Konsensus Tamu Jepang

A big, old-fashioned riverside inn in the Heike village of Yunishigawa, with three free private open-air baths above the gorge and charcoal irori dinners at value prices — if you can live with dated rooms and a chilly winter building

Yamashiroya is one of the larger inns in Yunishigawa, the remote mountain valley north of Kinugawa where, by local legend, survivors of the defeated Heike clan went into hiding. Its 32 rooms all face the river, and the reason people come is twofold: three private open-air baths on the riverbank — a round iron-pot tub for two, a granite tub for three or four and a pair of hinoki tubs side by side — free to use on a first-come basis, and dinner around a charcoal irori hearth, the 'Heike falconry' cooking of skewered char, yuba, deer and miso-coated ichishō-bera. Japanese guests rate it 4.4 across 915 reviews on Jalan (dinner 4.5, service 4.6) and 4.12 across 556 on Rakuten Travel. Only a couple of first-hand blogs exist, most recently a September 2022 stay, so most recent evidence comes from booking-site reviews; those from 2026 praise warm, attentive staff, slippery-smooth water, the sound of the river and enormous meals. The catches are consistent: an old Shōwa-era building (cleanliness 3.9 on Jalan, facilities 3.71 on Rakuten), some rooms with only a fan instead of air conditioning, a cold lobby, dining room and rooms in winter, and dinners some found rushed or too large. In May 2026 one family never managed to get into a private bath. Two-meal plans reviewed in August–October 2026 cost about ¥10,000–23,000 per person.

Panduan memilih kamar

Direkomendasikan

  • Riverside 10-tatami Japanese rooms (渓流を望む和室10畳), ideally a type with bath and toilet

The standard room in almost every 2026 review: river and valley right below the window, a wide window-side sitting area, and a washbasin in that sitting area (handy with children, a 2022 family blogger noted). Rakuten lists both a 'toilet only' and a 'bath and toilet' version — check which you are booking, though most guests use the shared baths anyway. A September 2026 guest paid ¥12,001–13,000 per person.

  • The seventh-floor special room (three rooms with twin beds and two Japanese rooms)

A spacious top-floor room with views over the valley, which the inn says is popular with groups and families; Jalan lists it as a Japanese-Western room. Ask for it if you are travelling as four or more.

Sebaiknya dihindari

  • Rooms without air conditioning, and any room in deep winter

The inn states that some rooms cannot have air conditioning because of their position and get a fan instead; an August 2026 guest at close to 1,000 m found it mostly cool enough. In January 2026 a guest found the lobby, dining room and room cold — bring warm layers. Other 2026 niggles: a pre-stocked fridge with little space, a washbasin far from the toilet and worn fittings. Staff enter to lay and clear futons during dinner and breakfast.

Konsensus soal sarapan

4.2/5

A Japanese buffet in the dining room with simple home-style side dishes, tofu you set yourself and sekihan red rice, cooked every day — the okami told a guest — as a wish for a safe journey home; mostly praised as generous and carefully made, though one guest would have preferred a set breakfast

Head for the private baths right after check-in: they are free, unbooked, 40 minutes each, 15:00–22:00 only, with the key from the front desk — a repeat guest managed each twice in an afternoon, while a Golden Week 2026 guest never got in. There is no convenience store in the village (the nearest is down in Kinugawa), so buy drinks and snacks on the way. Buses are infrequent; check the timetable on the inn's site.

Catatan soal makan malam

4.4/5

'Ancient Heike falconry cuisine' (古の平家鷹狩料理) around a sunken charcoal hearth, in a dining hall lit by lanterns (one August 2026 guest ate in a private room): iwana char, yuba, bandai mochi and ichishō-bera (minced meat with miso grilled on a wooden paddle) roast on skewers while side dishes, a hotpot and soba fill the table. Extras on order include deer sashimi, bear hotpot, salamander skewers and a three-sake tasting set (under ¥2,000 in 2022). 2026 reviewers loved the iwana and called it remarkable value, but some found the portions far too large, the fire lit the moment they sat down, the beef skewers overcooked and the staff's frequent check-ins a little hurried.

Onsen & relaksasi: kenyataannya

Jenis air

Yunishigawa Onsen water, listed on Jalan as 100% natural hot spring; the inn's own site gives no analysis. A 2022 blogger described a strongly alkaline simple spring, slippery to the touch with a faint smell of sulphur. The inn says the iron-pot private bath is free-flowing, but an October 2026 guest noticed recirculated water mixed into the flow of the main baths, and the 2022 blogger smelled a little chlorine in the hinoki private bath.

Privasi & suasana

Separate men's and women's indoor baths, each with a riverside open-air bath down a flight of steps (the stones are slippery; mats are laid out). The three private open-air baths sit along the river: the iron pot for two, granite for three or four, and the twin hinoki tubs. There are handrails in the main baths but no lockers in the changing rooms, so leave valuables at the front desk. Guests praise the long bathing hours, the river views and snow-viewing in winter.

Peringatan & catatan lokal

  1. 01

Check-in 15:00 (Rakuten lists arrival until 19:00), check-out 10:00. The bus from Yunishigawa-Onsen Station stops right outside at 'Yamashiroya Hotel-mae'; by car it's about 70 minutes from Imaichi IC, with 40 free parking spaces. Winter tyres are needed from about December to early March.

  2. 02

The building is old and Shōwa in style; 2026 reviewers generally found it clean, but cleanliness scores 3.9 on Jalan and facilities 3.71 on Rakuten.

  3. 03

Meals are big — several guests left food and one asked for a smaller-meal plan. Mention allergies before arrival, as the inn asks.

  4. 04

Not fully barrier-free: there is a lift, an entrance ramp, wheelchair loan and handrails in the main baths, but steps remain in the baths and parts of the building.

  5. 05

All rooms and the building are non-smoking (a smoking area is by the third-floor lift). Families are common, and 2026 reviewers mention children's meals and a dessert timed for a small child.
