Higashiyama Onsen, Aizu-Wakamatsu, Fukushima — strung along the Yugawa stream beside Fushimi-ga-taki falls at the entrance to the spa town, about 10 minutes by car from central Aizu-Wakamatsu, with the 'Takinoyu-mae' bus stop at the door

Đánh giá chung của du khách Nhật

A big riverside inn on the spot where Higashiyama Onsen began, with open-air baths beside a floodlit waterfall, seven private baths and famous breakfast mochi — but the cheaper rooms are cramped, the building is full of steps, and 2026 reviews flag smells and patchy upkeep

Takinoyu stands where Higashiyama Onsen is said to have begun: according to the inn, the monk Gyōki found the spring about 1,300 years ago beside Fushimi-ga-taki, the broad waterfall right next to the building, and the inn itself has been running for more than 140 years. Its other name, Shōsuke no Yado, nods to Ohara Shōsuke of the folk song 'Aizu Bandaisan', whose stone bath is on display. Behind the old-inn entrance, the long riverside building has been heavily renovated: a sake-tasting corner, library and view foot bath in 2022, a new rooftop private bath in 2023, and eight fully redone 'Roman-tei' rooms in December 2024. Japanese guests rate it 4.41 across 4,178 reviews on one major site (baths 4.50) and 4.3 across 5,888 on another. Bloggers who stayed in 2022, 2023 and 2024, and dozens of 2026 reviewers, praise bathing right beside the floodlit falls; the free extras — matcha and yōkan on arrival, beer and soft-serve after the bath, a nightly projection-mapping show on the noh stage across the river; the Aizu kaiseki dinner of carp, horse sashimi and kozuyu soup; and above all the freshly pounded mochi at breakfast. The catch: this is a big, busy house of about 50 rooms. In 2026 reviews, guests on cheap 'leave the room to us' plans got rooms by the dining hall or with only a shower booth, and others mention musty or drain smells, dust and mould in bathrooms, summer humidity and insects, steps everywhere, distant car parks, no one at the desk to guide them, and dinners some found plain. Two-meal stays mostly run about ¥14,000–24,000 per person.

Hướng dẫn chọn phòng

Nên chọn

  • Musō-an (夢想庵), the view rooms near the lift

10–12 tatami on the upper floors with a hiba-wood bath, 5–10 m from the lift and, per the inn, the best view in the house: the noh stage, bamboo grove, Yugawa stream and Fushimi-ga-taki falls. It's one of the two room types for in-room dinner. A September 2026 guest chose a sixth-floor Musō-an with in-room dinner and praised the timing and warm dishes; another, on two nights of in-room dinner, found the sashimi slightly fishy on the second night.

  • Hanare Matsushimakaku (はなれ松島閣), the inn's suite wing

Ten architect- and designer-made suites of 45–120㎡ — eight Japanese-Western and two Japanese rooms — each with its own open-air bath (a semi-open bath in the Japanese rooms), a view terrace, a sound system and in-room or private-room dining. It is sold under its own name on some booking sites, but check-in is at the main front desk and the baths and facilities are shared. The inn doesn't say whether the in-room baths use spring water.

Nên tránh

  • 'Leave it to us' (おまかせ) and 'cramped 6-mat' discount plans, and Yumemi-tei standard rooms

The inn's own replies say these discount plans get rooms in 'worse conditions than usual' — next to the dining rooms, tucked away or older — with the simplest menu and no requests. Yumemi-tei rooms (8–10 tatami, or 6–8 with Japanese-style beds) have only a shower booth and sit 50–90 m from the lift; Mugen-tei family rooms have a bath but some don't face the stream and have dim lantern lighting. 2026 guests reported narrow entrances, a musty smell, dusty corners, mould at a basin, drain smells and a peeling ceiling — though others on the same plans got spacious, freshly renovated rooms.

