Konsensus Tamu Jepang

A large, well-run Ikaho inn in a 15,000-tsubo garden with both of the town's springs — a free-flowing 'golden' outdoor bath and a recirculated 'silver' indoor one — plus sauna and in-room-bath rooms; the outdoor tub is small and the building is ageing

Hibikino is a 64-room inn set in about 15,000 tsubo of gardens and wildflower paths at the foot of Mt Haruna, a kilometre below Ikaho's stone steps. Its draw is having both of Ikaho's springs: the historic iron-rich Kogane-no-yu ('golden water'), which the inn runs free-flowing into a granite outdoor bath, and the newer, clear Shirogane-no-yu ('silver water'), filtered and recirculated in the indoor bath beside a sauna with hourly löyly. The large baths were fully renovated in March 2023, a weekend-only bath called Tamayura was added, and in February 2026 a bookable private bath, The Private Spa. Three detached wings have their own open-air baths, and two compact rooms have semi-open-air tubs. Japanese guests rate it 4.5 across 1,097 reviews on one major site (cleanliness 4.7, baths 4.6) and 4.22 across 2,596 on another, where service scores 4.34 but dinner only 3.96. Recent reviewers praise warm, flexible staff, spotless renovated baths, plated (not buffet) meals using Gunma beef and farm vegetables, and the late-night ramen. The catches, from 2022 to 2026: the golden outdoor tub is small (full with about five people) and often lukewarm, the large bath gets crowded with too few washing stations, and the building and futons show their age — 2026 reviews mention aircon noise, a smelly pillow, a clogged toilet, slow dinner pacing and hair on the changing-room floor. A 2022 travelogue questioned the 'high-class' label. Two-meal stays in a standard room run about ¥24,000–26,000 per person; the detached rooms cost more.

  • Detached rooms with open-air baths — Hōshun-an (芳春庵), Ikuji-an (生地庵) and Tōshin-an (燈心庵)

Each is a separate sukiya-style wing reached by its own corridor, with underfloor heating and a private outdoor tub (Hōshun-an's is 140 × 80 cm); Hōshun-an (12 + 6 + 8 tatami, for up to 8) has been used by members of the imperial family and was renovated in July 2024. An August 2026 guest found their wing spacious with an atmospheric bath, and a September 2026 family loved Ikuji-an. Expect 23–37 stone steps from the main entrance.

  • Compact rooms Yukyū-an (湯休庵) and Yuzen-an (湯禅庵), for two or solo travellers

About 13.5㎡ with a queen bed plus a 10㎡ bathroom holding a semi-open-air tub of Shirogane spring water; a guest who spent two nights in Yuzen-an as a typhoon hit in August 2026 soaked in it all day. They're reached via an outdoor walkway and futons can't be laid.

Sebaiknya dihindari

  • Standard 10-tatami rooms in the main building (46 of the 64 rooms)

Comfortable and clean by most accounts, but the building is old: 2026 reviewers mention thin futons, an aircon that rattled at night, a smelly pillow and banquet noise in the corridors, and a 2022 travelogue found hair on the toilet seat and a smell. The Wa-Modern bed rooms and the two-room types are the newer-feeling alternatives.

Konsensus soal sarapan

3.9/5

A plated Japanese breakfast built around Gunma produce and 'morning-picked' vegetables — salmon chan-chan-yaki cooked at the table, yudōfu and chawanmushi; liked by most, though one September 2026 guest rated it 1/5 and an October 2026 family waited long for rice and miso soup

Dinner and breakfast are deliberately not buffets. Coffee isn't served at breakfast — head to the lobby lounge. The Shinma-tei noodle bar (20:30–24:00) serves the ramen reviewers rave about. From May 2026 the inn runs a shuttle within Ikaho (9:00–10:30 and 15:30–17:30) — use it rather than walking the uphill kilometre to the stone steps.

Catatan soal makan malam

3.8/5

The Hibikino shunsai kaiseki changes monthly and uses Jōshū and Akagi beef, Ginhikari trout and vegetables grown for the inn; it's served in private rooms in the Hanahibiki restaurant or in a shared Japanese dining room, depending on plan. Travelogues from 2020 to 2023 enjoyed a beef sukiyaki, a Haruna pork steak on a ceramic grill and fry-it-yourself skewers, and found even the 'small portion' plan filling. 2026 reviews are warmer about service than food: some found dishes plain, the meat portion small or the pacing slow. The inn makes no changes for allergies or dislikes.

Onsen & relaksasi: kenyataannya

Jenis air

Two springs. The outdoor bath uses Kogane-no-yu, a calcium-sodium sulfate-bicarbonate-chloride spring that turns brownish as its iron oxidises, which the inn says is free-flowing. The indoor bath, the weekend Tamayura bath, The Private Spa and the compact rooms' tubs use Shirogane-no-yu, a clear metasilicic-acid simple spring, which the inn lists as filtered and recirculated. The inn doesn't state the water in the detached rooms' outdoor baths.

Privasi & suasana

The 1F large baths (renovated 2023, open 15:00–25:00 and 5:00–9:30) have a sauna with hourly auto-löyly; Tamayura opens on weekends only, alternating between men and women. The Private Spa (opened February 2026; indoor and lie-down baths, up to 5 people, ¥5,500 for 1–3) is booked first-come at the front desk on the day. Guests praise the clean, modern bathhouse and amenities, but the granite outdoor tub is small, lukewarm on cool or rainy days, and hard to get into when the inn is full; Tamayura was closed for maintenance for one September 2026 family.

No policy found on the official site or Japanese booking sites — contact the inn. The detached rooms, compact rooms and The Private Spa offer private bathing.

Peringatan & catatan lokal

  1. 01

Check-in 15:00, check-out 10:00. Self-service luggage lockers by the shop (since July 2025) let you drop bags before check-in.

  2. 02

Cancellation: 20% from 7 days before, 30% from 5 days, 50% the day before, 100% on the day or no-show; some plans differ.

  3. 03

The inn does not adjust meals for allergies or dislikes — it only labels the eight major allergens on the menu — and a July 2026 guest who declared a natto allergy still found it on the tray.

  4. 04

It's a big house with a 240-seat banquet hall, karaoke and bars, so tour groups and banquet noise are possible; the detached rooms involve 23–37 steps and stairs to the dining rooms.

  5. 05

By car it's about 15 minutes from the Shibukawa-Ikaho IC, with 160 free spaces; by public transport, take the bus from Shibukawa Station to Miharashi-shita and walk 5–10 minutes (pickup from the stop may be possible after 14:30).
