A 1950s Yamashiro landmark reborn as a budget all-inclusive: free drinks and oden from check-in, a crab-leg and sweet-shrimp buffet with free-flowing Ishikawa sake, and a kids' paradise — but the building is worn, the baths keep breaking down and the crab is often thin
Yuzankaku is a big Shōwa-era inn in Yamashiro Onsen — the inn itself says the building dates from 1952 — now run by the BBH Hotel Group (Breezbay), which has turned it into an all-inclusive family and group house. A gold phoenix greets you in the lobby, a floodlit waterfall fills the garden window, and from 15:00 to 18:00 beer, sours, highballs, soft drinks, snacks and oden are free; a night bar and liqueur-topped ice cream followed in August 2026. Dinner is a 90-minute buffet in Rokumeitei with all-you-can-eat red snow-crab legs and sweet shrimp on most plans, an Ishikawa sake tasting, and a Nepali-Indian curry corner. Most recent evidence comes from booking-site reviews rather than blogs: Japanese guests rate it 3.8 across 654 reviews on Jalan (dinner and service 4.0, baths and cleanliness 3.5) and 3.75 across 724 on Rakuten Travel (facilities 3.48). A blogger who stayed twice in early 2025 loved the lounge, the lit-up waterfall and the seafood-bowl breakfast. Repeat guests in 2026 call it unbeatable value — free karaoke, table tennis, 4,000 manga, a big kids' room and a summer rooftop pool. The complaints are just as consistent: mouldy, musty corridors, closed toilets, cold rooms in winter, crab legs with little meat (September 2026), a thin buffet, hair-strewn changing rooms, and baths repeatedly out of action — frozen in February 2026, the Greek-temple bath shut until mid-July and the open-air bath until 10 September 2026. Plans with two meals and drinks ran from about ¥8,000 to over ¥30,000 per person in 2026, most often ¥10,000–22,000.
Room Selection Guide
What the guests who stayed here actually recommendRecommended
Genroku-kan sukiya-style rooms (12–12.5 tatami; 'New Genroku' adds an irori hearth)
The older wing's larger sukiya-style rooms sleep two to six; a July 2026 family in a 12-tatami Genroku room gave it full marks. The Genroku 'large room' (22.5 tatami, six to ten people) suits groups. Some rooms are split into two sleeping rooms around a small inner garden — a July 2026 family of five (room type not stated) said the children loved it. The Roten special room (12.5 tatami plus an anteroom) is the only type with its own open-air bath; the inn doesn't say whether it uses spring water.
Aoi-kan 10-tatami Japanese rooms
The standard rooms most reviewers booked: plain Japanese rooms for one to five, close to the kids' room, karaoke and manga corner on the Aoi wing's third floor. Futons are often already laid at check-in, and a couple in August 2026 found their Aoi room 'perfectly clean' despite the dated exterior.
Request To Avoid
Aoi 'economy' 8-tatami rooms and 'room left to us' (omakase) plans
Economy rooms have no bath, so you rely on the shared baths. Smoking rooms exist and omakase plans don't let you choose; a September 2026 family of six found their room smelled of tobacco, and a couple on an omakase plan in May 2026 found mould on the walls and a toilet that clogged. A smoker in August 2026 noted stairs on the way to the annex, a step inside the room and a dark toilet — hard for anyone unsteady on their feet.

Dining Deep Dive
Breakfast Consensus
3.6/5A Japanese-Western buffet of about 30 dishes in Rokumeitei, 7:00–9:00 (last entry 8:30), with build-your-own seafood bowls during fairs — a blogger in January 2025 loved the salmon-roe bowl, but an August 2026 family found breakfast a letdown after dinner
Arrive at 15:00 for happy hour (free beer, sours, highballs, soft drinks, snacks and oden until 18:00), then come back for the night bar and 'finishing ice cream' from 21:00 to 23:00. Book the free station shuttle by phone at least an hour ahead — it runs every 30 minutes from 14:00 to 18:00 only when reserved. In summer, the rooftop pool opens to that day's guests from 13:00.
Dinner Insights
3.6/5A 90-minute buffet with drinks in Rokumeitei: red snow-crab legs and sweet shrimp all you can eat on most plans, plus sashimi, sushi, eel, steak, hotpots, noodles and a Nepali-Indian curry corner cooked by Nepali staff, with beer, highballs, wine and a tasting of Ishikawa sake. Whole snow crab and live abalone cost extra. Fans in 2026 praised quick refilling, the eel and the sake; critics said the crab legs were thin, bland or fishy (August and September 2026), the steak and sushi rice cut corners (May 2026), dishes were fewer than in past years (November 2025) and there was little for children.
Onsen & Wellness Realities
Yamashiro Onsen water, listed on the official site as a simple spring (hypotonic, weakly alkaline). Jalan lists it as heated and recirculated with filtration — not free-flowing.
Three shared baths that swap between men and women: the Kenroku large bath with a semi-open-air tub and the only cold plunge; the marble 'Greek temple' bath; and the Ochiba-no-yu open-air bath on the Aoi wing's fourth floor, set against the hillside. There is also a sauna (90°C, about six people). Times are split by gender (the open-air bath, for example, is for men only in the morning), which several guests found awkward. No private (kashikiri) baths. Reviewers in 2026 found the Greek bath too hot for children, the open-air bath far from the others with insects and spiders, and some showers running cold; the open-air bath was closed for broken piping until 10 September 2026.
The official site says guests with tattoos are refused in the large baths in principle, unless the tattoo is fully hidden by a single 8 × 10 cm cover sticker that you bring yourself.
Local Warnings & Nuances
- 01
Check-in 15:00 (last 18:00), check-out 10:00. The front desk closes from 23:00 to 7:00 except for emergencies. Payment is by cash or card only — no e-money or QR payments.
- 02
Bath outages are frequent: baths froze in February 2026, the Greek-temple bath was closed until 15 July 2026 and the open-air bath until 10 September 2026. The whole building loses power on 14 October 2026 from 10:00 to 14:00. Ask which baths are open when you book.
- 03
The building dates from 1952 and shows it: 2025–2026 reviewers mention musty corridors, mould, closed toilets, draughts and weak heating in winter, and broken fittings, even as others found their rooms clean.
- 04
This is a big, lively house (about 120 rooms and banquet halls of up to 180 tatami) aimed at families, groups and drinkers — not a quiet ryokan. Many staff are from overseas, and reviewers consistently praise their friendliness.
- 05
Children are well catered for (kids' room, free karaoke, table tennis, manga, summer rooftop pool), but children aged 7 or over, or taller than 120 cm, must use the bath for their own gender, and children still in nappies must use a baby bath.
