A 69-room Awara inn with free drinks from afternoon to 22:00 and 36 rooms with their own onsen tub, which hosted the Ryūō shogi title match two years running — but the water is heated and recirculated, only one of the two big baths has an outdoor tub, and school groups and banquets share the building
Mimatsu opened as a small restaurant-inn in 1967 and moved to its present site in 1982. Today it has 69 rooms, and 36 of them have their own open-air onsen tub: 28 rooms on the fourth and fifth floors, added in 2005–06, and the eight-suite annex Biyu, opened in 2008, which has its own front desk and lounge. In October 2024 and again in October 2025 the inn hosted Game 2 of the Ryūō shogi title match, with Sota Fujii defending the title. Since April 2024 every guest gets free drinks: soft drinks and sweets in the lobby from 14:00, draft beer, wine and local sake from 17:00 to 22:00, and free drinks with dinner. Japanese guests rate it 4.6 across 3,375 Jalan reviews and 4.39 across 2,890 on Rakuten Travel. Five independent bloggers who stayed between July 2024 and June 2026 praised the free drinks, the koi garden, the in-room baths (just the right temperature, one blogger found) and the Fukui rice. The catches: the inn's Jalan listing says the water is heated and recirculated through filters. The domed Taiyōden bath has the only shared outdoor tub. The baths for men and women swap between evening and morning sessions, alternating by month, so in any given month one side can use the outdoor tub only in the morning. Many 2026 reviewers were disappointed by this. Other 2026 complaints include salty, small or 'pre-plated' dinners in a noisy hall, older unrenovated rooms, hair left in a renovated room, a musty Biyu suite with insects, thin walls, solar panels in the view, and slow check-in. Two-meal stays reviewed on Jalan in 2026 mostly cost ¥22,000–30,000 per person, and Biyu more than ¥30,000.

Onsen open-air bath rooms on the 4F 'Yūyū' and 5F 'Yōyō' floors — Japanese (10 or 12.5 tatami) or Western twin with low 'wa-beds', about 38㎡
The reason most bloggers and reviewers book here: 28 rooms, each with a hinoki or glazed-ceramic tub on its own terrace, filled with the inn's spring water and usable at any hour. Next to the tub there's a shower room rather than an indoor bath. You can't choose the tub type. Bloggers stayed in these rooms in late 2024 and in 2025, and one of them soaked again and again until check-out, finding the temperature just right. 2026 reviewers mention that the temperature adjusts automatically and that the tub is big enough for two. The views are of the garden or rice fields. In August 2026, though, a guest in a fifth-floor open-air twin found solar panels filling half the view and was kept awake through thin walls. A July 2026 party of three found the room cramped, with no chairs. Two rooms can be connected for larger groups.
Annex Biyu (別邸 美悠) — 8 suites with an onsen open-air bath, 63–65㎡
The quietest option, with its own check-in desk and a private lounge (free alcohol and snacks 14:00–22:00 and 7:00–12:00), drinks in the room fridge, and dinner and breakfast served in your room. The four garden-side suites (Matsu, Sakura, Tsubaki, Yukiyanagi) look over the koi garden, with Shigaraki-ware tubs and massage beds. The four courtyard-side suites (Yamabuki, Nanten, Hanamizuki, Jinchōge) have hinoki, stone or rock tubs. Every suite has two toilets and two washbasins. A solo guest on Rakuten Travel loved the red ceramic tub in Matsu. In August 2026, a family travelling with a wheelchair user praised the care, and another guest enjoyed an in-room French course called 'Yuin', launched in spring 2026. On the downside, one July 2026 guest found the suite musty and the tub plagued by insects and bees, a June guest saw a centipede in the corridor, and a September repeat guest waited with ten others at an unstaffed desk before the 14:00 check-in.
Nên tránh
Older unrenovated rooms (including the economy 12.5-tatami Japanese rooms) and 9㎡ singles; renovated 'Ziyu' rooms have no onsen tub
On Ikyu the cheapest Japanese rooms are described as 'Shōwa-style' rooms from the inn's early days. In July 2026 a guest found the cheapest room old though clean, and some open-air Japanese rooms haven't been renovated either: in June 2026 a guest in one found a slow-flushing toilet and a TV showing only NHK. The 9㎡ singles have no bath or shower, and a July 2026 solo guest found the washroom straight out of the Shōwa era. The 'Ziyu' rooms are the 2023 junior suite (78㎡) and the 39–44㎡ Japanese-modern rooms opened in 2024, with Simmons beds and a spacious ordinary bathroom. Guests found them clean and stylish, but they have no onsen tub. An August 2026 two-star review found long hairs all over one of these rooms, and a May 2026 guest complained of a TV mounted too high and a cramped toilet.

