MICHELIN Key ryokan — what Japanese guests actually say
Twenty ryokan in our directory hold MICHELIN Keys in 2026. The Key tells you a stay is special; Japanese guests' reports tell you the catches — recirculated baths, uneven service, steep stairs and steeper prices.
Diperbarui 7 Okt 2026
The MICHELIN Key is the Michelin Guide's distinction for hotels — the counterpart of its Stars for restaurants, recognising stays it considers exceptional. Keys were first awarded in Japan in July 2024, when 6 hotels and ryokan received three Keys, 17 received two and 85 received one. The list has grown with each selection since: 7, 20 and 101 in the 2025 list, published in October 2025, and 7, 23 and 115 in the 2026 list, published on 18 September 2026.
A Key is a useful signal, but it is a single verdict. It won't tell you which room to book, whether the bath in your room is real onsen, or how the service holds up on an ordinary weeknight — and that is exactly what Japanese guests' reports are good at. Twenty of the ryokan we review hold Keys in 2026: two with three, seven with two and eleven with one. Below, we set each award beside what Japanese stay reports, blogs and booking-site reviews actually say. Everything here is drawn from our full report on each inn.
Gora Kadan — three Keys, every year since 2024
Founded in 1948 in the 1930s summer villa of Imperial Prince Kan'in, Gora Kadan in Hakone has held three Keys in every selection since 2024, one of only seven places in Japan at that level in 2026. Japanese guests rate it 4.41 across 143 reviews on one leading site, with the baths highest at 4.60. They praise staff who anticipate needs before you ask, the free car to Gora Station and nearby museums, and the weakly alkaline spring from the inn's own three sources — at its best in the detached suites and the new Bettei villas, whose open-air baths are source-fed with no added water.
The catches sit in the lower tiers. About a quarter of 32 reviews posted between April and September 2026 scored 3.5 or below, mostly over cleaning lapses and patchy service in the standard and open-air-bath rooms. The shared indoor bath has water added, and one 2025 blogger found their standard room's bath wasn't onsen at all. Opinion on the food split in 2026, the building has many steps, and plans with dinner and breakfast start from about ¥132,000 for two.

Asaba — two Keys in 2024, three since 2025
Founded in 1484 and now run by the tenth generation of the same family, Asaba in Shuzenji was promoted from two Keys to three in the 2025 selection and kept them in 2026. Its centrepiece is Gekkeiden, a working Noh stage across the garden pond, and guests consistently call watching it from their room the most memorable part of the stay. Every room has its own source-fed alkaline bath, and the Izu-focused cooking — matsuba crab, conger-eel black-rice sushi, fried tiger blowfish — draws uniform praise; one booking site shows 4.76 from 53 recent reviews.
Service is the recurring caveat. Detailed reviews describe staff audibly sighing at a request for an extension cord, a previous guest's rubbish left in a room and noise from next door at night, and three recent guests noted that the okami never greeted or saw them off. If the Noh stage is why you're booking, ask for a second-floor room, and know that performances are a ticketed seasonal programme rather than a nightly show.
Zaborin — two Keys, every year since 2024
Zaborin's 15 rooms sit in the forest above Niseko, each with an indoor and an outdoor bath of genuine hot-spring water drawn from about 1,000 metres down and never recirculated. It has held two Keys in every selection, and the local tourism association confirms it is the only Hokkaido stay at that level. Guests describe silky, faintly sulphurous water scented with hinoki, and one family bathed four times in a single night.
On one major Japanese booking site, 21 reviews rate the baths 4.48 out of 5 but service only 3.52: a reception team unfamiliar with its own rooms, long waits at the bar, the wrong dish served twice, and breakfast orders lost between the front desk and the restaurant as recently as 2026. There is no air conditioning, insects can keep you out of the outdoor bath on summer nights, and prices now start around ¥196,000 for two with meals.
Nishimuraya Honkan — two Keys, every year since 2024
Kinosaki's classic splurge averages 91 out of 100 across 30 reviews on one major Japanese travel site, with service and breakfast both at 96. Guests praise warm, well-trained staff, seasonal kaiseki built around matsuba snow crab — as sashimi, steamed and grilled at the table — and the Hirata-kan wing, built in 1960 by the sukiya master Masaya Hirata. It has held two Keys in every selection since 2024.
The catch most foreign visitors won't expect: several accounts say the in-room baths, including the open-air tubs in suites, are filled with heated tap water rather than onsen. The real spring water is in the inn's two large baths and the town's public baths. Rooms score only 82, older rooms can feel cold in winter, and the smell of an in-room crab dinner can linger into the night.
Wasurenosato Gajoen — one Key in 2024, two since 2025
A hamlet of relocated thatched farmhouses beside the Amori River in Kirishima, where chickens roam the grounds and every room has its own rock-carved onsen tub. Listed by Michelin simply as GAJOEN, it rose from one Key to two in the 2025 selection. Japanese guests rate it 4.62 across 34 reviews on one leading site, with service at 4.76, and love the unhurried, 'neither clingy nor distant' hospitality, shochu by the irori after dinner and food from the inn's own farm.
Critics question the value at over ¥100,000 for two: dated rooms, basic amenities, weak Wi-Fi, heavy meat-centred portions and insects in summer. The steep attic stairs and high entrance step in the thatched Type B rooms, and the handrail-free stone baths, are hard on older guests — the flat riverside suites are the safer choice.

