A big, polished 111-room onsen ryokan famous for its live-cooking dinner buffet and all-inclusive lounge, with a quieter kaiseki annex — but every bath, including the in-room tubs, is heated, recirculated and chlorinated
Grandia Housen opened as the 80-guest Hōsensō in 1963 and has grown into a 111-room complex (up to 555 guests) of six wings, from 15–16-tatami standard rooms in the 12-storey Kōsuiden to the 16-suite annex Kotobukitei (個止吹気亭), which has its own kitchen, monthly kaiseki and garden or sky-view open-air baths. The annex is part of the same inn and the same booking. Japanese guests rate it very highly: 4.65 across 2,133 Rakuten Travel reviews (dinner 4.81) and 4.7 across 179 Jalan reviews from the past year (dinner 4.9), and Jalan ranked its dinner first among inns with 101–300 rooms two years running. Four independent blogs (December 2023 to February 2025) agree on the main draw: a dinner buffet with sushi made to order, tuna belly, steak flambéed in front of you, freshly fried tempura and free alcohol. One blogger called it the best buffet in Japan, and another stayed twice. They also praise the free lounge, the big top-floor baths with views over the rice fields, and smooth, queue-free service despite the size. The catches: this is a large, family-heavy inn with a game corner, karaoke and a disco, not a hideaway; the water comes from three of the inn's own wells but is diluted, heated, recirculated and treated with chlorine and bromine everywhere, and one blogger could smell chlorine; the Sakura-tei SUITE 'semi-open-air' tubs are not onsen at all. 2026 complaints include a suite full of steps that tripped up a family, an open-plan suite visible from the corridor, older rooms with a smell, a noisy room above, slow in-room kaiseki in the annex, the big bath being cleaned before closing time, and the free onsen-egg corner and foot bath not running. Two-meal stays reviewed in 2026 mostly cost over ¥30,000 per person; Jalan rates on 13 October 2026 started from ¥27,500 per person (standard room, buffet) and ¥108,900 in the annex with crab kaiseki.

Yutorogi-tei (離れ ゆとろぎ亭) garden rooms with an onsen open-air bath, 1F (14 rooms), or the Kokomichi-tei room with an open-air bath
The best value for a private bath: each ground-floor room in this separate wing has its own garden and an onsen tub big enough for two (Japanese-style, Western-style or mixed rooms; standard rooms have a shower room rather than an indoor tub). Yutorogi-tei and Kokomichi-tei guests can also use the hinoki baths, which only the annex and these wings may use, and which a blogger and a September 2026 guest found almost empty even when the inn was full. The standard kaiseki plan has dinner in private rooms at the Yūzen restaurant, and Jalan listed it from ¥36,300 per person on 13 October 2026; a blogger quoted Saturday rates from ¥44,400 per person in 2025. 2026 guests loved the open-air bath and the kaiseki. One July 2026 family found a few frogs in their outdoor washing area. Kokomichi-tei (renovated 2021) has nine standard and three deluxe twin rooms with a tatami living area, plus one room with an onsen bath. It has its own free lounge, but a blogger warned that its onsen room is compact and that the upstairs open-air bath looks towards the car park.
Annex Kotobukitei (別邸 個止吹気亭) suites with an onsen open-air bath — 16 rooms, 70–140㎡
The quiet, upmarket option behind its own lattice door: six garden suites on 1F (80㎡, two tatami rooms or a tatami room plus twin beds), nine Comfort suites on 2F (70㎡, with a sky-view bath), and the 140㎡ Royal Suite Fuji. The annex has its own kitchen and chef serving monthly kaiseki (October 2026: steamed abalone, matsutake dobin-mushi, A5 Wakasa beef, Ōno buckwheat soba and a Fukui-salmon kamameshi). Garden suites eat in the room; Comfort suites eat in the private Kotobuki dining rooms (opened November 2023). Checkout is 11:00. On 13 October 2026 Jalan listed annex rooms from ¥48,400 per person with the Wakasa-beef kaiseki (or with the buffet), and from ¥108,900 with the Echizen-crab kaiseki. In August 2026, a family travelling with a wheelchair user praised the care and the food, but waited a long time for the rest of the family's in-room courses, and found check-in muddled. A blogger noted that the annex has its own private lounge.

Sakura-tei SUITE (さくら亭SUITE) semi-open-air rooms, and older rooms in the main tower
The 11 Sakura-tei SUITE rooms (opened March 2023) look modern and bright, but two bloggers point out that the semi-open-air tub is not onsen water, and Sakura-tei guests cannot use the hinoki baths. In October 2026 a guest tripped over the many steps inside a suite, and in September 2026 a returning guest found the open-plan suite visible from the corridor whenever the door opened, with a smelly toilet. The cheapest Kōsuiden rooms are large (15–16 tatami, with rice-field views) and fine if you are mainly there for the buffet, but an August 2026 two-star review found an older room with a smell, and a September 2026 guest was kept up until after 23:30 by noise from the room above. Kōsuiden rooms 501 and 502 are the main tower's only rooms with an onsen open-air bath.