Nhận định về bữa sáng
4.2/5A Japanese set breakfast of grilled fish, several small seasonal dishes and Fukui's Ichihomare rice, with a self-serve corner of tomato curry, onsen eggs and natto. It's served in the same place as dinner, with free soft drinks. It's widely praised (4.5 on Jalan), and the curry is a blogger favourite, but in 2026 one guest found the dessert pineapple overripe and another found breakfast disappointing.
Arrive early to use the lobby drinks: soft drinks and sweets from 14:00 to 18:00, and beer, wine on tap, liqueurs, snacks and ice cream from 17:00 to 22:00. You can take drinks to your room. There's a soft-drink bar outside the baths. Bring your towels from the room, since the big baths have none and no valuables lockers, and pick up toothbrushes at the amenity corner near the front desk. A local market runs in the lobby each morning. Book the free station shuttle in advance. The shogi match room, Ryūyū, has been opened for tours on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays (¥2,000, booking by phone).
Điểm đáng chú ý của bữa tối
4.0/5A seasonal kaiseki that changes on the 15th of March, June, September and December, served in the Taihō hall (seats allocated by the inn). One winter 2024–25 menu included sashimi with sweet shrimp and yellowtail, snow crab steamed over the spring water, Wakasa-beef roast beef and Ichihomare rice. Wakasa-beef shabu-shabu plans are served in Kifūtei's 14 private rooms, and Biyu guests eat a separate kaiseki or the French 'Yuin' course in their suite. In season there are crab plans, and since August 2026 a plan sends you to the LULL restaurant in Mikuni for dinner. Free drinks come with dinner, and a few items cost extra. Diners praise the abalone, sashimi and rice. The complaints: in 2026 guests called dinner salty (March, May), 'pre-plated' (January), small (April, July) or not as good as before (September), and in June a guest found the hall noisy and canteen-like, with tabletop burners instead of hot dishes from the kitchen.
Onsen và thư giãn: thực tế ra sao
Awara Onsen water from the inn's own wells. The official site describes Awara's water as neutral to weakly alkaline sodium-calcium chloride water, colourless with a faint sulphur smell. The inn's Jalan listing says the water is heated and recirculated through filters. The official FAQ, asked whether the baths are free-flowing, says only that they use onsen water, and a 2025 blogger's photo caption notes that the room-tub water circulates constantly.
There are two big baths. Taiyōden (1989) is a huge domed bath with an outdoor 'view' tub beside a waterfall, and Meigetsuden has a round indoor tub on Indian sandstone and no outdoor tub. Each day the two sides swap between the evening session (14:00–24:00) and the morning session (4:00–9:30), and which side gets which depends on whether the month is odd or even (a timetable in place since 1 October 2026). So for a whole month, one side gets the outdoor tub only in the morning. Many 2026 guests were disappointed by this, and in June 2026 one reported that the outdoor tub could be seen from rooms. Other complaints: a mossy outdoor tub (May 2026), very hot water (July 2024 and May 2026), and a ramp too steep for a wheelchair (July 2026). Day visitors may use the baths from 14:00 to 18:00, and student groups book them for some evening hours (e.g. 20–22 October 2026). For real privacy, book one of the 36 rooms with their own onsen tub. There's no private-hire bath.

Check-in is from 15:00 (Biyu guests report 14:00) and check-out is 10:00. Cancellation for up to 14 people: 10% from 5 days before, 30% from 3 days, 50% from 2 days, 80% the day before and 100% on the day.
- 02
This is a big, busy house: 69 rooms, a 400-tatami banquet hall for 250, school trips, and baths open to day visitors. In 2026 guests mentioned banquet noise by the entrance, crying babies through thin walls and a crowded lobby bar. Biyu is the quiet corner.
- 03
From 1 October 2026 the two big baths swap by odd and even month. Check which bath you'll get in the evening if the shared outdoor tub matters to you.
- 04
The location is practical rather than scenic: near Mikuni boat-race course, shops and a drugstore, with rice fields and a solar farm outside. The inn runs a free shuttle (14:00–18:00 in, 9:00–12:00 out) from Awara-Onsen and Awara-Yunomachi stations. There are 100 free parking spaces and an EV charger.
- 05
Children are welcome. The inn provides children's yukata (90–130cm), baby chairs, a bath-side baby bed and children's meals. Children aged 7 or over, or taller than 120cm, may not use the baths of the opposite sex. Wheelchairs are lent free, and there's an ostomate-friendly toilet.

What to pack for a ryokan stay in Japan (and what the inn already gives you)
A ryokan packing list based on real inns: what a Japanese inn normally provides (yukata, towels, slippers, toiletries) and the exceptions our research records, what to wear with a yukata, socks for tatami rooms, a small bath bag for onsen towns, the things often missing (toothbrush, hair dryer, sockets, earplugs), cash for bath tax and bath passes, and how to travel light by sending your suitcase ahead.

No toothbrush at your hotel or ryokan in Japan? Why, and where to get one tonight
Since Japan's 2022 plastics law, many hotels and ryokan no longer leave free toothbrushes, razors, combs or hairbrushes in the room. Why it happens, how to ask at the front desk or amenity corner, what konbini, drugstores and 100-yen shops sell tonight, Amazon or Rakuten delivery to your inn or a konbini, and a small kit to pack next time.
