Konsensus Tamu Jepang

A family-run, barefoot-on-tatami inn with two rooftop open-air baths 800 m up and Akagi-beef kaiseki, right by the bus terminus — but the water is the clear, recirculated Shirogane spring, you wash downstairs, and budget rooms have no bath

Omori traces its roots to 1919, when the founding family started a rickshaw business in Ikaho; over the decades they ran horse carriages, cared for the horses of the imperial villa and owned racehorses, and after a fire the inn relaunched as Nagomigokoro no Yado Omori for its centenary in 2019 — hence the horse on the noren. Today it is a 35-room concrete inn run by the fifth and sixth generations, in front of the ropeway station and the Ikaho Onsen bus terminus, five minutes from the middle of the Ishidan steps, with tatami underfoot everywhere, even in the lift. The draw is the pair of rooftop open-air baths at about 800 m, looking out to Mt Akagi and the Tanigawa range, and Gunma-sourced kaiseki built around Akagi beef. Japanese guests rate it 4.6 across 3,696 reviews on one major site, 4.56 across 1,554 on another (service 4.69, breakfast 4.62) and 4.54 across 89 on a third. Most recent evidence comes from these booking-site reviews, backed by a January 2023 travelogue and a July 2026 blog. Guests praise warm, attentive staff, free draught beer and coffee in the renovated lounge, earthenware-pot rice and egg-on-rice breakfasts. Know before you book: the water is the clear Shirogane-no-yu, not Ikaho's famous brown Kogane-no-yu, and a booking site lists it as heated and recirculated; the rooftop baths have no washing area, so you wash on the first floor. 2025–2026 complaints include food some found salty and others bland, small portions, an ingredient change only partly made, steps and heavy steel doors at a room sold for older guests, and no slippers. Two-meal stays run about ¥26,000–30,000 per person, and over ¥40,000 in the onsen rooms.

  • Room 701, the 35-tatami Japanese-Western room with a free-flowing semi-open-air onsen bath (renovated April 2024)

Up to five guests, a living area, two beds and a semi-open-air bath whose windows open onto the Gunma mountains; unlike most onsen rooms it accepts children. All onsen-room guests take dinner and breakfast in private dining rooms on the sixth floor (Iroha-tei opened in April 2024), with free fridge drinks including craft beer. An October 2026 guest found the room's semi-open-air bath roomy and at just the right temperature, and an April 2026 family praised staff for finding a paediatric clinic when a child fell ill.

  • The seventh-floor onsen rooms (705–707) and the onsen 'wa-modern' twins

Five individually decorated onsen rooms on the seventh floor; an October 2026 couple celebrating a retirement in 706 — the room the inn says has the best sea-of-clouds view — loved the décor, the fridge stocked with beer, juice and water, the porcelain cups and the private-room meals. The wa-modern twins gained onsen baths in Towada-stone tubs in 2026, and June 2026 guests enjoyed the views from the bath. Children of primary-school age and under are not accepted in most of these rooms; one September 2026 guest found a twin's toilet very cramped, and a May 2026 guest found the stone bath's edges sharp.

  • Budget rooms (Double, 6-tatami compact room, business single) and room 707 for less-mobile guests

The Double and the tea-room-style 6-tatami room have a toilet but no bath, and the inn says the view is poor — a January 2023 traveller in a double found only a washbasin beside the TV. They suit solo travellers, who review them well. Room 707, sold as suited to older guests, has two steps up from the corridor and a heavy steel fire door, and a September 2026 reviewer found it over-decorated and dusty. The smoking 10-tatami room with beds has only a small window on the view side (September 2026).

Konsensus soal sarapan

4.6/5

A Japanese set in the partitioned second-floor hall: egg-on-rice with eggs from the Haruna foothills, steamed vegetables with red-shiso ponzu, homemade yogurt with Numata honey, grilled salmon, and white rice or millet porridge — one of the most praised parts of a stay

Book the rooftop private bath Nagomi (45 minutes, ¥3,300, sized for two, no washing area) online or by phone, and order the 'Roten de ippai' set — 1.5 gō of local sake to float in the tub for ¥1,650 (15:00–19:00 in the shared baths, until 23:00 in the private one). The lounge, with free coffee and tea and free draught beer in the evening, opens 15:00–21:00 and from 7:00. Drivers hand over their keys at the door: the free car park is some way off and staff move the car. Coming by highway bus from Shinjuku, call from the Ishidan-gai stop for a pickup.

Catatan soal makan malam

4.5/5

Seasonal kaiseki of Gunma produce, with the menu changing four times a year, served in the second-floor hall or, for onsen rooms and private-dining plans, in private rooms. The main is Akagi beef — as sukiyaki, shabu-shabu or steamed with sesame sauce depending on the season — and the earthenware-pot rice (Nakanojo's Hana-yukari Koshihikari) is finished as ochazuke; add-ons include maitake tempura, Akagi steak and iwana sashimi, plus sake-tasting flights. Reviewers in 2026 single out the sukiyaki, the rice and a theatrical chef's pudding. Critics found it salty (March and October 2026), too bland (September 2026) or small (June 2026); the inn makes no changes for dislikes and doesn't cater for vegetarians or vegans.

Onsen & relaksasi: kenyataannya

Jenis air

Ikaho's Shirogane-no-yu, the colourless, newer of the town's two springs — a simple spring containing metasilicic acid — rather than the brown, iron-rich Kogane-no-yu. The inn says the first-floor baths combine flow-through and recirculation; one booking site lists the water as heated and recirculated with filtration. The inn labels some in-room baths, including room 701's, free-flowing (kakenagashi).

Privasi & suasana

Two rooftop open-air baths on the eighth floor — Roman, a wide garden-style bath, and Honoka, in hinoki — swap between men and women overnight, with views to Mt Akagi, Komochi, Onoko and the Tanigawa range and sometimes a sea of clouds at dawn. They have only a single shower and no washing area, so you wash in the first-floor Rakuraku-yu baths (with sauna and cold plunge) — a trek bloggers in 2023 and 2026 found a nuisance. Many reviewers found the baths nearly empty, but a March 2026 guest felt the rooftop could be seen from distant buildings; the inn says it is reviewing the screens. The private rooftop bath Nagomi, a ceramic tub since 2018, costs extra.

Peringatan & catatan lokal

  1. 01

Check-in 15:00 (last arrival 19:00 with dinner, 23:00 without), check-out 10:00 (11:00 on some plans). Several 2026 guests who arrived early were let in before 15:00.

  2. 02

The whole inn is shoeless: tatami in corridors and even the lift, no slippers, tabi socks provided. Some 2025–2026 guests wanted slippers, and wooden toilet slippers are slippery in tabi.

  3. 03

Dietary limits: no changes for dislikes; no vegetarian, vegan, soy-free, wheat-free or dashi-free meals, and no more than two allergies per person — tell the inn at least three days ahead. In November 2025 a guest's requested change was only partly made.

  4. 04

Cancellation on the official site: 20% from three days before, 50% on the day, 100% for no-shows; booking sites may differ (one charges 30% the day before and 80% on the day).

  5. 05

Children are welcome in standard rooms, with baby gear on loan, but most onsen rooms don't take children of primary-school age or younger. There are barrier-free rooms, yet the old building has steps and heavy steel fire doors. Snow is possible until the end of March — bring winter tyres or chains.
