Hirugami Onsen Nitchoan Keigetsu
昼神温泉 日長庵 桂月

A 20-room inn in the 'starry village' of Achi with huge kōyamaki-wood baths of silky pH 9.7 water and the rare Murasawa beef — but the big baths are partly recirculated, 2026 guests say the outdoor tubs are gone, and the building shows its age
Nitchoan Keigetsu takes its name from the painter Matsubayashi Keigetsu, who wrote a Chinese poem about the Ina Valley and named the previous head of the house's hermitage 'Nitchōan'. It's a 20-room inn in Hirugami Onsen, a spa town whose water was struck during tunnel work in 1973, and the main draw is that water: an alkaline simple sulphur spring of pH 9.7 that feels slippery on the skin, poured into large baths of kōyamaki (Japanese umbrella pine) and open from check-in until 9:30 the next morning. The inn's own page says the water is not diluted but is partly recirculated for heating. It also claims to be the only inn in Nagano serving Murasawa beef, ordered from Kyoto by cut and weight. Independent blogs are scarce — one onsen blogger stayed in April 2024 — so most recent evidence comes from booking-site reviews. Japanese guests rate it 4.3 across 706 reviews on Jalan (dinner 4.7), 4.23 across 566 on Rakuten Travel and 4.11 across 38 on Ikyu. They praise kind, careful staff, Kyoto-style dashi cooking with local carp, generous breakfasts, the quiet baths and the after-dinner stargazing walk. The 2026 complaints: no outdoor bath (April, August and September 2026), creaking tatami and a weak room shower, rain noise from a leak in a twin room, an uncleaned room tub on arrival, a smell from a room bath, cold dishes, a hard futon and an old building. Standard two-meal plans start at ¥14,300 per person, and reviewers typically paid about ¥17,000–30,000 or more per person.

Top-floor Japanese room (10 tatami) with a kōyamaki onsen semi-open-air bath — only two in the inn
The only rooms with spring water in your own bath, plus a shower booth. The April 2024 blogger chose the inn for this room and found the bath 'a comfortable size for one', with silky water at about 41°C; a May 2026 guest called it the best part of the stay, and a September 2026 guest with mobility problems found it 'exactly right'. An August 2026 family, though, found the tub uncleaned on arrival and waited 30 minutes for it to be cleaned and refilled.
Japanese rooms of 12 or 12.5 tatami with a hinoki indoor bath
Roomy enough for up to six people, and recently refurbished — reviewers in 2026 describe rooms smelling of fresh tatami, clean bathrooms and garden views. The hinoki room baths are not onsen water, so use the big baths for the spring.
Sebaiknya dihindari
Twin Japanese-Western room (26㎡+, Airweave beds) and older-feeling standard rooms
A September 2026 guest in the twin room couldn't sleep for the sound of rain from a leak by the window-side beds, and another found only two dining chairs for three people. Other 2026 reviews mention creaking tatami, a room shower with only a few working jets, a smell from a room bath, a broken massage chair and only tea and water in the room.

Konsensus soal sarapan
4.3/5A Japanese breakfast of more than ten local dishes — repeatedly praised in 2026 ('marvellous', and one guest went back for three bowls of rice)
Book the stargazing walk (¥1,200 per person, leaving about 19:30–20:00 after dinner) or the private premium tour (¥11,000 for two), but expect weather cancellations — many 2026 guests got rain. The large baths swap between men and women in the evening, so arrive early to try both. The Hirugami morning market and a FamilyMart are a short walk away, but the path to the market is a steep hill.
Catatan soal makan malam
4.3/5Seasonal kaiseki in private rooms or the sukiya-style Shikitei dining room: the standard menu includes Shinshū salmon sashimi, grilled yamame trout, Iida carp simmered in sweet soy and local pork shabu-shabu; the Murasawa-beef course adds beef tataki, nigiri and a grilled steak, and there's a lighter 'small kaiseki'. 2026 guests praised the subtle dashi seasoning, the carp and the generous portions. Critics mentioned cold dishes at 18:30, rice and miso soup arriving just before dessert, and fatty beef too heavy for older guests.
Onsen & relaksasi: kenyataannya
Hirugami's alkaline simple sulphur spring (pH 9.7, 47.4°C at source, clear). The inn says the large baths are 100% spring water with no water added, partly recirculated for heating, and that enough water flows in to replace the bath roughly every 24 hours; the April 2024 blogger noted heating, recirculation and disinfection alongside some overflow.
Two large baths with big kōyamaki tubs swap between men and women in the evening and are open from check-in until 9:30 the next morning. In April 2024 each side also had a small outdoor tub, but 2026 guests report no outdoor bath, and a September 2026 guest said the baths had been renovated. With only 20 rooms, guests often have the bath to themselves. No private bookable baths were found; two rooms have their own onsen bath.

Peringatan & catatan lokal
- 01
Check-in 14:00, check-out 10:00. A breakfast-only plan accepts arrivals up to 23:00.
- 02
The outdoor tubs of the large baths appear to have been removed or closed by 2026 — don't book expecting an open-air bath unless you take one of the two rooms with an onsen bath.
- 03
There's a slope of about 10 metres from the car park to the entrance, steps to the private dining rooms and no wheelchair-accessible room.
- 04
Children are accepted, but an August 2026 family found few baby facilities and a quiet atmosphere better suited to adults.
- 05
Recent evidence comes mainly from booking-site reviews; 2026 guests report an ageing building with uneven upkeep alongside friendly service.
