Yamashiro Onsen Rurikoh

Yamashiro's big 116-room inn with a nightly taiko show, free round-the-clock lobby drinks, vast 24-hour baths and winter crab kaiseki — but the shared water is recirculated, the baths sit down a long flight of stairs, and the ageing building draws dust and upkeep complaints
Rurikoh is the larger of Yorozuya Kankō's two inns in Yamashiro Onsen, five minutes' walk from its sister Hatori and about ten from the Sōyu and Kosōyu public baths. It marked its 35th anniversary in 2026 and is a 116-room house: about 100 tatami or tatami-and-bed rooms in the Hoshi, Kaze and Tsuki wings plus 14 Western twins and singles, with a theatre club, karaoke, a summer pool and a free Kaga ikkō-ikki taiko show at 21:00 every night. Japanese guests rate it 4.3 across 1,960 reviews on one major site, with dinner and baths at 4.5, and 4.23 across 1,501 on another. Bloggers who stayed between 2022 and 2025 enjoyed the open-air-bath suites, a crab-heavy kaiseki in the semi-private Nisaburō dining room and a breakfast buffet of about 70 dishes where you build your own seafood bowl; 2026 reviewers add free 24-hour lobby drinks, huge high-ceilinged baths open around the clock and frequent room upgrades. Know before you book: a booking site lists the shared baths as water-added, heated and recirculated; only the Hoshi wing's Type A suites have onsen in their outdoor tubs, while the Type B suites' tubs are filled from the tap. The baths are reached by a long flight of stairs that several 2026 guests found hard or impossible with older parents. Complaints from late 2025 to October 2026 also cite dust, a changing-room floor patched with tape, air conditioning that can't be adjusted, thin walls in the singles, a frog in a private bath, a queue at 15:00 check-in and food some found merely average. Standard rooms with two meals cost about ¥19,800–26,000 per person; Hoshi suites run above ¥30,000, and winter crab adds ¥4,400–33,000.
Room Selection Guide
What the guests who stayed here actually recommendRecommended
Hoshi (星の棟) wing Type A suites, with an onsen open-air bath
Ten tatami plus a twin-bed corner, a living area and a wooden deck with an outdoor tub of spring water and its own washing area. Hoshi guests also get the Club Lounge (7:00–22:00, sparkling wine and beer 15:00–19:00) — though some plans exclude it, and children of primary-school age or younger can't use it. A blogger in room 405 in November 2024 had a hanging chair on the deck, a view toward Mount Hakusan and silky water, though staff had to turn the tub temperature up; a 2022 blogger on the fifth floor liked the separate bed area. In July 2026 a metal toilet-paper holder fell off the wall in one of these suites.
Tsuki (月の棟) Type A standard rooms, renovated in January 2022
10–12.5 tatami with two semi-double beds; the 'next-room' version adds a 6-tatami second room and the large version runs to 15 plus 8 tatami. A January 2026 guest praised the new bathroom and a TV in each room for a three-generation stay, and an April 2026 family of eight found the large room clean and spacious. Many 2026 reviewers booked into standard Tsuki rooms were upgraded on arrival. An August 2026 guest noted the renovated room still had an old toilet.
Request To Avoid
Hoshi Type B suites (outdoor tub not onsen) and the Single A rooms
The official room page says the Type B suites' outdoor tubs are not spring water — you fill them yourself — and in November 2025 a guest who asked was told staff weren't sure; that guest also found a torn curtain, then dust in the replacement room, and a December 2025 repeat guest in a Type B suite felt quality was slipping. The 14㎡ singles have no bath and no view, and in February 2026 a solo guest could hear a neighbour's snoring and toilet. In some rooms the air conditioning can't be fine-tuned (July and October 2026).

Dining Deep Dive
Breakfast Consensus
4.1/5A buffet of about 70 Japanese and Western dishes in the Tenpyō dining room (7:00–9:00, closing 9:30) — a build-your-own seafood 'asa-don', Kaga home-style dishes and tempura fried to order; Nisaburō plans get a set breakfast with kamado-cooked Koshihikari rice. Most guests liked it, though a few found the buffet line cramped or the set breakfast small, and a set meal sometimes replaces the buffet
The free shuttle from Kaga Onsen Station runs on the hour from 14:00 to 18:00 (since 1 October 2026, no booking needed); the return runs at 8:30, 9:30 and 10:15 and must be booked by 21:00 the night before. Don't miss the taiko at 21:00. The Saikawa lobby lounge has free drinks 24 hours and snacks 13:00–18:00 — there are no tea sweets in the rooms. Hatori's baths are free, five minutes' walk away. Parking is free (200 spaces).
Dinner Insights
4.3/5Creative kaiseki at 18:00 or 19:00 (closing 21:00), served either in Tenpyō, a lattice-screened dining room with partitioned seating, or at Nisaburō, the open-kitchen main dining room where you pick a main course from five or six on the day (children only from upper primary school); some plans use a large banquet hall. In November 2024 a blogger loved a crab-heavy Nisaburō dinner of snow crab, crab hot pot and crab rice; 2026 reviewers praise the kamado-cooked rice, Ise-ebi, sashimi and generous portions, and an October 2026 guest couldn't finish the sushi. Critics found it average for the price (September 2026), rushed (May 2026), mostly cold on a full Obon night (August 2026) and the nodoguro supplement underwhelming (March 2026). Crab plans add ¥4,400–33,000 per person.
Onsen & Wellness Realities
Yamashiro Onsen's colourless alkaline simple spring. A major booking site lists the shared baths as water-added, heated and recirculated/filtered — not free-flowing. The Hoshi wing's Type A suites have onsen in their outdoor tubs; the Type B suites' tubs are filled with ordinary hot water, according to the official room page.
Two large granite indoor baths with jacuzzis and garden views, plus a rock outdoor bath (Nikkō) and a hinoki one (Gekkō), all open 24 hours and roofed — handy in rain or snow — with a sauna from 15:00 to 22:00; the men's and women's sides swap between morning and evening. Five reservable private outdoor baths named after the five colours of Kutani ware cost ¥3,300 for 50 minutes (7:00–22:00), but in July 2026 the official site listed three of them as closed for maintenance, and in October 2026 a guest found a dead frog in one. There's also a courtyard foot bath, and free entry to sister inn Hatori's baths. Guests love the scale, but warn of a long flight of steps between the changing room and the baths, slightly hot water, and a changing-room floor patched with tape (January and August 2026).
No policy found on the official site or Japanese booking sites — contact the inn. The Hoshi Type A suites have their own onsen bath.
Local Warnings & Nuances
- 01
Check-in 15:00 (last check-in 19:00; room-only plans until 22:00), check-out 10:00, with a queue at the desk around 15:00. Cancellation: 30% from 3 days before, 50% the day before, 100% on the day.
- 02
The large baths are reached by a long flight of stairs, and some corridors have steep slopes — several 2026 guests with older parents found them hard or impossible. Wheelchairs can be borrowed, but ask about routes, or book a suite with its own bath.
- 03
It's a big resort-style house that takes groups, with banquet halls, a theatre club and karaoke; holiday shows and children's events run at busy times, and the summer pool opened from 18 July to 31 August in 2026 (free for guests). Some 2026 guests found it quiet; Obon and holidays are busy.
- 04
Children are welcome — the half-price children's meals are a kids' plate at dinner and breakfast, babies under one stay free and the baths have baby beds — but Nisaburō takes children only from upper primary school, and the Club Lounge excludes primary-school age and younger.
- 05
In late October 2026 the official website was offline for maintenance; the inn says it is operating normally and takes phone enquiries (9:30–18:30).