Nhận định về bữa sáng

4.4/5

A chef-made set tray (7:30–9:30) plus a self-service corner of freshly pounded mochi — anko, kinako, zunda, walnut, natto, chestnut and ozōni — with imoni stew and fresh tofu; the most praised meal of the stay. The inn stresses the extras corner isn't an all-you-can-eat buffet, and one 2026 guest found dishes weren't refilled.

Book private baths online from 90 days ahead — first come, first served; 45 minutes from ¥3,000 plus tax unless your plan includes one, and the rooftop baths are reached by outdoor stairs, so wear your own shoes. Free matcha in the fourth-floor lounge runs 14:00–18:00, beer and soft-serve 15:00–19:00 only, so arrive early. A 2024 blogger watched the 21:00 projection show from the third-floor foot bath with sake from the coin-operated tasting server (5 coins for ¥1,650).

Điểm đáng chú ý của bữa tối

4.2/5

'Aizu kyōdo kaiseki' from 18:00 (last order 20:00), served in Ohara-tei (tables on tatami), the private rooms of Kaika-tei and Hana-mizuki, or in your room on Musō-an and Matsushimakaku plans. Blogs from 2023–2024 describe carp simmered and as 'arai', Okuaizu trout, yuba and horse sashimi, kozuyu, Fukushima beef shabu-shabu and steak, and soba with grated yam; extras include Aizu wagyu sushi (¥1,320) and horse yukke (¥1,650). 2026 critics found it plain, mostly pre-made or cooked on table burners, a dessert not chilled, or the hall seating impersonal.

Onsen và thư giãn: thực tế ra sao

Loại nước

A calcium-sodium–sulfate-chloride spring (weakly alkaline, pH 8.64), blended from five sources running 35–47.5°C. Per the official site, sources below 42°C are heated; the cooler tubs are free-flowing, the hotter ones mix free-flowing water with heated, recirculated and filtered water, and the hinoki and hiba tubs are 100% free-flowing.

Sự riêng tư và không gian

Two riverside bath areas swap between men and women at 5:30 — Fushimi-no-yu (Towada-stone walls, a hinoki tub and a one-person tub) and Shōsuke-buro (Ōya stone and Aomori hiba, facing the falls) — plus the open-air Takimi-no-yu right beside Fushimi-ga-taki, Inishie-no-yu, a tub made from a sake brewery's vat and a one-person 'Classic' tub. Hours are 13:00–24:30 and 5:30–9:30. Seven paid private baths: riverside Izayoi, Shōsuke and Maboroshi (no washing area), the indoor Tennei, and the rooftop Hoshizora, Tsukimi and Yumezora (2023, with a sauna). Phones and cameras are banned from all baths. Guests love bathing beside the falls; some find the tubs small or not hot enough, and one July 2026 guest noticed a river smell in the water.

Quy định về hình xăm

The official site asks people with tattoos not to use the shared indoor and open-air baths. It doesn't say whether this applies to the private baths — confirm with the inn.

Lưu ý và những điều tinh tế

  1. 01

Check-in 15:00–23:00 (call if arriving after 19:00; no entry before check-in time), check-out 10:00. A free shuttle runs once a day — 18:00 from Aizu-Wakamatsu Station, back at 11:30 the next morning — reserve by 19:00 the day before; city loop buses stop at the door.

  2. 02

There's no parking at the door: staff guide your car to lots 100–300 m away and drive you back (14:00–18:00 only), one car per booking. Staff don't carry luggage or show you to your room unless you ask.

  3. 03

Not barrier-free: the cliffside building has many small steps, stairs in front of the baths and long, partly sloping corridors, and wheelchairs can't be used inside rooms. The central air conditioning can't be switched between heating and cooling room by room.

  4. 04

Strict house rules: no photos in the baths, dining rooms or anywhere other guests appear; allergy requests at least 3 days ahead; birthday cakes or flowers arranged by email only; no outside food. Children are welcome from age 0.

  5. 05

Day-trip bathing ended on 31 August 2026, so the baths are now for staying guests only. Bath tax is ¥350 per person per night (age 12 and up) since October 2025. The inn itself warns that spiders and insects are common in this riverside setting.
