Konsensus Tamu Jepang

Fifteen sukiya rooms in a bamboo grove, Kyoto-style kaiseki in your room and empty garden baths — superb food and calm, but some rooms are showing their age

Yagyu no Sho grew out of a Tokyo restaurant opened in 1959; the ryokan followed in Shuzenji in 1970 and was rebuilt room by room in sukiya style in 2009. The name comes from the founder's love of kendo rather than from the Yagyu sword lineage, and the inn still has its own kendo hall. There are 15 rooms, each laid out differently: six with an open-air bath (including two detached villas), six with a semi-open-air bath and three with a cypress tub, all of them filled with spring water according to the official site. Japanese guests come back above all for the food — around 13–15 Kyoto-style kaiseki courses served in the room, from sesame tofu with sea urchin to wagyu fillet and huge Izu strawberries — and for the quiet: check-in happens in your room, staff seem to time things so guests rarely meet, and bloggers repeatedly had the garden baths to themselves. Scores are very high (5.00 from 36 reviews on Rakuten, 4.66 on Ikyu, with the baths at 4.86). The caveats are specific: several 2025 reviews mention worn plumbing, old washbasins and a bath not filled on arrival, a 2026 guest found mould in the room bath, some rooms have steps or a very low doorway, every room permits smoking, and portions can be more than you can finish. Two people paid about ¥170,000–194,000 in 2024–2025.

Direkomendasikan

  • The 梅の生 detached villa, or 一樹

梅の生 (96㎡) has a large open-air bath, floor heating under the kotatsu and a big shower room instead of an indoor tub; two guests in December 2025 paid ¥193,600 for one night with two meals, booked direct. 一樹 (119㎡) has a 20-tatami main room, a large roofed open-air bath and an indoor bath, praised by a December 2024 blogger.

  • Kokonoe (九重) or Tsukikage (月影)

Repeat guests' favourites: one regular has booked Kokonoe, a third-floor room with a semi-open-air bath facing a small courtyard garden, four years running, and Tsukikage overlooks the koi garden. Note a July 2025 reviewer found Tsukikage's washbasin and toilet old.

Sebaiknya dihindari

  • Jōgen (上弦), Hatsukari (初雁) and ground-floor rooms

Jōgen's bath was praised, but the doorway between its rooms is about 150cm high — one guest hit their head repeatedly. A November 2025 reviewer found third-floor Hatsukari's small windows confining. Staff themselves moved a February 2025 guest away from a ground-floor room because of its steps, and a 2024 guest in an older-style room found many steps and weak heating. Several 2025 reviews mention worn fixtures in 桂 and 一樹.

Konsensus soal sarapan

4.4/5

Strawberry lassi, hot nyūmen noodles, boned Izu horse-mackerel himono, wasabi rice and a house-made sherbet

The two public baths, Musashi-no-yu and Tsū-no-yu, swap between men and women at midnight (with a 20-minute changeover), so you can try both on one night. They are open 14:00 to 10:00 the next morning and bloggers often found them empty. There is no private reservable bath and no sauna.

Catatan soal makan malam

4.7/5

Served in your room from 18:00–19:00 under head chef Kanda Naoya (since 2018): about 13–15 Kyoto-style courses that change monthly, starting with an aperitif — sesame tofu with raw sea urchin, sashimi with Suruga or Heda salt, kuroge wagyu fillet steak, matsutake dobin-mushi in autumn, octopus or Suruga rice and giant Izu strawberries. Allergies are handled, but the inn cannot cater for vegan or vegetarian diets or salt and sugar limits. Complaints: too much food (2026), a dull yellowtail dish (2025), courses arriving too fast (2025), and few non-alcoholic drinks.

Onsen & relaksasi: kenyataannya

Jenis air

An alkaline simple spring (pH 8.3). The official site says every room bath is free-flowing hot-spring water; Ikyu's listing instead marks the public baths as heated with added water and the in-room open-air baths as not free-flowing, so the sources disagree.

Privasi & suasana

Twelve of the fifteen rooms have an open-air or semi-open-air bath and the other three a cypress tub, so most guests bathe in private. The two public baths each have an indoor bath and a large garden open-air bath; Tsū-no-yu has the smaller tub. A June 2025 guest in Yūgyotei found staff had shut the storm shutters without asking because of past complaints about the stream's noise, and a 2026 reviewer found mould in their room bath.

Kebijakan tato

No policy found on the official site or Japanese booking sites — contact the inn. Every room has its own bath, so you need not use the public baths.

Peringatan & catatan lokal

  1. 01

Getting there: Shuzenji Station is reached by the Odoriko limited express from Tokyo (about 140 minutes) or by Shinkansen and change (90–105 minutes); then about 10 minutes by taxi (a 2025 guest paid ¥2,300). There is no station shuttle. By car, about 30 minutes from Numazu IC, with free parking for 20 cars.

  2. 02

Check-in 14:00–18:00, check-out 11:00; both happen in your room with matcha and a sweet.

  3. 03

Smoking is permitted in every room — if smoke bothers you, mention it when booking.

  4. 04

Children are welcome, with children's kaiseki for ages 8–12 and a kids' menu for ages 4–7; a 2026 guest with a baby found staff accommodating.

  5. 05

Missing small comforts: no coffee maker, a fridge holding only water and tea, and few power outlets, according to 2024–2025 guests. The inn has a fourth-floor salon bar.
