Đánh giá chung của du khách Nhật

A Meiji-era inn by Ikaho's stone steps where every bath — even the seven in-room tubs — runs free-flowing 'golden' water, with an okami at every dinner table and a breakfast hall full of mountains; but it's a big, busy 74-room house with banquet-hall dinners and view-less cheaper rooms

Moriaki Ryokan opened in 1868 on Ikaho's stone steps and later moved a short walk away to its present hillside site; the name comes from the third-generation owner, Morita Akisaburō. The poet Noguchi Ujō, who wrote the children's songs 'Shabondama' and 'Nanatsu no Ko', made it a regular base and wrote a local song here — the handwritten text is displayed on the way in from the lobby, and Ujō's songs play softly in the halls. Today it's a 74-room, eight-storey house of mostly tatami rooms, three minutes from the steps. The draw is the water: Moriaki is one of nine inns holding rights to Ikaho's brown 'golden' Kogane-no-yu, and every bath — two open-air baths, the large indoor bath, a private bath and seven rooms with their own tubs — runs it free-flowing with no added water, though heated, because the spring cools on its 1 km journey. Japanese guests rate it 4.3 across 4,960 reviews on one major site (baths 4.5, service 4.4) and 4.27 across more than 2,300 on another. Blogs from 2024 to 2026 and recent reviewers praise the okami's greeting at every dinner table, generous kaiseki with Jōshū beef, a buffet breakfast with a sweeping mountain view, surprise birthday cakes and good value. The catches: it's a big, busy house — dinner is mostly in open banquet halls and courses can come fast, the short breakfast window gets crowded, and the open-air and indoor baths sit apart on the same floor, with few showers at the open-air one. Cheaper low-floor rooms may look onto old buildings, walls are thin, and 2026 reviews mention dated bathrooms and a forgotten in-room breakfast. Two-meal stays run about ¥17,000–30,000 per person; rooms with their own onsen bath cost more.

Hướng dẫn chọn phòng

Nên chọn

  • The 'Yu' rooms on the 4th floor with their own free-flowing onsen bath — Mihō, Shiun/Kōun, Taiju/Hōgetsu — or the Onoko/Komochi suites with a hinoki semi-open-air bath

The only way to get Kogane-no-yu to yourself without paying by the hour: the premium suite Mihō (up to 6 people) looks over the Jōshū mountains and the stone steps, Shiun and Kōun face the steps, and Taiju's bath faces the inn's centuries-old zelkova. Most are barrier-free Japanese-Western rooms with twin beds. An October 2026 guest in a junior suite found it freshly renovated and spotless, and a September 2026 guest on a third stay loved the room's open-air bath — though the in-room breakfast they'd ordered never arrived and they were sent to the buffet.

  • 6th-floor garden rooms, or the 8th-floor family rooms such as Matsukaze

The five 10-tatami rooms on the 6th floor each have a small private garden off the window-side sitting area with the mountains beyond — an October 2026 family called the size 'just right' and loved the garden and the view of the steps. On the top floor, Matsukaze (23 tatami over three rooms, up to 9) took a group of 12 including three small children in a 2024 family blog, who loved its loop layout and mountain views, though the bathroom showed its age.

Nên tránh

  • Low-floor standard rooms and twins (1st–3rd floors)

An October 2026 guest booked a 3rd-floor twin for a birthday and found the window facing a grimy old building with no view at all, at the normal price; a September 2026 family in a 1st-floor room also had no view. The 1st-floor 8-tatami rooms and twins and some standard 10-tatami rooms have unit baths, and 2026 reviewers mention thin walls, a weak toilet fan, a cramped toilet in a corner room and dim mirror lighting. Ask for an upper floor if the view matters.

Nhận định về bữa sáng

4.2/5

A Japanese-Western buffet in the 5th-floor Kanzan hall (from 7:30, closing at 9:00), with a panoramic view of the Jōshū mountains from the window counter — braised pork, nikujaga and Gunma's yaki-manjū are favourites, though the short window makes it crowded, and allergy requests can't be handled at breakfast

You can arrive from 13:00 to leave bags and the car (staff valet it to lots 300–500 m away and drive you back on departure); a free pick-up runs from the nearest bus stops after 13:00 — just phone on arrival. Don't follow sat-nav blindly: an October 2026 guest was routed into an extremely narrow lane. The private bath Keyaki-no-yu (¥3,850 for 50 minutes, towels and water included) is booked first-come by phone or email. In-house alcohol is pricey; a 2025 blogger suggests the convenience store at the foot of the steps.

Điểm đáng chú ý của bữa tối

4.3/5

A per-person kaiseki built around Jōshū beef and seasonal Gunma produce, served in the 4th-floor banquet halls (open rooms without partitions, an August 2026 guest noted) or, on in-room-dining plans for certain rooms, in your room; hot dishes like chawanmushi arrive in sequence. Bloggers from 2025–2026 found it plentiful — 'udon, then rice as well' — praised a dobin-mushi broth and noted the okami stopping at each table. Upgraded plans and extras include Jōshū beef steak or shabu-shabu. Critics found the flavours a little strong, the courses rushed, portions too big ('a smaller plan would be welcome'), or simply 'worth the price, no more'. Allergy requests need three days' notice.

Onsen và thư giãn: thực tế ra sao

Loại nước

Ikaho's Kogane-no-yu ('golden water'), a calcium-sodium sulfate-bicarbonate-chloride spring (about pH 6.4) that turns brown as its iron oxidises. It comes from the source near Kajika Bridge through the town's centuries-old komaguchi distribution system, shared among nine rights-holding inns. The inn says every bath is free-flowing with no added water, but heated: the spring leaves the source at about 40–42°C and arrives at 38–39°C after roughly 1 km. Disinfection is not mentioned.

Sự riêng tư và không gian

All the baths are on the 2nd floor but apart from one another: two open-air baths, Ujō-no-yu, each with a small indoor tub, swap between men and women around 24:00; the stone-built large bath, Jizō-no-yu, has fixed men's and women's sides — so trying both means changing in between, a 2024 blogger warned. The private bath Keyaki-no-yu, added in 2023, sits under a zelkova said to be 400 years old and is lit up at night. Baths are open 15:00–9:00 and drained and cleaned daily, so there's no late-morning soak. Guests praise the renovated changing rooms and KINUJO hair dryers, and often had the baths to themselves; complaints are too few showers at the open-air baths and a temperature some find lukewarm (others, hot). Day visitors are admitted 15:00–18:00.

Quy định về hình xăm

Explicit: guests with tattoos (including fashion tattoos and cover stickers) may not use the shared large and open-air baths. The inn suggests the paid private bath or a room with its own onsen bath instead.

Lưu ý và những điều tinh tế

  1. 01

Check-in 15:00 (no early check-in, but bags and cars are taken from 13:00), check-out 10:00; late check-out costs ¥3,300 an hour, up to 12:00. On plans with dinner, check in by 18:00.

  2. 02

Parking is free but mostly off-site, 300–500 m away; staff move your car for you, and the lanes up to the inn are steep and narrow.

  3. 03

Cancellation charges start three days before arrival. The official site promises its lowest rate (with extra member discounts) and takes online bookings about six months ahead.

  4. 04

Families are well catered for: primary-school children pay 70% of the adult rate, there are children's meals and baby gear, and seven universal-design rooms — though the old building can't remove every step.

  5. 05

It's a large, popular house: expect busy dinner halls, a wait for the lifts and a crowded breakfast at peak times, and book a higher-floor or onsen room if a view or quiet matters.
