses the inn's own Kanshichi spring, 100% free-flowing: tea- to cola-dark, full of black yunohana and smelling faintly of oil. When no one is in it, you can take it privately for free. Japanese guests rate it 3.9 across 315 reviews on one major site (baths 4.2, service 4.3) and 3.63 across 345 on another. Nearly every review mentions the owner: station pick-ups, lifts to restaurants and the convenience store, chatty welcomes. Bloggers who stayed in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025 loved the springs and the prices but described rubbish bags and junk in the corridors and kitchen, torn shoji, dusty changing rooms, a rain-stained room, and a 2023 check-in where they waited an hour for the owner. Reviews from 2025–2026 repeat the pattern: cleanliness scores of 3.3 and 3.23, one tub sometimes left empty, lukewarm water in winter, tobacco smells, stink bugs. Dinners served in your room are simple. Rates run about ¥9,900–11,550 per person with two meals, or from ¥4,400 self-catering.

Hướng dẫn chọn phòng

Nên chọn

  • Type A (6 tatami) or B (8 tatami) rooms with a toilet and Wi-Fi

The better rooms have a washlet toilet, a small fridge, a safe and Wi-Fi; a January 2026 reviewer noted that the newer wing has Wi-Fi, and an August 2026 guest found the room thoroughly cleaned. Two-meal rates are ¥11,550 per person, compared with ¥9,900 for a room without a toilet. Several bloggers and reviewers in 2024–2026 were upgraded for free on arrival. A 2023 couple in 8-tatami Room 308 paid ¥11,000 each with two meals, but found no washbasin and no tissues.

  • Rooms on the railway side, for train lovers

The JR Rikuu East Line passes about 15 m from the back windows. 2026 guests enjoyed watching the trains with the hills behind and said services stop by about 21:00. If you're a light sleeper, a September 2026 solo guest recommends a road-side room, which was quiet.

Nên tránh

  • Type C/D rooms (no toilet, no Wi-Fi, some without air conditioning) and the 'self' plans

The cheapest plans come without amenities: you lay your own futon and leave it out when you go, and use shared toilets. Bloggers in 2022–2025 reported a broken door knob, single-glazed windows that stream with condensation in winter, small kerosene fan heaters, and worn shoji, wallpaper and tatami. Smoking rooms exist, and an August 2026 family found theirs smelled of tobacco and was dusty in the corners. A 2023 room had a rain-damaged, sunken patch of tatami.

Nhận định về bữa sáng

3.6/5

A simple Japanese breakfast brought to your room, served from 8:00 at the earliest (a 2026 guest notes this is too late for early departures). Scores are middling: 3.6 on one site and 3.72 on another

To take the Furōsen bath privately, borrow the 'reserved' board from the front desk and stand it at the door. It's free and lasts about 30 minutes, but there's no lock, and the inn may refuse private use at New Year and Golden Week. Tell the owner your arrival time and you may be picked up at Naruko-Gotenyu or Naruko-Onsen Station, and dropped at restaurants or the convenience store about 1 km away. Bring cash and tissues: one booking site says credit cards aren't accepted at the inn, though some online plans can be prepaid by card. In 2023, staying on until 14:00 cost just ¥550.

Điểm đáng chú ý của bữa tối

3.5/5

Home-style local dishes brought to your room by the owner. A March 2026 dinner was sashimi ('glistening, even this far into the mountains') and katsu-ni, and a 2025 guest called the portions generous. Others find it plain, and dinner scores 3.5 and 3.71 on the two major sites. A 2023 blogger found the miso soup tasted instant and the hotpot shown online missing. Many guests skip meals and cook in the shared third-floor kitchen, which has free burners, a microwave and a fridge. Utensils and cleanliness there drew complaints in 2024–2025, and a December 2025 guest found no pots or seasonings.

Onsen và thư giãn: thực tế ra sao

Loại nước

Two springs, both free-flowing with no recirculation. The large baths use a mix of Higashi-Naruko's shared Arai No. 2 and No. 5 sources (the Akayu supply). This is a sodium bicarbonate–chloride spring, 66.4°C at source and pH 7.4, and per the inn's posted label about 10% water is added to cool it; the official site also lists sulphate. The small Furōsen bath uses the inn's own Kanshichi source, a sodium bicarbonate spring at 49.0°C and pH 6.9, 100% free-flowing. Both are brownish-black with black yunohana and a woody, oily or 'naphtha' scent.

Sự riêng tư và không gian

Two pairs of separate men's and women's indoor baths, open 24 hours except during cleaning, with no outdoor bath and no views. The large bath has a roughly 4 × 2.5 m tub and four showers. Its smaller second tub was empty during stays in 2022, 2024 and December 2025, and in March 2026 only one bath was filled on a weekday. The Furōsen is about 3 × 2 m, with one shower and no mirror or dryer. Guests often have the baths to themselves, but day visitors come in until late. Opinion on temperature varies: some found the water hot, many found it lukewarm, especially in winter. Changing rooms were dusty in 2025.

Quy định về hình xăm

No policy found on the official site or Japanese booking sites — contact the inn. The Furōsen bath can be taken privately for free when no one else is using it.

Lưu ý và những điều tinh tế

  1. 01

Check-in 14:00, check-out 10:00. Late-arrival 'self' plans allow check-in until midnight. In 2023 a couple arriving at 14:00 waited about an hour for the owner, so call ahead with your arrival time.

  2. 02

The owner runs the inn largely alone. From 2023 to 2026, guests repeatedly reported rubbish bags and clutter in corridors, stairwells and the kitchen, torn shoji and patchy cleaning. Fans of tōji inns forgive it; others don't.

  3. 03

Air conditioning runs only in set hours (16:00–23:00 in 2024, 16:00–midnight in August 2026), with fans during the day; some summer-plan rooms have none. In winter, heating is by kerosene fan heater.

  4. 04

Cancellation: 30% two days before, 50% the day before, 80% on the day, 100% for no-shows. Children: 70% of the adult rate for primary-school age, 50% for preschoolers with meals and bedding, free under 2. There's a kids' corner on the ground floor.

  5. 05

Parking is free but in a covered lot a few minutes' walk away that guests find hard to locate, and few shops or restaurants nearby open in the evening. By train, take the Tōhoku Shinkansen to Furukawa, then the Rikuu East Line (about 45 minutes) to Naruko-Gotenyu.
