Đánh giá chung của du khách Nhật

The biggest inn on Okukinu's car-free road: five of its own sulphur springs flow, unheated and undiluted, into mixed and women-only open-air baths and a row of side-by-side 'tasting' tubs — but the rooms are plain, upkeep is patchy, and you pay in cash

Kaniyu began as a climbers' hut, known from the early Shōwa era into the 1950s as 'Gakujin-goya Kaniyu'. After the war, when it stood empty, the bath-keeper Komatsu Chōkyū (小松長久) rebuilt it and gave it its present name. Today it is the largest of Okukinu's four inns, with 48 rooms (per its website) across a four-storey concrete main building, the renovated Sekizenkan and the wooden Asunaro-kan. You reach it on the inn's free shuttle from the Meotobuchi car park. People come for the water. The inn owns five springs, four of them milky sulphur, and says every tub except the in-room unit baths is free-flowing with no heating and no added water. Two of the open-air baths and the small riverside Kamoshika-no-yu are mixed (single-colour bath towel only, no bath wear), one large open-air bath is for women only, and the Roman-no-yu puts all five springs side by side. Japanese guests rate it 4.1 across 712 reviews on Jalan (baths 4.5) and 4.29 across 438 on Rakuten. Bloggers from 2022 to 2026 describe snow baths at −10°C, a 12:30 check-in, bathing after check-out, and often having the mixed baths to themselves. The complaints, mostly from 2025–2026, are plain or salty food, tubs that are lukewarm one day and scalding the next, slippery floors with algae, mould and dust in some rooms, heaters that can't keep up and no air conditioning, moths in summer, weak Wi-Fi, and staff whose Japanese some guests found limited (others praised their manners). It is cash only. On Jalan in 2025–2026, two-meal stays mostly cost about ¥11,000–19,000 per person, and up to about ¥27,000 for better rooms.

Hướng dẫn chọn phòng

Nên chọn

  • Sekizenkan river-side rooms (14-tatami Japanese room, or the fourth-floor Japanese-bed twin)

The renovated building, with a lift, a unit bath and a washlet toilet. A blogger who booked the cheapest ¥16,000 standard plan on Jalan in June 2026 was moved to Sekizenkan room 221 (10 + 4 tatami). Staff explained that when the inn is quiet they usually upgrade guests, and bookings had dropped since the bear news. A May 2026 reviewer found their Sekizenkan room very clean. Don't pay extra just for the view: an August 2024 blogger in the fourth-floor twin, the top category, found the view from the top floor nothing special.

  • Asunaro-kan room closest to the open-air baths (recently renovated)

The wooden annex is the closest building to the open-air baths, and the inn has renovated the room nearest them. A March 2026 guest in that Japanese-Western room said the open-air bath next door felt like having your own, and a January 2025 blogger liked an Asunaro room near the women's open-air bath that had a second room for spreading out hiking gear. The catch is cold: the same March guest found the kerosene fan heater never fully warmed the room, and the Asunaro corridor was the coldest in the inn.

  • Standard 10-tatami-plus room, main building or Asunaro-kan (no view choice)

The cheapest way in, and the room you'll get on most budget plans (about ¥12,000–17,000 per person in 2025–2026 Jalan reviews). A 2023 blogger stayed in what was probably the most expensive room but would book the cheapest 'room assigned by the inn' plan next time, because at Kaniyu the baths are everything. A July 2026 reviewer had 10 + 6 tatami and found it spacious, apart from an unusual smell and a single bin by the washbasin.

Nên tránh

  • Older main-building and Asunaro rooms in winter, late autumn or high summer

There is no air conditioning; one October 2025 reviewer waited for cooler weather before returning. In November 2025 a guest's heater didn't warm the room even on full power. Another November 2025 guest found mould from window condensation, dust on the shoji and small insects in the toilet, and an October 2025 group found mould and cobwebs. In the main building the washbasins are small and old-fashioned (August 2024).

Nhận định về bữa sáng

3.8/5

A Japanese set breakfast at 7:30 in the Sekizenkan dining hall. A 2022 blogger praised the homemade tofu, but one November 2025 guest likened it to souvenir-shop items taken out of their packets

Take the 12:00 shuttle and order lunch at check-in: mountain-vegetable soba is brought to your room (¥600 in 2022, about ¥700 in 2026). At dinner, order the paid extras. Duck tōban-yaki and maitake tempura are praised again and again, and iwana sashimi is back for a limited time. Drinks are fairly priced (nigori sake ¥700 in 2026). If you'll catch the 11:20 shuttle, there is nowhere to eat at Meotobuchi and up to an hour to wait for the city bus, so order the inn's rice-ball bento, although one 2025 guest found the bento poor.