Kamenoi Bessou — two Keys, every year since 2024
Begun in 1921 as a villa of Kumahachi Aburaya, the figure behind Beppu's rise as a resort, Kamenoi Bessou has fifteen cottages across a 30,000㎡ forest garden beside Yufuin's Lake Kinrin, plus six Western-style rooms in the main building. It has held two Keys in every selection. Japanese guests rave about the space and 'the air within the grounds'; the cottages have their own baths of continuously flowing simple alkaline water from four sources on the property, and the two large baths swap between men and women at midnight.
Guests are more measured about the food: the Oita wagyu is praised, the rest called competent rather than memorable, and one experienced reviewer suggested booking breakfast only. The quiet, low-key style doesn't always match the famous name for the price, older buildings mean cold corridors and old gas heaters, and the lake outside draws crowds of day-trippers — though only guests pass the thatched gate. The private in-room onsen comes with the cottages, not the main-building rooms.

Kanamean Nishitomiya — one Key in 2024 and 2025, two in 2026
On Tominokōji street in central Kyoto since 1873, Kanamean Nishitomiya is an eight-room sukiya townhouse built around small courtyard gardens, and dinner is the point: its kaiseki has held a Michelin star every year since 2010. Guests are shown the kitchen and the day's ingredients before eating in a private room, choosing classic kaiseki or the contemporary counter course 'Kaname', with a cellar of about 1,000 wines; one repeat guest strongly recommends taking both meals on a first stay. It held one Key in 2024 and 2025 and rose to two in the 2026 selection.
Japanese reviews are few — a handful of blogs and individual reviews rather than hundreds of scores. Every room has a hinoki bath, but it isn't onsen, and the tubs are filled in advance so hot that a September 2026 guest couldn't get in; ask staff to cool yours. Ground-floor rooms have the gardens but hear footsteps from upstairs, upstairs rooms are reached by stairs only, and two meals cost about ¥71,500–99,000 per person plus a 10% service charge.

Onyado Chikurintei — two Keys since 2025
Chikurintei's 11 rooms sit inside Mifuneyama Rakuen, a garden laid out in 1845 beneath the cliffs of Mount Mifune in Takeo Onsen, and every one has a private open-air bath — four open straight onto the garden by their own path. The Emperor and Empress stayed in its Shūhō suite in 1992. Not listed in 2024, it received two Keys in 2025 and kept them in 2026. Japanese guests rate it 4.78 across 31 reviews on one leading site, with food at 4.97: in-room kaiseki with Saga beef fillet and clay-pot Koshihikari rice, served on antique Imari and Arita porcelain.
The alkaline spring emerges at only about 35–36°C, so it is heated rather than free-flowing — one 2025 guest was disappointed to find it recirculated — and some rooms' separate indoor baths use heated groundwater. Older rooms such as Yamazakura have dated washrooms and cold corridors, summer brings insects and overgrown paths, children under junior-high age aren't accepted, and stays for two start at about ¥115,000 with two meals.

FUFU Kawaguchiko — two Keys in 2026
FUFU Kawaguchiko's 32 suites, from 59㎡ to 135㎡, sit on a steep slope above Lake Kawaguchi, and every one faces Mt Fuji, with its own open-air bath lined with Fuji lava and a fireplace. It holds two Keys in the 2026 Japan list. Japanese guests rate it 4.54 across 85 reviews on one leading site, with rooms at 4.68, and 4.95 across 110 on another. They love the rooms, the bath with Fuji in front of it, kaiseki cooked over firewood and lava stone at Yamanoha, where every seat faces the mountain, the natto gratin at breakfast and the free minibar.
The view isn't equal: in some rooms Fuji is half-hidden by other buildings or the bath faces neighbouring wings, and the inn doesn't price by view, so ask when booking. The inn doesn't say whether its baths are free-flowing; guests describe the in-room baths as heated and recirculated. Complaints grew in 2025–2026 — dinners of two and a half to three hours, check-in waits, staff who seemed curt or rushed — there is no in-room dining or station shuttle, and stays for two with two meals start around ¥128,700–139,700.