Konsensus soal sarapan
4.2/5Buffet plans have a Japanese-Western breakfast buffet in the Toki-no-kura restaurant (7:00, last entry 8:30): rice balls made to order, grilled fish, curry, tofu, dim sum, fresh mixed juice and fruit. Kaiseki plans in Yūzen or the annex get a Japanese set breakfast instead (7:30, last order 9:00). Breakfast scores 4.69 on Rakuten and 4.7 on Jalan, but all three bloggers who described it found it ordinary next to the dinner, and a September 2026 guest who came late found dishes had run out.
Use the free lounge (Kangetsu, renovated September 2025) early: draft beer, highballs, sours, coffee, ice lollies and snacks from 15:00 to 18:30 and 19:00 to 21:30, and coffee from 8:00 to 11:00. A blogger found it empty at 15:00 and packed with families after 17:00. Bath towels are provided at the big baths, so you don't need to carry them from your room. Book the free shuttle from Awara-Onsen Station (every 15 minutes from 14:30 to 16:45) by the day before, or it may not run.
Catatan soal makan malam
4.6/5Most guests eat at Toki-no-kura, a 550㎡ open-kitchen buffet from 18:00 (last entry 19:30) overseen by the head chef, who has supervised JAL first-class menus, according to the inn. Bloggers describe more than 100 dishes: sushi on red-vinegar rice with tuna belly, local sweet shrimp, Wakasa beef steak flambéed to order, tempura fried to order, eel, a macaron tower, and drinks including alcohol (local sake such as the inn's 'Okami' label) all included. Other choices: Fukura (opened April 2022) serves a course of sashimi and A5 Wakasa beef shabu-shabu with free drinks; Yūzen serves private-room creative kaiseki, mainly to Yutorogi-tei guests; and the annex serves its own monthly kaiseki. In winter there are Echizen crab plans. Dinner scores 4.81 on Rakuten and 4.9 on Jalan. 2026 complaints: a September guest seated far from the food found the vast hall tiring and a crying child next to them, the limited ayu sweetfish ran out early, a two-night guest wished the buffet changed on the second night, and a staff photographer woke a sleeping baby. The inn removes or substitutes shrimp, crab, buckwheat, egg and dairy if told three days ahead.
Onsen & relaksasi: kenyataannya
Alkaline simple spring (pH 8.6–9.0), colourless and clear, from three of the inn's own wells. The water is only 26–31°C at source, with a slight sulphur smell at two wells. The inn's own usage table says every bath, from the top-floor Tenjō no SPA to the hinoki baths, the foot bath and all 33 in-room open-air tubs, uses added water, heating and recirculation with filtering, with chlorine and bromine disinfection. There is no free-flowing water. One blogger found the in-room water silky ('nuru-nuru, sube-sube'), and another noticed a slight chlorine smell in the big bath.
The 5F Tenjō no SPA (renovated 2017) has two halves, Tsuki-no-yu and Hoshi-no-yu, each with a large bath, hinoki bath, lie-down bath, sauna (15:00–24:00), cold plunge and an open-air bath looking over the rice fields. The halves do not swap, so you get the same side all stay. Open 15:00–24:00 and 5:00–9:30. A family blogger called the open-air bath an 'infinity' view, but two 2026 guests found the outdoor tubs mostly shallow, made for half-body soaking. The hinoki baths (Chōyō for men, Kasen for women, until 24:00) are only for the annex, Yutorogi-tei and Kokomichi-tei, and are often near-empty. In September 2026 a guest was told at 23:00 that the big bath closed at 23:30 and found cleaning staff already working in the bath. Jalan lists no private-hire bath, so the 33 rooms with their own onsen tub are the private option.
Not accepted: the inn's terms say people with tattoos (including stickers) may not use the baths and may not show tattoos anywhere in the inn outside their room.
Peringatan & catatan lokal
- 01
This is a large, lively resort-ryokan: 111 rooms, banquet halls for 340 tatami, a game corner, karaoke, a disco and a dinosaur-themed family room. Summer and holiday dates are busy with families, and guests say the inn is hard to book. If you want quiet, book the annex or Yutorogi-tei and the kaiseki plan.
- 02
None of the water is free-flowing: all baths and in-room tubs are diluted, heated, recirculated and chlorinated. The 11 Sakura-tei SUITE semi-open-air tubs use non-onsen water.
- 03
Check-in is from 15:00 and check-out is 10:00 (11:00 for annex plans). Arrive close to 15:00 to enjoy the lounge before dinner. The free shuttle runs from the west exit of Awara-Onsen Station only at set times (14:30–16:45 in, 9:00–11:15 out), and must be booked by the day before. There are 300 free parking spaces.
- 04
Several free extras that bloggers mention were not running for some 2026 guests: an August guest found the onsen-egg corner gone, and a September guest could not use the foot bath. The women's changing room has just two washer-dryers, and there's no coin laundry.
- 05
Service is generally warm and fast (check-in on a sofa, prepaid check-out from the room), but busy nights show strain. An August 2026 two-star review found service below the hype, an annex guest found check-in staff passing on conflicting information, and a September guest disliked staff staging family photos at the buffet. The inn says visible tattoos are not allowed in public areas.