Điểm đáng chú ý của bữa tối

3.8/5

Dinner is at 18:00 sharp in Kinkōka, the Sekizenkan dining hall. It is a mountain menu of wild vegetables and river fish. Bloggers ate yuba, salt-grilled iwana and duck tōban-yaki (February 2022), and Yashio trout sashimi, fried river fish and onsen tofu (June 2026). The inn says venison, bear and salamander are served only as paid extras: deer tataki, salamander-and-maitake tempura and venison steak. Many reviewers call it simple but good value. The complaints: two fish courses that overlapped (August 2024), salty seasoning (September 2025), a meal without an obvious main dish (November 2025), food that didn't seem homemade (July 2026), and in August 2026 staff perfume in the dining room and guests drinking their own canned beer without being stopped.

Onsen và thư giãn: thực tế ra sao

Loại nước

Five of the inn's own springs of four types, mostly a weakly acidic sulphur–sodium–chloride–bicarbonate spring of the hydrogen-sulphide type (analysed in 2009). Take-no-yu is the one clear, sulphur-free source. The inn says every tub except the in-room unit baths is free-flowing, with no heating and no added water. So temperature and colour change from day to day, from clear to milky blue-white and occasionally black, and the inn admits two springs have run at unstable temperatures since an earthquake in February 2013. Some of the Roman-no-yu tasting tubs are too hot to enter without the cold-water hose, and bloggers in 2022 and 2023 had to use it.

Sự riêng tư và không gian

According to the official site, the First open-air bath is women only, and the Second and Third are mixed. Bloggers add that the small Kamoshika-no-yu by the river is also mixed, and that the Roman-no-yu's five one-person tubs are walled off but share a mixed walkway. In the mixed baths you may wear only a single-colour bath towel: no bath wear and no swimsuits. Swimsuits are allowed only in the seasonal lukewarm onsen pool, which closed for 2026 on 4 October. The Third bath has separate changing rooms and entrances. The Second's changing hut is shared and has no partition (2023). In 2022 a blogger found no women-only hours in the mixed baths. There are free private open-air baths: book after check-in, 50 minutes, once per group, 8:00–22:00. You can only wash in the indoor baths, Kindachi-no-yu (men) and Hime-no-yu (women), and the baths are far apart, so you change each time. Baths are open around the clock except during cleaning, including after check-out. Guests in 2026 warn of very slippery floors and algae.

Lưu ý và những điều tinh tế

  1. 01

Plan around the shuttle. It leaves Meotobuchi at 12:00, 15:00 and 17:30 and waits for the city bus. Return runs leave at 9:00 or 11:20, with nothing at 10:00. City buses leave Kinugawa-Onsen station at 7:35, 10:15, 13:25 and 15:50 and take about 90 minutes (¥1,570 in 2022–2023). Drivers can't approach from the Gunma side; the inn suggests setting your sat-nav to Komayumi-no-Sato. In winter (early December to late April) the Sannō forest road is closed.

  2. 02

Cash only. The inn takes no cards, even for stays booked through online travel agencies (2023), and there's no ATM anywhere you can reach on foot.

  3. 03

Check-in 12:30–18:00, check-out 10:00, and you can keep bathing until your shuttle. Walk-in day bathing has ended; non-guests can come only on a pre-booked day plan with shuttle. The inn is closed for maintenance on 7–9 and 14–17 December 2026 and on several dates in January 2027.

  4. 04

This is wild country. Expect moths and bugs in summer (2026 reviews), and in June 2026 staff told a blogger that guests had been cancelling since bear sightings made news across Japan. The three main mobile carriers work, but in-room Wi-Fi is weak (2026).

  5. 05

It is not barrier-free: a 2023 blogger found you can't get around by wheelchair without help, and the open-air baths are especially hard to reach, though Sekizenkan has a lift. Families with small children do stay; a May 2026 reviewer came with a two-year-old and a baby. Children in the pool must be watched by someone 18 or over.