Kaga: Beniya Mukayu and Araya Totoan — one Key each
Beniya Mukayu, at Yamashiro Onsen, has held one Key in every selection since 2024. Every room has a terrace bath of source-fed spring water facing a garden built around a red pine said to be over 300 years old, and Japanese critics call the Kaga kaiseki outstanding. The complaints are about the layout: steps just inside room doors, a walk outside to reach some rooms, a very narrow lift, fixed bamboo blinds that block the garden view from the bath, and an open dining room where you can hear the next table.
Araya Totoan, also one Key since 2024, sits at Yamashiro's original spring and is run by the 18th generation of a family that once kept the key to the local lord's bath and later supported the young Rosanjin. About 100,000 litres a day of free-flowing water fill three baths and 11 of the 17 rooms' own tubs. The catch is value at the top end: in winter crab season some guests paid over ¥200,000 a night for two and were disappointed, and the sukiya-style twins have no in-room onsen.

Kyoto: Hiiragiya and Hoshinoya Kyoto — one Key each
Hiiragiya, receiving guests in central Kyoto since 1818, has held one Key since 2024 and averages 4.91 out of 5 across 40 reviews on Japan's leading luxury booking site, with 4.95 for service. Guests remember dust-free rooms, Kyoto kaiseki and tubs of fragrant koyamaki wood. Know that it is not a hot spring — the tubs hold gentle groundwater — that the old wooden building has thin walls, and that the smallest rooms have no bath or toilet of their own.
Hoshinoya Kyoto, new to the list in 2025, is reached by a 10- to 20-minute boat ride up the Arashiyama gorge, and its rooms have no television by design. It has no onsen and no large shared bath either: rooms have wooden tubs of regular heated water. Meals are booked separately from the room, the path from the dock involves steep stairs with no lift, and a 2023 guest in the top room saw an ingredient they had flagged at check-in appear in the first course.

Kyushu and western Honshu: Bettei Otozure, Ryotei Hanzuiryo, Myoken Ishiharaso and Yufuin Tamanoyu — one Key each
Bettei Otozure at Nagato Yumoto, one Key since 2024, is an adults-only, barefoot, tatami-floored retreat where every room has a free-flowing open-air bath; guests rate it 4.87 across 50 reviews on one leading site and praise the light local kaiseki. The shared large baths are recirculated, so the real onsen is in your room, and the cheapest maisonettes have steep stairs and some noise from neighbours. Ryotei Hanzuiryo in Unzen, also one Key since 2024, offers villas of about 250㎡ with kaiseki served in your own tatami room and a milky, strongly acidic spring — but the hinoki baths in the standard villas are heated tap water, and since ownership changes around 2024 guests report worn fittings and delayed repairs, which the inn has acknowledged.
Two Kyushu inns joined in 2025. Myoken Ishiharaso in Kirishima feeds each bath from its own source on site, with no added water, no reheating and no chlorine; guests rate the baths 4.89. But only 10 of its 18 rooms have onsen in the room, mountain-side rooms face a busy road, the baths are reached by outdoor stairs, and free pickup ended in March 2026. Yufuin Tamanoyu gives each of its sixteen cottages a free-flowing wooden bath and serves a breakfast one blogger called the best in Japan, but dinner divides guests — 'far too meagre' for the price, one 2026 guest wrote — and a notice describes the shared baths as filtered and chlorinated.

Mountains and Izu: Bettei Senjuan, Ochiairo and Tobira Onsen Myojinkan — one Key each
Bettei Senjuan, below Mount Tanigawa in Gunma, has held one Key since 2024: all 18 rooms have an open-air bath fed straight from the inn's own spring, in an award-winning building of clay walls and curved glass. Several 2024–2026 guests found dinner less memorable than before, 2025–2026 reviews report maintenance slips such as dust and broken taps, the building isn't step-free, and prices rose from May 2026 to about ¥117,800 for two with meals. Ochiairo, a heritage-listed Yugashima inn from 1874 with one Key since 2024, includes drinks and has celebrated saunas, but only three of its rooms have baths of 100% spring water — the rest are diluted and reheated — and since September 2025 its cave and river bath has been a mixed bath worn with swimsuits, which splits guests.
Tobira Onsen Myojinkan, in a valley above Matsumoto, is new to the list in 2026. Guests return for a 24-hour standing bath beside the river and service that remembers an allergy from three years earlier; the Nature French dinner is the one thing they argue about, and the 30- to 40-minute shuttle and narrow final road are the main practical complaints.
